The South African Broadcasting Corporation belongs to all of us — the people of South Africa — not to any political party or government. That’s the clear message from the Activists and Citizens Forum after worrying reports surfaced this weekend.

In a strongly worded statement issued today (22 March 2026), the group says it is “extremely disturbed” by claims in a Sunday newspaper that the ANC and the Presidency have been pressuring the SABC to axe its popular talk show Face the Nation. The alleged reason? The host, Clement Manyathela, is apparently “too harsh and negative.”

This isn’t the first time the public broadcaster has been accused of silencing critical voices, the forum points out. They’re drawing a direct line to the dark days of apartheid, when the SABC was weaponised to spread lies and shut down anyone who dared speak truth to power.

Read: Mabadliwe! Azania Movement Calls Out Ohaneze Ndigbo for Ignoring Traditional Rules in Chief Solomon Ogbonna Eziko’s Coronation

“We fought the National Party’s apartheid government then, and we will fight this one too if we have to,” the statement warns. “We will never allow the SABC to become a propaganda machine for any party or government.”

The group is now calling on Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Communications and Communications Minister Solly Malatsi to launch an immediate investigation into the allegations. If nothing is done, they say mass action against the SABC is on the table.

Litha Govuza and his friend who cannot be named because he fears for his were shot while waiting for their orders in a foreign national tuckshop on February 19.

Unfortunately Govuza was declared dead when he arrived at the hospital while.jis friend survived after he was shot twice in both legs. Govuza sustained five shot wounds and died on his way to hospital.

According to Apostle Tata Nxesi the Leader of Kingdom of God Ministries International in Driftsands in Mfuleni, Cape Town where Govuza was a keyboard player, said they want justice to prevail after Govuza was was and killed in front of two young children.

“On the Saturday (21 February 2026) evening after we were preparing for the Sunday Service with the Litha and the survivor and others, they decided to drop some people off in their himes and later they were meant to go join their study group and study Maths. While they were on their way to their study group, they decided to stop at the local shop and buy food and energy drinks.

“While they were still waiting for their orders, the criminals emerged from nowhere and started shooting at them for no reason. We are very traumatized about what happened to Litha who was a God fearing young man. A young man who wanted to perfect his Maths and go and study in University next year. Now it is all a dream which he will never realize because they took his life away. Litha was shot in tje head five times and his friend was shot twice in both legs,” he said.

On Friday a video emerged of a gunman from a Toyota Avanza, mumbling to himself and saying, “You think I’m playing?”who then then shouted at one of the men to get his attention, but when he attempted to shoot him in the back, the gun jammed.

One of the accomplices urged the gunman to shoot and stop talking. Both victims were shot in front of two young children who were inside the store.

According sources the two boys were shot in case of alleged misidentity.

“There are groups who extort money from these foreign nationals. These boys who are on the video shooting at those two boys had came earlier to extort loney but the shopowner told them that there is a group that came earlier and took the money. The boys left and came back armed and find Litha and his friend at the shop, they then thought it was the other group tjat had collected money earlier,” two well known sources said.

A powerful reminder of South Africa’s unemployment crisis unfolded at Mall of Africa, where thousands of job seekers gathered for interviews at RocoMamas.

The massive crowd, made up mostly of young South Africans, lined up hoping to secure just a handful of minimum-wage positions at the popular burger chain.

The scenes quickly went viral online — and they tell a deeper story about the growing pressure facing the country’s job market.

According to The Mzansi Plug here’s what people are saying:

“housands are competing for a few entry-level jobs, many applicants are graduates struggling to find employment and families across the country are feeling the impact as parents and young people battle to survive

For many of those standing in line, this wasn’t just about a job but it was about survival.

South Africa continues to face one of the highest unemployment rates in the world, with young people hit the hardest.

Experts warn that when thousands of qualified people fight over a few low-paying jobs, it signals deeper structural problems in the economy.

His duty as Ambassador of the United States of America to South Africa is clear and defined by diplomatic convention: represent his country, strengthen bilateral relations, protect US citizens, and engage respectfully with the government of the day. It is not his role to dictate policy, threaten sovereignty, or attempt to reshape South Africa’s constitutional and foreign policy positions.

South Africa’s stance at the International Court of Justice, its international alliances, and its domestic policies are matters determined by its elected leadership and its Constitution. No ambassador has the authority to interfere in those sovereign decisions.

If he has come to build cooperation based on mutual respect, he will find partners. If he has come to lecture, pressure, or advance ideological agendas, he will quickly learn that South Africa is not a client state.

Diplomacy requires maturity and restraint. He must conduct himself accordingly and leave our policies to the people of South Africa.

A Track Record of National Impact

Chief Justice Mandisa Maya, one of South Africa’s most distinguished legal minds, was recognised for her leadership in strengthening judicial independence, expanding access to justice, and championing gender representation in the legal profession. As the first woman to hold the positions of President of the Supreme Court of Appeal and Deputy Chief Justice, and now South Africa’s first female Chief Justice, she has played a pivotal role in transforming the judiciary and advancing constitutional values.

Rali Mampeule, Founder and CEO of the South African Housing and Infrastructure Fund (SAHIF), was honoured with the Special African Philanthropist Icon Award. He was the only South African nominated in the philanthropy category and was recognised for his sustained contribution to housing, education, and community upliftment. His investment in MetroFibre Networx has extended high-speed internet to more than 500,000 households, and through the Mampeule Foundation he has funded over 90 bursaries, provided COVID-19 emergency housing to vulnerable communities, and partnered with the University of Johannesburg and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation to introduce South Africa’s first 3D-printed affordable home.

The African Leadership Magazine Persons of the Year Awards are among the most esteemed continental honours, recognising Africans whose work is actively shaping the future of the continent. The awards highlight leaders who demonstrate integrity, long-term vision and a commitment to advancing development across Africa.

According to Hawks Spokesperson Katlego Mogale, it is alleged that during 2023, the first year National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funded students approached the suspect for assistance in accessing their allowances.

“As an SRC member at the time, she had prior access to students Tenet accounts. It is alleged that the suspect used this access to log into students account without authorization. It is further alleged that she withdrew funds at retail stores and subsequently explained to students on how to access their allowances after misappropriating the money,” said Mogale.

Mogale said that a total of R14 000 was unlawfully withdrawn from seven students accounts.

“A case docket was registered and handed over to the Hawks for further investigation culminating in the arrest of the suspect. She is expected to appear before the Rustenburg Magistrates Court on Thursday,” she said.

Five suspects, including four police officers from Limpopo, have been remanded in custody after appearing in the Mashishing Magistrate’s Court in connection with a major house robbery in Mpumalanga.

The group — identified as Senama Sarafina (35), Huma Malesela Daniel (34), Shogole Lesiba Lucky (41), Ledwaba Macdonald (34), and civilian Komane Johannes (29) — allegedly carried out the attack using police-marked vehicles. Investigators recovered R950,000 in cash, illicit cigarettes valued at R1.5 million, and ammunition.

Authorities say the robbery targeted Ethiopian nationals living in Mashishing (Lydenburg). The suspects reportedly stormed the house at night while the victims were asleep, using three vehicles — including a SAPS-marked VW Golf GTI, a grey Toyota double-cab, and another vehicle believed to be a Suzuki or Avanza — to transport the stolen goods.

Two Ethiopian nationals linked to the illicit cigarette consignment, identified as Daniel Anshiso Wikillo (38) and Temasgen Shagane Aleyo (33), also appeared in court and remain in custody pending further hearings.

Police have condemned the involvement of serving officers in the crime, reaffirming their zero-tolerance stance against corruption. The Hawks have launched a full investigation into the robbery and the suspected abuse of police resources.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has granted an official funeral for South Africa’s Ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, who died last week in Paris after a fall from a hotel building.

Mthethwa, 58, was found at the base of the Hyatt Regency hotel in western Paris, having reportedly fallen from the 22nd floor. French authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

His remains are expected to arrive at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday, with burial scheduled for Sunday in his hometown of KwaMthethwa, KwaZulu-Natal.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola confirmed that South Africa has scaled down its investigative delegation to France from five officers to just one senior officer. The official will liaise directly with French investigators and receive updates on the case.

Masemola emphasized that the move aims to ensure transparency and cooperation between both nations. “The late ambassador represented South Africa and the president abroad. It is our duty to engage our counterparts and receive firsthand information,” he said.

He added that the officer’s mission is not to conduct a separate investigation but to gather and relay information directly from French authorities.

Masemola assured the public that the death of a national figure abroad — especially one serving the president — would be handled with the utmost seriousness. “We owe it to the family and the nation to show that we are proactive and that the process is being managed responsibly,” he stated.

Mthethwa, a former Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, served South Africa with distinction before his diplomatic posting to France. His sudden passing has sparked grief across the nation, with tributes pouring in from government officials and the public alike.
