MK PARTY REINSTATES JOHN HLOPHE AS FIRST DEPUTY PRESIDENT AND PARLIAMENTARY LEADER

The Umkhonto weSizwe Party has reinstated John Mandlakayise Hlophe as its First Deputy President and Parliamentary Leader with immediate effect.

The decision was confirmed on Wednesday in an official circular issued by party Secretary General Siboniso Nomvalo.

According to the party, the reinstatement follows the conclusion of an internal process that was triggered by Hlophe’s suspension.

Nomvalo stated that Jacob Zuma, who leads the MK Party, had appointed an independent legal panel to investigate allegations levelled against Hlophe.

“The President appointed an independent legal panel led by an advocate to investigate the allegations and make recommendations,” Nomvalo said.

Following the investigation, Zuma held a bilateral meeting with Hlophe where the allegations were discussed extensively.

After this engagement, a decision was taken to reinstate him to both positions with immediate effect.

“The Secretary General hereby informs all structures and members that Dr John Mandlakayise Hlophe resumes his duties as First Deputy President and Parliamentary Party Leader with immediate effect,” Nomvalo confirmed.

The party has called on its members to support Hlophe as he returns to leadership.

Nomvalo encouraged members to extend a warm welcome to Hlophe as he resumes his responsibilities in advancing the party’s objectives, social cohesion and unity.

The reinstatement marks a significant development within the MK Party and is expected to have implications for its parliamentary strategy and internal dynamics moving forward.

Widow vs Alleged Partner: Court Battle Breaks Out Over Mosiuoa Lekota’s Estate

Just days after the burial of former Congress of the People (COPE) leader Mosiuoa “Terror” Lekota, a legal battle has already emerged over the assets of the late veteran politician.

According to reports by the Mail & Guardian, Lekota’s wife, Cynthia Lekota, brought an application for curatorship to place his affairs under protective oversight.

The proceedings were then challenged by fellow COPE member Luzelle Adams, who argued that she has a direct interest in the estate. Adams claims that she shared a property with the late politician and that they have a child together.

Adams previously served as a Member of Parliament for the Congress of the People (COPE) between 2009 and 2014.

During court proceedings, it was reported that about R400,000 had been withdrawn from Lekota’s bank account, while a safe at his property was allegedly found open and empty.

The withdrawal reportedly occurred on the same day his son, Kotane Lekota, was appointed interim curator of the estate.

Kotane Lekota was appointed interim curator on 12 February 2026, authorising him to take control of his father’s property and bank accounts, manage investments, and oversee the family’s financial affairs.

Meanwhile, many of the estate’s primary assets are reportedly held in the Mosiuoa Lekota Family Trust.

The appointment followed a ruling by Judge Millar, who found that Lekota had been of unsound mind and mentally incapacitated from May 2025 until his death on 4 March 2026. Medical reports presented in court cited severe cerebrovascular disease and significant cognitive impairment.

While Cynthia Lekota remains the legally married spouse of the late politician, Luzelle Adams is asserting that her alleged personal and financial ties to Lekota — including claims that they shared a property and have a child together — give her grounds to challenge aspects of the estate proceedings in court.

The matter is expected to continue unfolding in court as the dispute over the late COPE leader’s assets intensifies.

ANC stalwart Tokyo Sexwale paid tribute to Mosiuoa ‘Terror’ Lekota, describing him as a man who always stood for the truth and who had fulfilled his d uty to the nation.

Sexwale said Lekota was fearless in speaking out on community issues and service delivery, consistently raising concerns about corruption, water and electricity.

He stressed that Lekota’s legacy should live on through citizens who are equally courageous and vocal about the challenges facing the country. “We need more ‘Terrors’ in this country,” Sexwale said, noting that this was the spirit that defined Lekota’s leadership.

Sexwale also highlighted that Lekota’s appeal went beyond political lines. The fact that even farmers’ associations had praised him, demonstrated that Lekota was truly a non-racial leader who cared deeply about issues such as food security.

“To carry forward the mission of Terror,” Sexwale added, “we must understand that the nation comes before the party. The people must always come before party interests, and we must be prepared to lead in that spirit.”

He said Lekota was never defined by the shirt he wore but by his values. He was a national leader, a community builder and a fierce defender of education.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi Dismisses Arrangements To Release The Pension Payout For Former GDH CFO Lerato Madyo

The decision by the former Gauteng Department of Health Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Lerato Madyo to secretly took an allege settlement has come back to haunt her.

Madyo is fingered to be the person who could have saved the life of Babita Deokaran who was a corruption whistle-blower.

Deokaran was assassinated in a hit-style killing outside her south Johannesburg home in August 2021 after she flagged the Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal which cost it an estimated R800 million.

In her role as Chief Director in Financial Accounting, Deokaran had been a bulwark against irregular and dubious payments.

Owing to her position, she was also in control of the evidentiary paper trail left by those who preyed on public funds.

Madyo, who was warned by Deokaran about irregular contracts at Tembisa Hospital shortly before the whistleblower’s murder, did not resign as previously claimed.

New information in the Gauteng Legislature reveals Madyo actually left the department in July 2024 through a confidential settlement while facing disciplinary charges over procurement irregularities. At the time, the department told the public she had resigned.

Madyo had also been suspended on full pay for nearly two years, reportedly earning around R3 million, before the case was quietly settled.

On Thursday Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi noted the statements and allegations made by the Democratic Alliance (DA) regarding the monetary settlement reached between the GDH and Madyo.

Lesufi dismissed any insinuation that he was part of the arrangements to release the pension payout of the department’s former CFO and would like to point out that Madyo’s disciplinary hearing commenced prior to his tenure.

“The DA knows that in terms of the Public Service Act and applicable regulations, the Premier does not possess the authority to appoint or dismiss chief financial officers employed at the deputy director’s general level. Legally, that responsibility belongs exclusively to the Executive Authority overseeing the specific department that employs the individual.

“Regarding this case and in line with the legal prescripts, the Office of the Premier did not form part of the negotiations and decision-making that led to the monetary settlement. The Department of Health did engage the Office of the Premier after the agreement had been finalised, notifying the Premier of the outcome and requesting retrospective concurrence,” the statement reads.

Lesufi declined to grant this retrospective approval, citing the lack of consultation or prior involvement of his office.

“An independent legal firm has since been appointed to investigate the matter and determine whether the agreement was handled correctly and to advise on any further action required. The Premier shares the public’s concern regarding any expenditure of public funds and remains fully committed to rooting out corruption and ensuring accountability.We will not hide any form of wrongdoing, especially on matters related to the unfortunate loss of life of the late Babita Deokaran,” the statement reads.

South Africa To Honour COPE Founder Mosiuoa Lekota With Special Official Funeral

The South African government has announced that the late Congress of the People (COPE) founder Mosiuoa Lekota will be honoured with a Category 2 Special Official Funeral.

Flags across the country have been flying at half mast in honour of the veteran politician. The flags will remain lowered for seven days until his burial on 14 March in Bloemfontein.

Lekota, who also served as Free State Premier and later as South Africa’s Minister of Defence, passed away earlier this week.

Plans are now underway for several memorial events ahead of the funeral.

COPE Acting Chairperson Ndade Ndeghezi confirmed that two memorial services will be held next week to allow South Africans to pay their respects.

The first memorial service will take place on Tuesday in Pimville, Soweto in Johannesburg, where Lekota was involved in community mobilisation work.

A second memorial service will then be held in Bloemfontein on Thursday, giving residents of the Free State an opportunity to honour the former premier.

A church service will follow on Friday, reflecting Lekota’s strong connection to the Roman Catholic Church, before the funeral takes place on Saturday, 14 March in Bloemfontein.

Ndeghezi said the memorial services are expected to include contributions from several political traditions and organisations that formed part of Lekota’s long political journey.

Throughout his political career, Lekota was involved in several major movements including the Black Consciousness Movement, the United Democratic Front (UDF), the African National Congress (ANC), and later the Congress of the People (COPE).

Political leaders and members of the public have continued to pay tribute to Lekota, describing him as a nation builder and unifier who played an important role in South Africa’s democratic transition.

Lekota made history in 1994 when he became the first Premier of the Free State following South Africa’s first democratic elections. He later served in national government and became Minister of Defence.

As preparations continue for next week’s memorial services and funeral, tributes from across the political spectrum continue to highlight his legacy in South African politics.

MK Party Notes That The DA Handed The Chairmanship Of The Oversight Committee Of The Presidency To The ANC

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (“MK Party”) notes that what unfolded during the Deliberations on the oversight Committee on the Presidency on Friday, 6th March 2026, should concern every South African who believes that Parliament must hold those in Executive power accountable.

During the Meeting to elect a Chairperson of the oversight Committee on the Presidency, the vote stood as follows: the ANC received 5 votes, while an Opposition candidate nominated by Action SA and other Opposition Parties received 4 votes and the DA received 2 votes, after Voting for itself. The jury is Still out on whether the number 5 Constitutes the majority in a Committee of 11. This is developing dispute.

At a moment where the Opposition had an opportunity to unite behind a single candidate to prevent the ANC from controlling oversight of the Presidency, the DA chose instead to vote for itself. By doing so, the DA split the Opposition vote and Effectively “ handed” the Committee to the ANC, the same governing party that must now oversee the Presidency of Cyril Ramaphosa. This has created an intractable conflict of interest and defeats the whole purpose of the establishment of this supposed oversight Committee.

For a party that consistently claims to stand in Opposition to the ANC, the DA’s conduct yesterday raises serious Questions. When faced with the responsibility to ensure independent oversight of the Presidency, the DA chose Political ego over Cooperation. oversight of the Presidency is not a Political prize to be claimed by one party. It is a Constitutional duty that must serve the people of South Africa.

The purpose of this Committee is to ensure that the office of the President is subject to meaningful and independent Scrunchy by Parliament. A united Opposition could have ensured that the ANC doesn’t control this Critical Committee. Instead, the DA chose except Colonialism, and in doing so, created very outcome it now once again claims to oppose.

The MK Party, through its member of the oversight Committee on the Presidency, Chief Honourable Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi, will Continue to advocate for strong and independent oversight of the Presidency and will insist that this Committee chairmanship be reviewed to enable it to fulfill its Constitutional responsibility to hold the Executive accountable without fear or favour.

South Africans deserve a Parliament that places accountability above Political ego and Participating. A Parliament that respects the doctrine of Separation of powers. The work of oversight must always serve the public interest and never the narrow ambitions of any single party.
