Media personality and businesswoman Bonang Matheba is reportedly facing the possibility of asset seizure after the South African Revenue Service (SARS) issued a final notice over an alleged unpaid income tax debt of more than R7 million.

According to Sunday Times, SARS issued the notice of debt collection on 17 February, giving Matheba 10 business days to either settle the outstanding amount or make arrangements for payment.

If the matter is not resolved, the tax authority could pursue a civil judgment and obtain a writ allowing the sheriff of the court to attach and sell her assets.

The dispute is believed to relate to the alleged failure to submit personal income tax returns for the 2025 financial year. Matheba’s publicist has said that any tax-related matters remain confidential between the star and SARS.

SARS has also declined to comment on the specifics of the case, citing taxpayer confidentiality laws. However, the move is seen as part of the revenue service’s broader compliance drive targeting influencers and media personalities who earn income from endorsements, sponsorships and other digital revenue streams.

Matheba, one of South Africa’s most recognisable media personalities with millions of social media followers, has yet to publicly comment on the alleged tax dispute.

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry is expected to deliver a written judgment on Monday regarding a request by ANC member and North West businessman Suleiman Carrim to testify in camera.

Carrim’s application has sparked a major controversy ahead of his scheduled testimony before the Commission.

His legal team argues that appearing in a public hearing could place his life at risk. They maintain that Carrim and his family have been subjected to threats, forcing him to spend significant amounts of money on private security.

However, the Commission has disputed claims that Carrim was left without protection.

During proceedings, evidence leader Advocate Adila Hassim told the Commission that Carrim had previously been offered protection services but declined them.

Hassim raised the issue in response to Carrim’s claim that he has had to cover the costs of private security himself due to safety concerns.

Carrim’s lawyer, Advocate Kameel Premhid, argued that the request for in-camera proceedings is based on ongoing threats against Carrim and his family. According to Premhid, these threats include warnings that Carrim’s businesses could be burned down and that his family could be tracked even if they relocate.

The legal team told the Commission that the threats have created a serious risk to Carrim’s safety should his testimony take place in a public hearing.

Carrim is not new to controversy and has been linked to several allegations connected to a cancelled R360 million South African Police Service (SAPS) tender.

He is accused of receiving R1.5 million from controversial businessman Vusimuzi Matlala, who has been linked to the tender scandal.

Carrim has also been associated with suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, with reports of WhatsApp messages exchanged between Mchunu, Matlala and Carrim emerging during the course of investigations.

Carrim’s legal team had previously challenged the subpoena issued by the Commission in court but lost the case. They later secured a postponement of his appearance from an earlier date to 9 and 10 March, citing the need for additional preparation time.

On Friday, Carrim’s lawyers filed an interlocutory application requesting that his testimony be heard privately.

During the hearing, Commission chairperson Justice Mbuyiseni Madlanga expressed concern about the wording used in Carrim’s affidavit. Madlanga said the language appeared to suggest that the Commission had been responsible for the deaths of witnesses.

The Commissioner described this suggestion as serious and inappropriate, especially given the sensitive context of previous witness deaths linked to investigations, including Witness D and Wiandre Pretorius.

Madlanga also noted that previous applications for in-camera testimony had been dealt with openly and questioned what made Carrim’s situation different enough to justify secrecy.

He indicated that the Commission would need to carefully consider whether the application meets the legal threshold for private proceedings.

Evidence leader Sesi Baloyi also opposed Carrim’s request, arguing that he had not provided sufficient grounds to justify testifying behind closed doors.

Baloyi further argued that keeping the alleged threats confidential could prevent full public disclosure and undermine transparency in the Commission’s work.

She added that the application may have already been compromised by information that has entered the public domain.

The Commission is expected to release its written ruling on Monday, which will determine whether Carrim will testify in a public hearing or behind closed doors when he appears before the Madlanga Commission.

“I’m not a foreign agent.” These are the words of the controversial Forensic Investigator Paul O’Sullivan as he was explaining his three citizenships.

O’Sullivan is giving evidence before the SAPS Ad Hoc Committee on Tuesday.

Under oath, O’Sullivan stated that in his 40 years in South Africa and he has never performed any foreign agent activities and that his loyalty is to South Africa.

O’Sullivan explained that holding multiple passports was purely for travel convenience and emphasized that he has never supported any foreign government.

He also confirmed that his NGO, Forensics for Justice, receives no foreign funding and is fully transparent about donations, which are mostly small contributions from ordinary citizens.

A major focus is his multiple citizenships including Ireland as he had Irish parents, the UK because he was boorn there, and South Africa where he was naturalised as he has been living here for over 40 years.

Under questioning, O’Sullivan said:

“I can categorically state that I have not performed any foreign agent activities in 40 years, and in fact my loyalty is to South Africa.”

When he was asked about multiple passports he said:

“It’s very easy to have foreign passports because it’s very convenient to be able to travel around the world. The multiple passports story is a convenience.”

And on foreign funding for his NGO:

“We do not receive any foreign funding… From 2015 until present, anybody can look at our accounts, most years we’re lucky if we get R100,000 in donations for a year.”

O’Sullivan’s testimony comes amid ongoing investigations into senior policing figures and allegations of corruption, including the case of former Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi.

Rejects Deputy President Paul Mashatile attempt to avoid accountability for mounting Japan’s travel expenses.

Mashatile’s emanetes from the responses he gave parliamentary which wanted detailes about his Japan working visit, which took place from 16 to 19 March 2025.

Mashatile stated to parliament that during his trip to Japan he was accompanied by a high-level delegation including Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Thandi Moraka, Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Higher Education Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen, Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau, and Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Nomalungelo Gina.

Now in a twist of events ActionSA Parliamentary Chief Whip Matthew Goerge said his organization is baffled by Mashatile’s latest attempt to evade accountability for his international and domestic travel expenses.

George claims that Mashatile has tried to sidestep scrutiny by deflecting the question to DIRCO.

“This sly bureaucratic manoeuvre has rightly been rejected by Parliament. We also refuses to accept this evasive wriggle, with the National Assembly now returning the reply and recommending that the Mashatile respond fully and directly to our question. This attempted dodge comes after we exposed the Deputy President’s shocking R2.3 million trip to Japan, as well as the GNU’s nearly R300 million in combined travel expenses since taking office on our GNU Tracker,” he said.

George said that Action SA have introduced the Enhanced Cut Cabinet Perks Bill designed to rein in the extravagant perks enjoyed by Ministers.

“It is precisely this culture of entitlement and evasiveness that ActionSA seeks to end. That is why we have introduced the Enhanced Cut Cabinet Perks Bill. Addition, our Constitutional Amendment Bill proposes the complete abolition of all 32 Deputy Minister positions as outdated and wasteful layer of government that South Africa simply cannot afford.

“We will not allow the political elite to hide behind bureaucracy and live in luxury while South Africans struggle. We will continue to expose waste, demand accountability and fight for an ethical government that respects the people’s money,” he said.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will face tough questions before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on Wednesday, 8 October 2025, in one of South Africa’s most-watched hearings.

Mkhwanazi previously appeared before the Madlanga Commission, where he accused senior officials — including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya — of collusion with criminal syndicates and obstructing investigations into politically motivated killings.

Now, he’s returning to Parliament to provide more evidence of alleged political interference, corruption, and criminal infiltration within South Africa’s law-enforcement structures.

MDNtv unpacks:

What Mkhwanazi’s testimony means for SAPS and the justice system

How his claims implicate key government figures

Why this could reshape South Africa’s political landscape

The growing call for transparency and accountability
