The Soweto Derby has done it again — tickets are officially SOLD OUT in less than 24 hours.

Despite the match only taking place later next month, fans wasted no time as thousands rushed to secure their seats the moment tickets went live on Monday.

By Tuesday morning, there was nothing left.

Orlando Pirates, who will host the blockbuster clash, confirmed that every single ticket had been snapped up — proving once again that this is the biggest fixture in South African football.

Even releasing tickets early did nothing to slow the madness.

Supporters flooded the system, triggering a full sell-out within hours as anticipation for the clash between Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs reached boiling point.

The two giants will collide on 26 April at the iconic FNB Stadium, a venue that holds close to 100,000 fans — and still wasn’t enough.

The last meeting between these bitter rivals ended in humiliation for Chiefs, who were thrashed 3-0 by Pirates.

That crushing defeat sparked outrage among Amakhosi supporters, with many questioning the leadership of interim coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze.

Things went from bad to worse when Chiefs suffered another defeat against Richards Bay shortly after.

But the tide may be turning.

Chiefs have since bounced back with two consecutive wins, restoring belief among fans — and setting the stage for a potentially explosive revenge showdown.

One thing is certain:

This Derby is not just sold out — it’s already on fire.

Masilela Backs Mngqithi’s Ability but Warns of Challenges

Mngqithi has been strongly linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs, with his experience at Mamelodi Sundowns making him a credible candidate.

However, Masilela believes the Naturena-based club presents a unique challenge that could expose weaknesses in his management approach.

“At big teams, you have experienced players who tend to have opinions,” said Masilela.

“Some have a voice at times and question things, and some coaches don’t like that.”

Concerns Over Player Management

Masilela also reflected on Mngqithi’s short stint as head coach at Mamelodi Sundowns between July and November 2024.

During that period, reports suggested tensions between the coach and senior players, raising questions about his handling of high-profile individuals.

Notably, key players Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau were benched, a decision widely viewed as a clash of egos.

“When I look at that situation at Sundowns with Mokoena and Mudau, I couldn’t understand why those guys were not playing,” Masilela said.

“The coach explained that he was rotating the team to keep everyone fresh.”

Big Egos at Kaizer Chiefs

According to Masilela, success at Kaizer Chiefs will depend heavily on Mngqithi’s ability to manage strong personalities within the squad.

“Man management in today’s game is very key. You have to be able to manage big egos,” he said.

“If you can’t manage players with an ego or strong personalities, then you lose the trust of the team.”

A Potential Positive Impact

Despite his reservations, Masilela believes Mngqithi could still bring a positive influence to Kaizer Chiefs.

The former Bafana Bafana defender suggested that the coach’s tactical approach could introduce a more dynamic and refreshing style of play at the club.

Conclusion

While Manqoba Mngqithi remains a strong candidate for the Kaizer Chiefs job, questions around his ability to manage top players could determine whether he succeeds or struggles if appointed.

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has issued a blunt warning about what it takes to survive at Naturena, describing the club as a “monster” environment that exposes weakness quickly and completely.

In a detailed LinkedIn post, the veteran German coach said the pressure surrounding Kaizer Chiefs goes far beyond tactics and matchday preparation.

According to Middendorp, the Naturena environment is one of the most unforgiving in football because every decision, weakness and setback is immediately pushed into the spotlight.

“Coaching is not about following dreams, desires, or public expectations. It is about working with reality based on the type of players you have.” – Ernst Middendorp

COACHING CHIEFS REQUIRES MORE THAN TACTICS

Middendorp, who came close to winning the league title with Amakhosi in 2020, said a coach must have emotional strength as well as technical ability.

He identified stubbornness, confidence and emotional resilience as some of the most important qualities needed to succeed at the club.

He argued that a coach must be brave enough to stand by his football ideas even when fans and the media create intense pressure.

He also said confidence is needed to make unpopular decisions and defend them, while emotional resilience is essential for staying calm under public scrutiny.

THE REALITY OF THE KAIZER CHIEFS JOB

Middendorp said one of the biggest mistakes coaches make at Chiefs is trying to satisfy public expectations instead of working honestly with the players available.

He challenged the belief that the club must always play a certain style simply because of its history or fan expectations.

“Coaching is not about following dreams, desires, or public expectations,” Middendorp wrote.

“It is about working with reality based on the type of players you have.”

He said a coach’s most important responsibility is to assess the strengths and weaknesses of every player honestly and then build a structure that suits the squad.

According to Middendorp, team structure must come from individual player qualities, not from forcing a style that does not match the available personnel.

MIDDENDORP DEFENDS “HELICOPTER FOOTBALL”

The former Chiefs coach also defended the tactics he used during his spell at the club, which were often criticised and labelled “helicopter football.”

He said unusual systems can emerge when a coach stops forcing a fixed framework onto players who are not suited to it.

Instead, he argued, the right approach is to organise the team in a way that maximises strengths and protects weaknesses.

“At a team like Kaizer Chiefs, coaching leadership means clear assessment, bravery in decision-making, and building a structure that reflects the true strength of the team — not a fantasy of what people would like to see,” he wrote.

WARNING TO THE NEXT CHIEFS COACH

With names such as Benni McCarthy and Pitso Mosimane continuing to be linked with the Kaizer Chiefs job, Middendorp’s comments amount to a stern warning.

His message is clear: coaching Chiefs is not only about winning matches, but also about surviving one of the most demanding and heavily scrutinised environments in South African football.

His “monster” analogy suggests that unless the next coach is strong enough to block out the noise and trust his own decisions, the cycle of pressure and instability at Naturena may continue.

Casric Stars, a Motsepe Foundation Championship side, are owned and coached by Joseph “Bucs” Mthombeni, while Milford FC are owned and coached by Dr Xanti Pupuma.

The first major upset of the day came when Casric Stars defeated AmaZulu FC 2-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

The Mpumalanga based club stunned the hosts in front of their home supporters, securing their place in the club’s first ever Nedbank Cup semi final.

Casric Stars took the lead through Mfundo Thikazi, but AmaZulu responded late in the match when experienced midfielder Pule Ekstein scored a dramatic equaliser in the final minutes of regulation time to force the match into extra time.

However, Casric Stars refused to back down.

With just five minutes remaining in extra time, Decide Chauke produced the decisive moment, scoring the winning goal that sealed a 2-1 victory for the Motsepe Foundation Championship side.

The victory continues Casric Stars’ reputation as giant slayers, having already knocked Orlando Pirates out of the Nedbank Cup earlier in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Milford FC also delivered a huge shock result by eliminating Sekhukhune United.

The match ended 1-1 after regulation time, forcing the encounter into extra time and eventually a penalty shootout.

The Richards Bay based club held their nerve from the spot, defeating Babina Noko 3-2 on penalties to secure their place in the semi finals.

Meanwhile, two more Nedbank Cup matches are scheduled for today.

TS Galaxy will face JDR Stars at 15:00, while Durban City will take on Golden Arrows in a KwaZulu Natal derby at 18:00.

As the tournament approaches its final stages, the remarkable runs of Casric Stars and Milford FC have proven once again why the Nedbank Cup remains one of South African football’s most unpredictable competitions.

Motaung Jr flatly refused to comment if the Chiefs will be able to push for signing either Mosimane or McCarthy to save the sinking ship.

Kaizer Chiefs is currently being coached by Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef.

During his interview with Robert Marawa on Marawa Sports Worldwide, Motaung Jr said it was improper for him to comment about Mosmane and McCarthy since they already have two coaches at the club.

“You’re mentioning two top individuals who’ve achieved tremendous things in their careers. It would be unfair of me to sit here and talk about coaches when we have coaches within the team. We have our immediate mandate and responsibility to restore the pride and the hurt that’s been happening to the nation and to the team.

Motaung went on to say: “I can’t sit here and talk about individuals. It’s not professional. I don’t think it’s the right thing to do. I have a lot of respect for both of those gentlemen; they’ve achieved a lot through their playing days and as coaches. It’s always an honour to be associated with people like that.”

When asked if there will any big name coach at the club, Motaung Jr avoided the question again.

“Chiefs is a big team. We want the best coaches. The most experienced, the highest quality. That’s exactly what we want. That’s the direction we see ourselves. When we sat down and presented our 2030 plan.

“The continent is very important to us. So in terms of our strategy, continental football is a must. So we want to be on that stage. We want the calibre of players, personnel, analysts, and coaches who can take us to that stage. We want to associate ourselves with the best of the best,” he said.

Motaung Jr made it clear that Kaze and Youssef will run the bench of Kaizer Chiefs until the end of the season when he was cornered about their future in the club.

Kaizer Motaung Jr further revealed why Kaze wears an earpiece

“At the moment in time you’ve got Cedric who is connected to our analysis team,” he told Marawa.

“We have our analysis team who sit up top, and they’re busy with the live data, the coding, and they communicate what they see from an analysis perspective down to the bench and down to the technical team.”

The protest march stems from the poor results that has the Naturena based football being knocked out in all cup competitions this year.

The latest protest march is scheduled to held at Shell opposite Sun City to Naturena Village.

The angry fans are demanding change, they are demanding a new coach and demanding quality players.

Their stems from the two defeats the club recently suffered at the hands of their rival Orlando Pirates and Richards Bay FC. Attempts to get comment from Glamour Boys Spokesman Vina Maphosa as calls were ignored.

WhatsApp messages were sent too but there was no response.
