Bondi Beach, one of Sydney’s most loved public spaces, has been plunged into grief after a deadly shooting that claimed the lives of 15 people attending a Hanukkah celebration.

Police have confirmed the attackers were a father and son, identified by local media as Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son, Naveed. The older man was killed at the scene, while his son remains in critical condition in hospital.

The victims were targeted because they were Jewish, turning a peaceful religious gathering into a scene of terror. Those killed include a 10-year-old girl, a British-born rabbi, a retired police officer, a Holocaust survivor, and community members who had gathered with their families to celebrate the festival of light.

Witnesses described panic as gunfire erupted, with people running, screaming and desperately seeking cover. One bystander, fruit shop owner Ahmed al Ahmed, was filmed bravely tackling one of the gunmen and wresting the weapon from him. His parents later revealed he was shot four or five times in the shoulder while trying to save others.

As the community struggles to process the tragedy, tributes have flooded Bondi Beach. Hundreds gathered at the Bondi Pavilion, laying flowers, lighting candles and holding Jewish and Australian flags. A handwritten sign placed among the bouquets read: “We stand united, no more hate, more love.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attack as a “dark day in Australia’s history” and said his government would push for tougher gun laws. It has emerged that the older attacker held a firearms licence for recreational hunting, raising urgent questions about gun access and public safety.

Jewish leaders have spoken of fear and heartbreak, warning that the need for constant security at public Jewish gatherings signals a deeper failure in society. Muslim organisations across Australia have also strongly condemned the attack, stressing that antisemitism and violence threaten all Australians.

As investigations continue, Australia mourns lives lost, celebrates acts of courage, and faces renewed calls to confront hate, extremism and gun violence before more lives are taken.

A security and counter-terrorism expert, Brant Philip, has claimed that the United States has begun conducting reconnaissance missions inside Nigeria as part of a military cooperation arrangement aimed at tackling growing terrorist threats in the region.

According to him, a US manned ISR aircraft flew over ISWAP-controlled areas in the southwestern part of Lake Chad, Borno State, on Saturday. He said the aircraft took off from Accra, Ghana, before entering Nigerian airspace and later returned the same route.

Philip stated earlier that the US Department of War had started reconnaissance flights over western Nigeria from its base in Ghana, despite no public announcement by the Nigerian government. He suggested that undisclosed agreements may have been signed behind closed doors.

He added that the alleged deal may allow the US to conduct unmanned airstrikes against terrorist targets in Nigeria, though only UAVs — not fighter jets or bombers — would be permitted. He said US forces would likely support Nigeria by filling intelligence and surveillance gaps using both manned and unmanned aircraft, possibly operating from the Kainji Air Base in Niger State.

On Sunday, Philip claimed that the same US ISR aircraft returned for the third consecutive day to monitor ISWAP’s “Mantiqah Krinwa” area in Borno State.

His claims have sparked mixed reactions. Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad criticised the disclosures, accusing the expert of revealing sensitive military information that could benefit ISWAP.

The allegations come amid tense relations between Nigeria and the US following past disagreements over terrorism-related assessments and warnings. A recent high-level meeting between Nigerian officials and US defence leaders focused on addressing violence against Christians and strengthening cooperation against jihadist groups in West Africa.

Despite the growing online discussion, neither the Nigerian government nor the United States has issued any official statement confirming or denying the presence of US reconnaissance or military operations on Nigerian soil.

Meanwhile, Nigeria continues to confront widespread insecurity, including kidnappings, killings, and banditry, leaving many citizens fearful and frustrated.

Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the judgment after Ismaila—widely known as Mai Tangaran—changed his plea from “not guilty” to “guilty.” His conviction follows years of legal delays, including appeals and a special hearing to determine whether his statements to investigators were given voluntarily.

According to investigators, Ismaila played a key role in planning and executing major attacks in 2012. These included strikes on the Police Headquarters in Bompai, the Mobile Police Base on Kabuga Road, and police stations in Pharm Centre and Angwa Uku. Several people were injured during these incidents.

He was eventually arrested in 2017 in Tsamiyya Babba, a village in Gezewa Local Government Area of Kano, and charged under Nigeria’s Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act.

During the trial, five witnesses—including DSS officers and civilians who lived through the attacks—testified against him. After the final witness took the stand, Ismaila unexpectedly changed his plea and expressed remorse. His lawyer pleaded for leniency, but the court handed down firm sentences: 15 years on the first charge and 20 years each on the remaining three. All will run concurrently, meaning his prison term dates back to his arrest in 2017.

The judge also ordered that Ismaila undergo rehabilitation and deradicalisation before he can return to society.

A coalition of respected Nigerians, under the banner of Concerned Nigerian Citizens, has appealed to the United States to withdraw its recent threats against Nigeria. The group also called on the Nigerian government to take full responsibility for tackling insecurity and safeguarding its people.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kaduna, Dr. Bilkisu Oniyangi said the group—made up of Nigerians from diverse backgrounds and faiths—came together to respond constructively to recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump had suggested that Nigeria could be relisted as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) and even hinted at possible military action.

According to Oniyangi, those comments have stirred anxiety and division across the country. “We are concerned that these developments could deepen our national fault lines and turn Nigeria into a pawn in global geopolitics,” she said.

She emphasized that Nigeria’s long-standing challenges—ranging from insecurity and poverty to poor governance—had made the nation vulnerable to foreign pressure. “This is our problem as Nigerians, and it will be solved by us,” she added. “What we need now is solidarity, not interference.”

The group acknowledged that while global partners such as the U.S., U.K., China, and Russia could support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism, the country’s sovereignty must remain non-negotiable. They urged President Bola Tinubu to show stronger political will and accountability, calling on him to directly reassure citizens that their safety is his government’s top priority.

“We encourage President Tinubu to stay focused on rebuilding trust and reforming our decaying security institutions,” Oniyangi stated. “He should resist unnecessary foreign trips and instead lead from home.”

The group also called on the President to appoint capable ambassadors who would defend Nigeria’s image abroad and prevent misinformation. They urged religious and community leaders to promote unity and tolerance, reminding Nigerians that insecurity affects everyone regardless of faith or ethnicity.

“Nigerians should not argue about who suffers more,” the group said. “Every life matters. This is a battle between peace-loving citizens—Muslims and Christians alike—and those who seek to destroy them.”

They also warned against growing foreign influence in the Sahel region, which they said could empower extremist groups such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, Ansaru, IPOB, and bandits. Such instability, they noted, threatens not only Nigeria’s unity but also the security of the wider region.

“Our independence and unity have been tested before,” Oniyangi concluded. “We will overcome again, but we need the support of genuine friends and allies.”

The group reaffirmed its commitment to working with the government and other stakeholders to promote peace, national cohesion, and lasting security across the country.

Trump recently threatened military action against Nigeria, alleging that Christians were being killed without government intervention. He warned that the U.S. could suspend aid if the killings continue.

In response, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government does not condone violence of any kind and that the killings are carried out by terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and ISIL, who target everyone regardless of religion.

“There is no Christian genocide in Nigeria,” said Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa. “The killing of any Nigerian is a loss to the country, and our government is firmly against it.”

The presidency added that while the U.S. is welcome to assist in combating terrorism, Nigeria’s sovereignty must be respected. Presidential aide Daniel Bwala expressed optimism that cooperation between both countries could lead to better results in fighting extremism.

President Bola Tinubu also defended Nigeria’s record on religious tolerance, saying his administration actively engages both Christian and Muslim leaders to promote peace and security nationwide.

Experts and analysts agree that Trump’s statements misrepresent the complex reality of Nigeria’s security crisis. Conflicts driven by extremist groups in the northeast have affected both Muslims and Christians for over a decade.

Humanitarian lawyer Bulama Bukarti described the “Christian genocide” narrative as misleading and dangerous, warning that such rhetoric could deepen division in an already fragile society. “These groups don’t target people based on religion — they attack everyone,” he said.

Similarly, analyst Ebenezer Obadare urged international cooperation rather than confrontation. “This is the time for support, not invasion,” he noted, emphasizing that undermining Nigeria’s authority would only make the situation worse.

Despite ongoing insecurity, the government maintains that Nigeria remains committed to protecting freedom of religion and ensuring peace for all its citizens.

The attacks were carried out in Dikwa, Mafa, and Gajibo in Borno State, as well as Katarko in Yobe State. In a statement, the army revealed that the terrorists used advanced weapons, including armed drones and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), to target military positions.

Some buildings and vehicles were damaged, and a section of the defenses in Mafa and Dikwa was briefly breached before troops regained full control. The military noted that the use of armed drones by the attackers shows their growing sophistication despite ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.

Troops reportedly fought back with superior firepower, recovering 38 AK-47 rifles, seven PKT machine guns, five RPG tubes, two GPMGs, and several grenades, along with thousands of rounds of ammunition. Ground troops, supported by air strikes, pursued fleeing terrorists, leaving dozens wounded.

Intelligence reports indicated that some of the attackers infiltrated from Cameroon, while others came from the notorious Timbuktu Triangle. Although a few soldiers sustained injuries, the army emphasized that they are receiving medical treatment and that no position was lost.

Military authorities praised the courage and professionalism of the troops, reaffirming their commitment to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and maintaining pressure on insurgents across the region.

Witnesses reported heavy explosions and gunfire as militants disguised as soldiers stormed the facility on Saturday evening, attempting to free imprisoned members of their group. Authorities confirmed that none of the inmates escaped and that all the attackers were neutralized.

A witness, Halima Hassan, described fleeing in fear when the fighting erupted. Ambulances rushed nearly 25 wounded individuals to hospitals, though the exact number of casualties among security forces remains unclear.

The attack came just hours after the government removed long-standing roadblocks across Mogadishu—measures originally put in place to protect key government buildings.

The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia condemned the raid, calling it a cowardly act that shows al-Shabab’s disregard for human life and its efforts to undermine Somalia’s progress toward peace and stability.

Mogadishu had enjoyed a relative period of peace as government troops, supported by local militias and African Union forces, pushed al-Shabab fighters out of key regions in central and southern Somalia.
