A 41-year-old man from Carnarvon in the Northern Cape has been sentenced to five years’ direct imprisonment for assaulting his eleven-year-old son.

The accused was found guilty by the Carnarvon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 4 February 2026.

The incident occurred at the family home in Carnarvon on Tuesday, 5 August 2025, between 20:00 and 20:30, after the minor requested his cellphone SIM card from his father.

What started as a minor argument quickly escalated into a violent assault. The accused repeatedly lashed the child with a belt, inflicting serious injuries and emotional trauma.

The victim initially managed to escape; however, the accused demanded that he return. Upon reaching him, the accused threw the child to the ground, sat on top of him, and assaulted him further.

The accused punched, kicked, and choked the victim before striking him with a knee to the ribs.

The victim cried out for help, which alerted his mother, who intervened and came to his rescue.

A case of Assault with Intent to Cause Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) was subsequently opened at the Carnarvon Police Station, which led to the arrest of the accused on 11 August 2025.

On Wednesday, 4 February 2026, the accused was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

Sergeant Marlon Eksteen of the Carnarvon Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit investigated the matter and ensured a thorough investigation in pursuit of justice for the victim.

Mmapeu Neo Hlanga was allegedly dossed with acid by Ivyone Maja who accused her of dating her partner in October 2024.

The incident left her with injuries that need to be operated at cost of an estimated to be R300 000.

After the court found the perpetrator guilty of attempted murder on December 1, 2025, the matter was postponed to February 9, 2026, for sentencing.

The court’s decision was based on a disturbing sequence of events that revealed the premeditated nature of the crime.

The acid attack, which left Mmapeu with severe injuries and a long road to recovery, was captured on video footage.

The footage showed the accused displaying extreme anger and a refusal to accept the termination of her relationship, threatening to publish intimate images of Mmapeu, and boasting about having caused her to lose her job.

The video evidence clearly indicated premeditation and intent to harm.

The sentencing will take place atMokopane Magistrate’s Court today.

Two murder accused are set to apply to be released on bail on the 27 January’ in the Ga- Rankuwa magistrate court in the North West while the family is leaving in fear after the gruesome murder of their daughter Lesego Masina.

Paulos Masina (not the biological father) who is the alleged mastermind and Maisela Freddy Kekana who is the lleged gunman appeared before the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

It was confirmed in court that the accused intend to apply for bail.

Now the family of Lesego fears for its safety as the accused in her murder prepare to apply for bail, a move that has sparked anger, anxiety and renewed calls for justice from the community.

The family stated that it is strongly opposed to any bail being granted, citing serious safety concerns and saying they fear for their lives should the accused be released on bail.

Two other suspects linked to the case remain at large.

Ofentse Masina, Lesego’s younger sister, thanked the community for standing with the family.

“We appreciate the community for the prayers, messages of encouragement and the presence of supporters at court. We feel protected and uplifted by the unity shown by the community,” she said.

Ofentse further said: “We call on the community to remain united, calm and vigilant as the case continues. Our focus remains on justice, accountability and safety, while allowing the legal process to take its course.”

The Masina urged the community to come out in numbers and that transport will be provided when the accused appears in court again on 27 January.

Majola appeared in court on the charge of premeditated murder, following the fatal shooting of DJ Warras in Johannesburg on 16 December 2025. The court heard that the matter has been postponed to 6 January 2026 to allow for further legal processes.

Majola is expected to apply for bail at his next appearance. The State has indicated that it will oppose any bail application, citing the seriousness of the charge and the interests of justice.

In a further development, prosecutors confirmed that charges against a second suspect linked to the case have been provisionally withdrawn. The National Prosecuting Authority has not ruled out the possibility of reinstating charges should new evidence emerge.

DJ Warras, whose real name was Warrick Stock, was a well known DJ, radio presenter, and television personality. His killing sent shockwaves through the media and entertainment industry, prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes from colleagues, artists, and fans across the country.

As the legal process unfolds, public interest in the case remains high, with many closely watching the upcoming bail proceedings and the State’s case against Majola.

A Gauteng woman is facing deep financial distress after Nedbank moved to recover more than R365,000 on a home loan linked to a property that no longer exists.

Evodia Tshabalala bought a house in the Protea Glen Estate in Soweto in July 2012, financing the purchase through Nedbank. What was meant to be a fresh start soon turned into a nightmare when serious structural defects began appearing shortly after she moved in.

Cracks spread through the walls of the newly built home, raising alarm over its safety. Inspections by regulatory authorities, including the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC), confirmed that the defects were severe. The house was eventually declared uninhabitable and demolished due to structural failure, leaving only vacant land behind.

Despite losing her home, Tshabalala remains responsible for the mortgage. After falling behind on monthly repayments of R4,970, her arrears grew to more than R99,000, prompting Nedbank to approach the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg to recover the outstanding debt.

With no house to live in, Tshabalala was forced to rent alternative accommodation while continuing to carry the burden of a bond for a demolished property. The matter was also reported to the Office of the Public Protector.

During pre-hearing discussions, Tshabalala — who was not legally represented — reached a verbal agreement with the bank that gave her four months to resolve the issue. However, acting judge Ntebo Nkoenyane expressed concern that the timeframe was unrealistic given the complexity of the case.

The judge noted that Tshabalala may have valid claims against third parties, including the property developer and builder, and stressed that proper legal advice was essential. She described Tshabalala as a victim of a failed housing project and warned that proceeding too quickly could result in serious injustice.

Judge Nkoenyane proposed that a one-year suspension would be more appropriate, allowing Tshabalala time to seek legal assistance, pursue possible claims, negotiate with the bank, or explore options such as selling the land, restructuring the debt, or approaching consumer protection bodies.

While the court ultimately ruled in Nedbank’s favour by declaring the property executable, the order was suspended for one year. Nedbank was granted a reserve price of R355,000, with interest on the outstanding amount set at 9.40% from September 2025.

The judge emphasised that the suspension does not erase Tshabalala’s financial obligations, but is intended to prevent financial ruin and allow for a fair and balanced resolution for all parties involved.

By Lwandile Hlekwayo

The idea that criminals run rampant without any repercussions has been the lens through which we view our society in this democratic age. This rhetoric is not apparent for Kyle May (33), who on Tuesday was sentenced to a year in prison for malicious injury to property at the Ethekwini Magistrate’s Court.

May, who is a repeat offender, could not be given the maximum sentence for his actions as his previous convictions were now older than 10 years. The courtroom was stunned to hear the magistrate speak strongly about May, as she believed he had not learnt anything from his previous encounters with Westville Prison. The magistrate also exposed the State’s negligence in charging May with malicious injury to property instead of attempted theft, as she stated that “nobody damages a gate motor with the intent to not enter and steal”.

The courtroom’s silence was deafening as the public watched the magistrate flex her might as she reprimanded May in a manner a parent would scold her child. The magistrate reminded May that going forward he cannot refer to himself as a primary caregiver to his child if he is in and out of prison. An error from the State led to May not being charged with attempted theft, and this led to him being sentenced to a year in prison. This highlights the important role police play in ensuring that offenders are charged accordingly, as mistakes such as these have serious repercussions.

May was arrested on the 14th of June 2025 after damaging the gate motor of a Durban property. The owner of the property triggered a silent alarm and Blue Security responded swiftly to apprehend May as they waited for the police to arrest him. The average South African is not privy to such information as we are constantly bombarded with news that unintentionally perpetuates hopelessness in our justice system and therefore is under the impression that criminals are constantly getting away with crime.

Kyle May will spend the next year in Westville Prison, proof that the system can work when all its parts align. His case won’t make national headlines or shift public perception overnight, but it represents a small victory in the daily grind of criminal justice. The magistrate delivered justice within the constraints she was given, even as she called out the State’s failure to charge appropriately. For the Durban homeowner whose property May targeted, and for the community Blue Security serves, this conviction matters. Perhaps the real story isn’t whether criminals face consequences—it’s whether we’re paying attention when they do.
