The incident involving United States Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III has sparked renewed debate about foreign influence in South Africa’s political landscape.

During a conference in the Western Cape, the ambassador reportedly criticised South African institutions and suggested that Washington’s patience with the country was running out. When questioned afterwards, he described his remarks as a personal opinion.

For many observers, however, the controversy raises broader questions about international influence in domestic political discourse.

South Africa has long navigated complex geopolitical relationships, balancing partnerships with Western nations, emerging powers and multilateral blocs such as BRICS. When diplomatic tensions arise, they often trigger deeper discussions about sovereignty and the limits of foreign involvement in national policy debates.

The incident has also reignited discussions about the role of international foundations and organisations that operate within South Africa’s civil society environment.

Some analysts point to the historical presence of organisations such as the National Endowment for Democracy, which has funded various civil society initiatives globally, including projects related to governance and democratic development.

Similarly, philanthropic networks associated with figures such as George Soros have supported educational, legal and civic initiatives in South Africa for decades, often focusing on government accountability, open governance and election monitoring.

Supporters of these initiatives argue that such programmes strengthen democratic institutions. Critics, however, contend that the influence of international funding networks deserves greater transparency, particularly when they intersect with domestic political debates.

The issue has become increasingly visible in the public discourse surrounding the 2026 elections.

While concerns about Russian or Chinese influence are frequently raised in political debates, questions about Western linked funding networks are often less prominently discussed.

For many voters, the principle of transparency should apply equally to all forms of foreign influence, regardless of the country or organisation involved.

If foreign involvement in South Africa’s political space is considered a legitimate concern, then scrutiny should extend to every external actor, whether from East or West.

Ultimately, the debate is not simply about diplomacy but about trust.

South Africans have a legitimate interest in understanding how international actors interact with domestic political and civic structures. Greater openness around funding relationships and partnerships could strengthen public confidence and ensure that political debates remain grounded in transparency.

The 17 young South African men who were reportedly lured into the Russia–Ukraine war front line made a serious mistake in how they went about it. That cannot be ignored. However, one fact remains: they have fought in a real war. They have experienced a live battlefield and modern combat conditions.

It was the responsibility of President Cyril Ramaphosa and the state to ensure that South African citizens were brought back home. That is a constitutional duty, nothing more and nothing less. Now that they are back, the country must decide how to move forward.

Those who recruited and misled them must be held fully accountable under South African law. Exploiting young men and exposing the country to international complications is reckless and unacceptable.

At the same time, the Minister responsible for the South African National Defence Force must now think carefully and act strategically. These 17 brothers have fought a real war. They are returning with lived combat exposure. There should be a structured military and security assessment process, and if they meet the standards, they should be formally integrated into the SANDF.

Experience matters. Modern warfare is not theory, it is reality. If properly vetted, trained further, and disciplined within official command structures, they could strengthen our defence capability. When they are fully prepared and cleared, they could even help lead troops where South Africa has commitments, including in the DRC.

We must also be honest about regional dynamics. South Africa has faced serious security challenges in the region, and tensions involving leaders such as Paul Kagame have raised difficult questions about sovereignty and the safety of our troops. The killing of our soldiers cannot simply be brushed aside. We must regroup, reassess, and strengthen our military readiness. Paul Kagame terrorised us, bullied us, and even killed our people in DRC

Many who claim veteran status in structures aligned to the uMkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association and even within the African National Congress have never seen modern frontline combat. Titles alone do not build a capable defence force.

National security is not a slogan. It requires discipline, accountability, strategic thinking, and a serious commitment to strengthening the South African National Defence Force for the challenges ahead.

His duty as Ambassador of the United States of America to South Africa is clear and defined by diplomatic convention: represent his country, strengthen bilateral relations, protect US citizens, and engage respectfully with the government of the day. It is not his role to dictate policy, threaten sovereignty, or attempt to reshape South Africa’s constitutional and foreign policy positions.

South Africa’s stance at the International Court of Justice, its international alliances, and its domestic policies are matters determined by its elected leadership and its Constitution. No ambassador has the authority to interfere in those sovereign decisions.

If he has come to build cooperation based on mutual respect, he will find partners. If he has come to lecture, pressure, or advance ideological agendas, he will quickly learn that South Africa is not a client state.

Diplomacy requires maturity and restraint. He must conduct himself accordingly and leave our policies to the people of South Africa.

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has slammed the Israeli Embassy and King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo of the AbaThembu for coordinating visits to provincial institutions including Walter Sisulu University and public hospitals and donating goods without the provincial government’s knowledge or approval.

Mabuyane said these engagements breached established diplomatic protocol, undermining South Africa’s constitutional system in which international cooperation must be managed through national channels such as the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and the National Treasury.

He called the actions an affront to the country’s sovereignty.

The premier has instructed the provincial Health MEC to investigate how the donations were accepted and said the government will work with national authorities to prevent future unauthorized foreign engagements.

Critics argue foreign diplomats must follow proper diplomatic channels, and that traditional leaders like King Dalindyebo have no mandate to engage independently with international missions on behalf of the province.

Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, has openly pushed back against growing pressure from the United States, saying she has had enough of Washington issuing instructions to her country.

Speaking to oil workers in the coastal city of Puerto La Cruz, Rodríguez said Venezuela must be allowed to resolve its own political differences without outside interference. Her remarks come as she works to steady the country following the capture of former leader Nicolás Maduro by US forces earlier this month.

Rodríguez has been walking a difficult line since stepping into the interim role. While backed by the United States, she has also tried to keep Maduro loyalists and divided political factions from turning against her at home. Nearly a month into her leadership, that balancing act is becoming increasingly strained.

“Enough already of Washington’s orders over Venezuelan politicians,” Rodríguez told the crowd. She stressed that the country has paid a heavy price for years of political extremism and conflict, and said Venezuela’s future must be decided by Venezuelans themselves.

Since Maduro and his wife were taken into US custody in January, Washington has maintained strong pressure on Caracas, including demands linked to oil production and foreign alliances. Rodríguez, who once served as Maduro’s deputy, has repeatedly stated that Venezuela is not governed from abroad, though she has avoided outright confrontation with the US.

At another public event, she said Venezuela does not fear the United States but called for mutual respect. She emphasized that any relationship between the two countries must be grounded in international law, dignity, and respect for Venezuela’s history and sovereignty.

US President Donald Trump initially claimed the United States would effectively “run” Venezuela after Maduro’s capture, before later endorsing Rodríguez as interim leader. He has since spoken positively about her, saying the two sides were getting along well.

Inside Venezuela, tensions remain high. The country is deeply divided between Maduro loyalists, left-wing groups critical of his leadership, and supporters of late president Hugo Chávez who believe Maduro betrayed the original socialist vision. Opposition leaders are watching developments closely, with uncertainty over what role they may play in shaping the country’s future.

Washington has reportedly laid out several conditions for cooperation, including demands that Venezuela cut ties with countries such as China, Iran, Russia and Cuba, and agree to work exclusively with the US on oil production. Oil remains Venezuela’s economic lifeline, with the country holding the world’s largest reserves of extra-heavy crude.

Alongside political pressure, the US has also called for the release of political prisoners. In recent days, more than 100 detainees were freed in what rights groups described as one of the largest single-day releases in years. Hundreds have now been released in total since early January.

Venezuelan officials say the releases are part of a broader effort to promote peace and coexistence, and have indicated they are open to international verification of the process. However, activists continue to demand transparency and a full public list of those released.

As Rodríguez attempts to stabilize the country, her latest comments signal a clear message: cooperation with the United States will continue, but not at the cost of Venezuela’s independence.

A coalition of respected Nigerians, under the banner of Concerned Nigerian Citizens, has appealed to the United States to withdraw its recent threats against Nigeria. The group also called on the Nigerian government to take full responsibility for tackling insecurity and safeguarding its people.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kaduna, Dr. Bilkisu Oniyangi said the group—made up of Nigerians from diverse backgrounds and faiths—came together to respond constructively to recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump had suggested that Nigeria could be relisted as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) and even hinted at possible military action.

According to Oniyangi, those comments have stirred anxiety and division across the country. “We are concerned that these developments could deepen our national fault lines and turn Nigeria into a pawn in global geopolitics,” she said.

She emphasized that Nigeria’s long-standing challenges—ranging from insecurity and poverty to poor governance—had made the nation vulnerable to foreign pressure. “This is our problem as Nigerians, and it will be solved by us,” she added. “What we need now is solidarity, not interference.”

The group acknowledged that while global partners such as the U.S., U.K., China, and Russia could support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism, the country’s sovereignty must remain non-negotiable. They urged President Bola Tinubu to show stronger political will and accountability, calling on him to directly reassure citizens that their safety is his government’s top priority.

“We encourage President Tinubu to stay focused on rebuilding trust and reforming our decaying security institutions,” Oniyangi stated. “He should resist unnecessary foreign trips and instead lead from home.”

The group also called on the President to appoint capable ambassadors who would defend Nigeria’s image abroad and prevent misinformation. They urged religious and community leaders to promote unity and tolerance, reminding Nigerians that insecurity affects everyone regardless of faith or ethnicity.

“Nigerians should not argue about who suffers more,” the group said. “Every life matters. This is a battle between peace-loving citizens—Muslims and Christians alike—and those who seek to destroy them.”

They also warned against growing foreign influence in the Sahel region, which they said could empower extremist groups such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, Ansaru, IPOB, and bandits. Such instability, they noted, threatens not only Nigeria’s unity but also the security of the wider region.

“Our independence and unity have been tested before,” Oniyangi concluded. “We will overcome again, but we need the support of genuine friends and allies.”

The group reaffirmed its commitment to working with the government and other stakeholders to promote peace, national cohesion, and lasting security across the country.
