Hundreds of businesses across Minnesota closed their doors on Friday as thousands of people poured into the streets, braving bitter cold temperatures to protest ongoing immigration enforcement operations in the state.

The action was part of a coordinated economic protest, with organisers urging residents to skip work and school and avoid shopping for the day. The goal was to send a clear message of opposition to the continued presence of immigration officers and the impact their operations are having on local communities.

Immigration raids in Minnesota have been underway for more than six weeks. While federal authorities describe the operation as a public safety effort focused on removing criminals, critics say many of those affected have no criminal records, and some US citizens have also been caught up in the sweeps.

Tensions escalated further on Friday when around 100 faith leaders were arrested at Minneapolis–St Paul International Airport during a demonstration urging airlines not to transport immigration detainees. Officials said the arrests occurred after the protest went beyond agreed limits and disrupted airport access.

Thousands of federal officers have been deployed across the state as part of a major enforcement surge, adding to fears and uncertainty in immigrant communities. Anger has also been fueled by the recent killing of 37-year-old Minneapolis resident Renee Good, an incident that has drawn widespread condemnation and intensified calls for accountability.

Community leaders say the protests are about more than immigration policy. “We want ICE out of Minnesota and out of every state,” said one faith leader involved in the demonstrations, calling on lawmakers to step in and increase oversight.

Friday’s marches were among the largest yet, with crowds filling downtown Minneapolis despite temperatures dropping to minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Protesters chanted, played music, and eventually gathered near the city’s NBA arena for a large rally.

Many business owners chose to close in solidarity. Corey Lamb, who owns a small botanical shop in Minneapolis, said fear caused by the raids has disrupted both daily life and local commerce. He explained that when workers and customers are afraid to leave their homes, the effects ripple through the entire economy.

Restaurants, cafés, tattoo studios, and retail stores joined the shutdown. For some owners, the decision was painful. One restaurateur who closed several locations said revenues have already fallen sharply in recent weeks, but staying open risked public backlash and employee concerns.

School districts have also been affected. Officials in one suburb reported that several students, some as young as five, were detained in recent days. In another case, a toddler was reportedly detained alongside her undocumented father during a routine trip home.

The protests come amid growing political pressure, with federal leaders calling on local law enforcement to cooperate more closely with immigration authorities. Minnesota’s sanctuary-style policies, which limit such cooperation, have drawn sharp criticism from the federal government.

Meanwhile, internal dissent has surfaced within federal agencies. A senior investigator recently resigned over concerns related to the handling of the Renee Good case, and multiple prosecutors have also stepped down in recent weeks.

For many Minnesotans, Friday’s shutdown and protests were a way to show solidarity, express outrage, and demand change — even as the economic and emotional costs continue to mount.

The US government is considering whether to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali nationals, a decision that could affect members of one of America’s most established African communities.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on Sunday that the federal government plans to reassess TPS for Somalia, describing the programme as a temporary measure that has been in place for more than 30 years. According to her, TPS was designed to respond to major crises for a limited period, not to function as a long-term asylum pathway.

Her comments come just days after President Donald Trump declared that he would “immediately” revoke TPS protections for Somalis living in Minnesota. His announcement ignited widespread fear within Minnesota’s Somali community — the largest in the United States — and raised legal questions about whether the White House has the authority to implement such a targeted directive.

Advocates and immigration experts swiftly pushed back, saying the president cannot single out one group or one state for punitive action. They argued that the move was driven more by political rhetoric than policy, warning that it could fuel hostility toward Somali and Muslim residents at a time when Islamophobia is rising.

Although the rhetoric has created panic, the number of Somalis currently covered by TPS is very small — just over 700 nationwide. Most Somali Americans are either naturalized citizens or hold other forms of legal status. Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar emphasized this point, noting that the majority of Somali residents in the US would not be affected.

Still, community leaders say the danger lies beyond legal paperwork. They worry the announcement could embolden discrimination, especially after Trump claimed — without evidence — that Somali gangs were targeting Minnesota residents. Minnesota’s governor dismissed the allegations and pointed out that the state consistently ranks among the safest in the country.

The debate over Somalia’s TPS designation is part of a wider shift toward tougher immigration policies. The administration has already moved to roll back protections for Venezuelans, Haitians, Cubans, Syrians, and other groups previously allowed to live and work legally in the US.

Somalia’s TPS status remains valid until March 2026, meaning any decision to revoke it must be announced at least 60 days in advance. That gives the administration until mid-January to determine whether the designation will continue nationwide.

For now, Somali families in Minnesota and beyond are left waiting — and hoping — as political tensions rise around their future in the country many now call home.

Speaking at an event in New York, the rap star said she believes Christians in Nigeria are being singled out. “Churches have been burned, families torn apart… simply because of how they pray,” she said, emphasizing that her stance is about “standing up in the face of injustice.”

Her comments come at a time when Nigeria is grappling with widespread insecurity. Armed groups and jihadist factions have carried out violent attacks across various parts of the country, affecting both Muslims and Christians. Analysts continue to stress that the violence targets people of all backgrounds — and isn’t limited to any single religious group.

In recent days, a church attack in Kwara State left two people dead and several others kidnapped. Videos believed to be from the church’s CCTV system show worshippers scrambling for safety as gunmen stormed the building. On the same day, authorities confirmed that a senior Nigerian army officer was killed by jihadist fighters after being ambushed in Borno State.

Earlier this month, Trump said he would send troops into Nigeria “guns a-blazing” if the government failed to stop attacks on Christians. Minaj thanked him for “prioritising this issue,” saying her message was about unity and protecting vulnerable communities.

Nigeria’s government, however, strongly disagrees with these claims. Officials insist the violence affects everyone—Muslims, Christians, and people of no faith—depending on where attacks occur. Independent monitors also say that many victims of jihadist groups in the country are Muslims living in regions where insurgents are most active.

Despite the political tension surrounding the issue, Minaj praised Nigeria as a “beautiful nation with deep faith traditions,” even giving a shout-out to her Nigerian fan base. Her remarks mark one of her most high-profile political interventions to date.

The debate comes against the backdrop of Nigeria’s long-running struggle with insecurity, including kidnappings, banditry, and resource conflicts. Many Nigerians continue to express frustration over what they see as a relentless cycle of violence affecting rural communities, schools, churches, and major travel routes.

Minaj, known for speaking openly on social and political topics, has previously shared her Christian background. In recent years, she has also drawn attention for various public controversies and long-running feuds within the music industry.

After 43 days, the United States government has officially reopened. President Donald Trump signed a bill on Wednesday to end the country’s longest government shutdown, calling it “a great day” for America.

The shutdown, which began on October 1, left hundreds of thousands of federal workers without pay and disrupted vital public services, including food aid, airport operations, and national parks.

The House of Representatives approved the bill in a narrow 222–209 vote, with six Democrats joining Republicans in support. It followed the Senate’s passage of the same bill earlier in the week.

The new funding measure restores operations across all federal agencies, ensures back pay for affected employees, and funds key programs such as the Department of Agriculture, veterans affairs, and SNAP food aid. It also includes new legal provisions protecting senators’ phone records and rolling back the legalization of hemp-derived THC products.

While the deal provides much-needed relief to millions, it fell short of Democratic goals to extend health insurance subsidies for low-income Americans. Lawmakers plan to revisit that issue in December.

Speaking from the Oval Office, President Trump declared, “The country has never been in better shape,” and urged Americans not to forget the shutdown when voting in the 2026 midterm elections. He accused Democrats of “political extortion” for triggering the shutdown over healthcare subsidies.

Republicans hailed the vote as a victory, while Democrats expressed disappointment, calling the compromise “a surrender.” Speaker of the House Mike Johnson described the shutdown as “utterly pointless,” saying, “Millions of families went without food on their tables—it was a game played with real people’s lives.”

As the government reopens, federal workers are returning to their posts, and agencies are resuming services. National parks, airports, and public programs are expected to normalize over the coming days, though some assistance programs like heating aid and early education services may take weeks to fully recover.

Despite the political drama, many in Washington expressed relief that the standoff had ended. Lawmakers from both parties were seen smiling and shaking hands after the vote, closing a turbulent chapter in American politics.

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Nigeria, threatening possible military intervention over what he called “the killing of Christians by Islamists.”

In a fiery post on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed he had directed the Pentagon to prepare a plan of attack if the Nigerian government failed to act swiftly. He accused Nigerian authorities of allowing violence against Christians to continue unchecked, calling it an “existential threat” to the faith.

“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and may go in ‘guns-a-blazing’ to wipe out the Islamic terrorists behind these atrocities,” Trump wrote. “If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet — just like the terrorists attack our cherished Christians.”

He ended his message with a warning to Nigeria’s leadership: “The Nigerian government better move fast!”

Nigeria has long struggled with deadly conflicts involving ethnic, regional, and religious groups. Experts say the violence has claimed the lives of both Christians and Muslims across the country.

Trump’s comments follow repeated claims — many without clear evidence — that Christians are being specifically targeted in large numbers by radical groups. Such statements have reignited debates about Nigeria’s religious and political divisions, as the country remains nearly evenly split between a Muslim-majority north and a Christian-majority south.

The U.S. government has announced a new refugee policy that drastically limits the number of people allowed to resettle in the country over the next year. President Donald Trump’s administration has capped refugee admissions at 7,500 — the lowest in U.S. history — and stated that priority will be given to white South Africans.

This sharp reduction follows the previous cap of 125,000 set under former President Joe Biden. The official notice said the decision was made in the “national interest,” though it did not provide detailed justification.

In January, President Trump suspended the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, claiming the move was necessary to safeguard national security and public safety. The policy shift has been widely viewed as part of a broader effort to reshape U.S. immigration and refugee strategy.

According to the announcement, the majority of available refugee slots will go to Afrikaner South Africans and others facing what the administration described as “illegal or unjust discrimination” in their home countries. Earlier this year, Trump offered to grant refuge to members of the Afrikaner community, sparking strong criticism from the South African government.

Tensions between Washington and Pretoria escalated further after President Trump accused South African President Cyril Ramaphosa of allowing white farmers to be “killed and persecuted.” The White House even showed misleading footage during a meeting with Ramaphosa, which was later revealed to depict a protest, not actual farm murders.

Refugee advocates have condemned the new U.S. policy, warning that it excludes other vulnerable populations, including those displaced by war and persecution in Afghanistan, Sudan, and Venezuela. Krish O’Mara Vignarajah, head of Global Refuge, said the move “lowers America’s moral standing” and undermines the country’s long-standing humanitarian values.

The South African government has denied claims of widespread persecution of white farmers, insisting that the situation is being distorted for political reasons.

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed uncertainty about his chances of entering heaven, saying he’s not confident about his eternal fate.

Speaking aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump openly admitted, “I’m not sure I’m going to make heaven, but I’ve made life a lot better for a lot of people.” He added that despite his accomplishments, he doesn’t believe he’s “heaven-bound.”

Trump also claimed that the war between Russia and Ukraine could have been avoided if the 2020 U.S. election had not been, in his words, “rigged.” He blamed what he called a “crooked election” for the global instability that followed, accusing the current administration of incompetence.

According to Trump, the ongoing tensions in the Israel-Gaza region have also been made worse under Democratic leadership. He lamented that the situation “was much harder to get settled” because of what he described as weak governance.

In an earlier interview, Trump had said one of his goals for a second term was to broker peace across the world, believing such efforts might earn him a place in heaven. Reflecting on the deaths caused by international conflicts, he said, “I want to try to get to heaven if possible… I’m hearing that I’m not doing well.”

U.S. President Donald Trump has approved the deployment of 300 National Guard troops to Chicago, claiming the move is necessary to combat what he described as “out-of-control crime” in the city.

The decision follows a confrontation between immigration officers and protesters, during which officials said an armed woman was shot after allegedly ramming vehicles into law enforcement cars. She later drove herself to a hospital, and her condition remains unknown.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and other state leaders condemned the deployment, calling it an abuse of presidential power. They argued that the move exaggerates the situation in Chicago and undermines state authority.

A federal judge in Oregon recently blocked a similar deployment to Portland, ruling that using military force in U.S. cities without state consent violates constitutional boundaries and fuels unrest.

Despite Trump’s claims that violent crime in Chicago is spiraling, recent data from the Council on Criminal Justice shows homicides have decreased by about one-third compared to the previous year. Still, the city’s crime rate remains higher than the national average, with dozens of shootings reported during recent holiday weekends.

The White House defended the president’s decision, saying the deployment aims to protect federal officers and property. Trump, who has long criticized Democratic-led cities, said he plans to “straighten them out one by one” and suggested such deployments could serve as “training grounds” for U.S. troops to tackle domestic unrest.

Legal experts say the move is likely to face court challenges, as the use of National Guard forces for civilian law enforcement has strict legal limitations.

Fresh documents linked to Jeffrey Epstein have surfaced, revealing the names of several high-profile figures, including billionaire Elon Musk and Prince Andrew.

The records, handed over by the Epstein estate, include flight manifests, phone logs, financial ledgers, and parts of Epstein’s daily schedule. Among the entries, one note from December 2014 referenced Musk with a reminder about a possible visit to Epstein’s island. Musk has previously said he declined such invitations.

Another document showed Prince Andrew listed on a May 2000 flight from New Jersey to Florida with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. The prince has consistently denied wrongdoing.

The files also mention other notable names, such as tech entrepreneur Peter Thiel and political strategist Steve Bannon, with references to scheduled meetings in 2017 and 2019. There is no suggestion that those named were involved in Epstein’s crimes.

Epstein, a convicted sex offender, died in 2019 while awaiting trial on trafficking charges. His long history of connections to wealthy and powerful figures continues to fuel demands for greater transparency, with calls for more records to be released in the pursuit of justice for survivors.
