The Smile Foundation Surgical Week, unveiled this morning during a media briefing at the Frere Hospital  boardroom, will see 14 children undergo life-changing surgeries to correct conditions such as cleft lip and  palate, burn injuries, and other congenital abnormalities. The initiative reflects the province’s commitment to healthcare access, equity, and the healing of both visible and invisible wounds.

Among the children receiving care is 11-month-old Zenazi, who was born with a cleft palate. His grandmother, Mrs. Mafanya, shared the emotional journey leading to the surgery:

“Whenever I fed him, his formula or milk would cause nasal regurgitation as the cleft in the palate would allow the milk to flow into the nasal passages. He is crying now as he is in pain post the surgery, but the joy I feel is truly unexplainable.”

Led by a team of dedicated surgeons and supported by hospital staff, the Smile Week program is not only a medical intervention but a symbol of renewal for families who have long faced social stigma, financial challenges, and emotional stress.

Addressing the various media houses and stakeholders, Dr. Rolene Wagner, HOD- ECDOH, emphasized the power of collaboration:

“I stand here today not only to express our gratitude but also to issue an earnest call to action. The success we celebrate here at Frere Hospital is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through strategic partnerships.”

These partnerships include contributions from local and national sponsors such as Spur, Milky Lane, and Discovery, whose support has helped make this surgical week possible.

Dr. Silvia Passoni, Chief Operating Officer of the Smile Foundation, praised the courage of both children and their caregivers:

“We are deeply grateful to all stakeholders, but most of all, we honour the bravery of the mothers,

grandmothers, and young patients. They are the true heroes of this journey.”
