South African singer Tyla has strengthened her global reputation by winning the Best Afrobeats Award at the MTV Video Music Awards for her hit single Push 2 Start. This is her second consecutive VMA, confirming her status as one of the most exciting young artists in the world.

Born and raised in Edenvale, Johannesburg, Tyla has built an international career while staying true to her African roots. Her fresh sound, bold style, and confident stage presence have made her a standout voice in global pop.

Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Peace Mabe congratulated Tyla, calling her a symbol of “resilience, creativity, and pride.”

“From township beginnings to international arenas, Tyla has carried our music and identity to the highest stages,” Mabe said. “She proves that South African artists are not only competitive but capable of setting global trends.”

Mabe linked Tyla’s success to the Department’s efforts to strengthen South Africa’s creative industries through initiatives such as the Mzansi Golden Economy programme, bursaries, artist residencies, and youth incubators. She acknowledged persistent challenges—especially funding and bureaucracy—but reaffirmed government supportTyla’s triumph is not just hers. It belongs to the millions of young South Africans who see in her story a reflection of their own potential. It belongs to every artist who works tirelessly, often without recognition, to carry our culture forward. And it belongs to a country that continues to prove that its creative spirit is indomitable.”

Tyla’s latest recognition signals a continuing shift: South African music, once confined to local charts, is now helping shape the global pop and Afrobeats landscape.
