PREMIER RAMATHUBA TO VISIT LEARNERS INJURED IN SEKHUKHUNE SCHOLAR TRANSPORT ACCIDENT

Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba will today (15 May 2026) visit learners admitted at Jane Furse Hospital following a tragic scholar transport accident in Sekhukhune District, where two Grade R learners lost their lives, and five others sustained injuries.

She will be joined by MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Violet Mathye.

According to reports, a Toyota Quantum transporting learners from Mannyetha Primary School lost control after hitting a rock on the D4246 road between Ga-Nkoana and Apel Cross on Wednesday, 13 May 2026. The vehicle caught fire immediately, and sadly, two Grade R learners died at the scene, and five others sustained burn injuries.

The injured learners were first taken to Ga-Nkoana Clinic before being transferred to Jane Furse Hospital for further treatment. Premier Ramathuba has requested a full report on the circumstances of the accident.

The Premier has extended her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, school community, and learners: “On behalf of the provincial government, we send our deepest condolences to the families of the two learners who lost their lives in this tragic incident. No parent should have to endure such a loss after sending their child to school. We equally wish a speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries.”

Another Brief Appearance For Vaal Scholar Transport Crash Driver

The driver of the minibus taxi that collided with a side-tipper truck on the R553 in Vanderbijlpark earlier this year made another brief appearance in the Vanderbijlpark Regional Court on Wednesday morning.

Ayanda Dludla, 22, is facing 14 counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder, among other charges, following the deadly scholar transport crash.

Dludla has made several court appearances as the matter continues to face delays, particularly around his expected bail application.

During Wednesday’s brief proceedings, the court heard that the docket is still with the Director of Public Prosecutions, and that a decision on certain aspects raised during the previous appearance has not yet been finalised.

The State explained that the docket still needs to be collected before the formal hearing and bail application can proceed. This means the matter will again be postponed until the State has the docket.

Dludla’s legal representative, Advocate Nxumalo, placed on record that the parties had agreed that the bail proceedings would fall under Schedule 5.

“I would like to place on record that we have agreed on the schedule, to say that the bail schedule will be Schedule 5 and the bail will proceed per charge currently on 18 June 2026,” Advocate Nxumalo said.

The repeated postponements have left the parents of the 14 learners frustrated and disappointed. Some parents expressed anger over how the matter is being handled, saying they want justice for their children.

One parent could not hold back tears after the adjournment, while others continued to voice their frustration outside the court.

The matter has been postponed to 18 June 2026 for a formal hearing involving the investigating officer and for the bail application to proceed.

Dludla will remain in custody until his next court appearance.

Multiple Murder Accused Scholar Driver Abandons Bail

The 22-year-old scholar transport driver, Ayanda Dludla who is facing multiple murder charges of learners abandoned his bail application.

Dludla appeared at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ Court in Vaal outside Gauteng on Thursday.

National Prosecuting Authority Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said Dludla is facing 14 counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, as well as charges of operating a motor vehicle without a certificate of fitness, driving without a professional driving permit and operating an unlicensed motor vehicle.

“It is alleged that on 19 January 2026, the accused was driving a scholar transport vehicle on the R553 Golden Highway, transporting 16 learners, when he allegedly collided head-on with an oncoming truck.

“The collision resulted in the deaths of 14 learners, while two learners and the truck driver sustained injuries.

In court, the accused elected not to be released on bail. The matter was postponed to 05 March 2026 for further investigations,” said Mahanjana.

Dludla will be reminded in custody.
