Two Kenyan activists who vanished in Uganda five weeks ago have finally been found safe, bringing relief to their families and human rights groups who had been searching for answers.

Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo were last seen being bundled into a car by masked men shortly after attending a political event in support of Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine. Their sudden disappearance sparked concern across East Africa, with many fearing the worst.

This weekend, the organisation Vocal Africa confirmed that the two men were alive and being transported from the Ugandan border town of Busia back to Nairobi. In their message announcing the news, the group called the moment a significant step toward protecting the rights of East Africans across the region.

Ugandan authorities had consistently denied holding the activists, even as Kenyan groups pushed for their release. After widespread pressure, the activists’ safe return has been hailed as a victory for cross-border solidarity. Several human rights organisations jointly expressed gratitude to everyone—from governments to journalists and everyday citizens—who kept demanding answers.

Bobi Wine, who is challenging President Yoweri Museveni in next year’s election, accused Ugandan authorities of targeting Njagi and Oyoo because of their association with him. Uganda’s security agencies have long faced criticism for arresting opposition supporters using unmarked vehicles and plain-clothed officers. Many who disappear later reappear in court, facing criminal charges.

This incident is just one of many troubling cases across East Africa. Last year, Njagi himself was abducted in Kenya and went missing for a month before a court ordered authorities to produce him. He later shared disturbing details about being kept in isolation and denied basic necessities.

Earlier this year, another pair of well-known activists—one Kenyan and one Ugandan—were detained in Tanzania, held without communication, and later dumped at their respective borders. They later revealed they had suffered severe mistreatment, accusations that were quickly dismissed by the authorities.

There have been several similar disappearances involving opposition figures, including a prominent Ugandan politician who vanished in Nairobi and resurfaced days later in a Ugandan military court facing treason charges.

These cases have renewed fears that governments in the region may be working together to silence critics, raising serious concerns about safety, political freedom, and human rights in East Africa.

Zohran Kwame Mamdani, 34, has made history as the first Muslim and first South Asian mayor of New York City. His story resonates globally and holds special significance for South Africans, reflecting a journey of migration, identity, and purpose.

Born in Kampala Uganda, and spending part of his early childhood in South Africa ,Mamdani brings a unique perspective shaped by diverse communities. Before entering politics, he worked as a housing counselor and community organizer, advocating for affordable housing, better public services, and opportunities for marginalized youth.

Mamdani’s platform focused on affordable transport, rent stabilization, city-owned grocery stores, and youth programs. His election underscores the power of young leadership and shows that age is no barrier to influencing large, complex cities.

For South African audiences, his journey is a reflection on the value of nurturing young leaders and investing in community-driven solutions. Mamdani’s rise is a reminder that leadership is defined by service, vision, and tangible action, and that youth can shape the future both locally and globally.

The United States has struck new agreements with Honduras and Uganda to take in migrants as part of its ongoing efforts to tighten immigration controls.

Under the deal, Uganda will accept a number of African and Asian migrants who previously sought asylum at the US-Mexico border, provided they have no criminal records. The exact number Uganda will take remains uncertain.

Honduras has agreed to receive several hundred deported people from Spanish-speaking countries over the next two years, including families with children. Officials also indicated that the country may consider taking in more beyond that timeframe.

These arrangements are part of a broader push by the Trump administration to secure deportation agreements with multiple nations, even those with troubling human rights records. More than a dozen countries across different regions have already signed similar deals.

Critics, including human rights groups and UN experts, warn that such policies put migrants at risk of being sent to places where they could face danger or further displacement. They argue the agreements may also violate international law since people are being removed to countries that are not their own.

Earlier this year, Rwanda agreed to take in up to 250 migrants from the US, though it insisted on reviewing each individual case. Panama and Costa Rica have also agreed to accept several hundred African and Asian migrants. Meanwhile, Washington has approached other nations, including Ecuador and Spain, about taking part in the program.

The push follows a Supreme Court ruling in June that cleared the way for the administration to resume deportations to third countries without requiring hearings on potential risks. The decision drew sharp dissent from three justices, who called it an abuse of judicial power.

Deportation has been a centerpiece of President Trump’s second-term agenda, fulfilling one of his key campaign promises. Supporters say it strengthens border control, while opponents argue it strips vulnerable people of protection and safety.

Uganda has officially declared the end of its latest Ebola outbreak, three months after the virus was confirmed in the capital, Kampala.

The outbreak was first reported on January 30 following the death of a male nurse who tested positive for the virus. On Saturday, the health ministry announced the outbreak was over, noting that no new cases had been recorded for 42 consecutive days since the last patient was discharged.

The ministry did not update the final number of cases, but earlier reports in March indicated at least ten infections and two deaths.

Ebola outbreaks are not uncommon in Uganda, a country with extensive tropical forests that provide a natural habitat for the virus. This latest incident, caused by the Sudan strain of Ebola—which currently has no approved vaccine—marks Uganda’s ninth recorded outbreak since 2000.

The virus spread initially in Kampala, a densely populated city of around four million people that serves as a major transport hub connecting Uganda to neighboring countries including Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, and South Sudan.

Despite frequent outbreaks, Uganda has built significant expertise in managing Ebola, allowing health authorities to respond quickly and effectively.
