MELBOURNE – Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina beat Victoria Azarenka in straight units to reach the Australian Open final on Thursday and finish the Belarusian’s dream of a 3rd Melbourne title.

Rybakina gained their semifinal 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 at a blustery Rod Laver Arena and can meet Aryna Sabalenka or Magda Linette in Saturday’s final.

The Moscow-born Kazakh prevailed in 1hr 41min in opposition to the 2012 and 2013 champion to account for a 3rd main winner in as many matches.

The twenty second seed had already defeated reigning French and US Open champion Iga Swiatek within the fourth spherical and 2017 Roland Garros winner Jelena Ostapenko within the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park.

“I’m super happy to be in the final. Today it was a bit tougher for me because it was different conditions,” mentioned the 23-year-old Rybakina.

“I couldn’t play really aggressive tennis. The ball was not going so much, but I’m happy that in the end I managed to win.

“I’ll strive my finest within the final after all.”

Big-serving Rybakina won in straight sets when the pair played at Indian Wells last year, their only previous meeting.

Azarenka, 33, was largely on the back foot again against the grace and power of Rybakina, who was in her first Melbourne Park semifinal.

Rybakina reached the last four largely on the back of her powerful serving, having sent down 35 aces in her five matches, more than any other player.

She started with a nervy double fault but soon was back in the groove, launching three booming aces in a row to secure the opening game.

Azarenka withstood an early assault from Rybakina’s heavy, deep groundstrokes to force the first break point, which she converted with a high volley, only for her opponent to strike straight back.

Now powering winners off both wings and utilising her wide reach, Rybakina broke a second time for 5-3.

Trying to close out, the Kazakh’s first serve deserted her. Azarenka saved a set point and then created two break points of her own, converting the second.

At 5-5 Rybakina’s second double fault gave 24th seed Azarenka three break points.

But Rybakina showed why she is already a Grand Slam champion by averting the crisis and sealing the game with her sixth ace.

In a tight tiebreak Azarenka went long at 4-5 to give Rybakina two set points. She needed only one to go ahead after exactly an hour of play.

‘HARD TO DIGEST’

The aces and winners kept coming at the start of the second set, Azarenka getting more frustrated as she was broken to love to go 2-1 down.

Two double faults from Azarenka then gave Rybakina another opportunity, which she took for 5-2 and a chance to serve for a place in the final.

Nerves crept in on Rybakina’s normally reliable serve and a double fault gifted Azarenka a chance to extend the contest, which she took with a backhand return winner.

Rybakina was not to be denied though and broke again to reach her first Australian Open final.

Azarenka will return to the top 20 in the world but felt she did not do herself justice on the night.

“Right now particularly it is type of exhausting to digest,” said the Belarusian, who was contesting her first Australian Open semifinal since her last triumph a decade ago.

“I’m happy with myself how I fought and I attempted.

“But… tennis-wise I felt like I just wasn’t there, especially in the important moments when I kept creating those opportunities for me. Just couldn’t convert them.”

The 24-year-old Tsitsipas is the very best remaining seed left at three and with Melbourne’s massive Greek neighborhood roaring him on, his title cost is gathering tempo.

But he did lose his cool at one level in the third set, smacking the ball into the wall after shedding a degree as a ball boy went to gather it close by.

“What I did, definitely I’m not happy about that. I shouldn’t have done it,” Tsitsipas stated concerning the incident.

“Well, it hurts to beat her because I always want her to do well,” the twenty fourth seed stated of Pegula, a detailed good friend and follow associate.

Asked how her younger son Leo would obtain his mum’s newest achievement, Azarenka stated: “He’s more worried about his football and when we’re going to play again.

“He positively desires his mum to be dwelling.”

Leo will have to wait at least a few more days because Azarenka faces Moscow-born Kazakh Rybakina on Thursday for a place in the final.

The 22nd seed has blasted 35 aces so far, more than any other woman at the tournament.

Ominously, she said her serve is better now than when she won Wimbledon last year.

“I gained much more energy. It’s my weapon on the court docket and naturally we are attempting to work on it,” she stated.
