Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo, the Divisional Commissioner of Crime Intelligence in the South African Police Service (SAPS), has been honoured with a special commemorative insignia coin by Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni.

The award was presented on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, during the official launch of the National Centre for Intelligence Coordination (NCIC). Khumalo was recognised as one of the key leaders responsible for driving South Africa’s new unified intelligence efforts.

Khumalo rose to prominence after testifying at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in 2025. As the former head of the Political Killings Task Team in KwaZulu-Natal, he exposed how criminal syndicates had infiltrated policing, politics, and other state institutions.

He famously revealed the activities of the so-called “Big Five” cartel — a powerful Gauteng-based network allegedly involved in drug trafficking, contract killings, cross-border vehicle hijackings, tender fraud, and extortion. He publicly named Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and Katiso “KT” Molefe as key figures with high-level political connections.

The commemorative coins, which carry the NCIC insignia, were also awarded to other senior officials: Dr N Sifolo (Acting Coordinator for Intelligence), Ambassador T Msimanga (Acting Director-General of the State Security Agency), and Lieutenant-General T Mxakato (Chief of Defence Intelligence).Receiving the coin is not just symbolic — it represents a serious responsibility to deliver timely, coordinated intelligence from across crime, defence, domestic, and foreign streams.

The NCIC was established under Section 4 of the National Strategic Intelligence Act of 1994 to reduce fragmentation between intelligence agencies and better support government decision-making on national security threats.

A routine stop and search operation by law enforcement authorities in Tembisa has led to the arrest of a passenger found in possession of an illegal firearm, as well as a woman accused of attempting to bribe officers.

The joint operation, conducted by Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens STT and SAPS Ivory Park, took place over the weekend in Tembisa and surrounding areas. Officers intercepted a white Nissan Almera that was operating as an e hailing vehicle.

During the stop, officers instructed both the driver and passenger to exit the vehicle for a routine inspection. While the driver cooperated, the passenger attempted to flee on foot but was quickly pursued and apprehended by officers.

A search of the suspect led to the discovery of an unlicensed firearm loaded with 15 rounds of live ammunition.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the firearm may be linked to a deceased individual from Diepsloot. The suspect was immediately placed under arrest.

In a separate incident at the scene, a 20 year old woman allegedly approached officers and attempted to offer a bribe of R4 600 in exchange for the release of the detained suspect. She was also arrested and charged with bribery.

Both suspects are currently being held at SAPS Ivory Park. The firearm, ammunition and cash have been seized and booked as exhibits as investigations continue.

The suspects are expected to face charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as bribery.

An investigation is underway following an incident in which a South African Police Service constable allegedly assaulted a member of the public, with a video of the incident widely circulated on social media.
The incident is reported to have taken place on 02 April 2026 at the Volksrust Police Station in Mpumalanga.
According to Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the matter is being treated with seriousness, and an internal investigation has already been instituted to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“In addition to the internal investigation, a criminal investigation is also underway to ensure that all aspects of the matter are addressed transparently,” Mdhluli said.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has also been notified and is expected to conduct a parallel investigation.
Mdhluli said the involvement of IPID aligns with the SAPS commitment to accountability and transparency in policing.
“The SAPS remains steadfast in promoting professionalism and upholding the Code of Conduct, which governs the behaviour of all members,” he said.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, has also weighed in on the matter.
“The professional conduct of our members is of utmost importance, and we are committed to maintaining public trust. We are determined to act swiftly and decisively against any wrongdoing,” he said.
Investigations remain ongoing.

The Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court in Gauteng has sentenced police officer Rhulani Herbert Maringa (44) to 12 years’ direct imprisonment for stock theft.

Maringa, who was attached to the Cullinan Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit of the South African Police Service (SAPS), was convicted of stock theft involving cattle valued at R80 000. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the offence dates back to 17 April 2019, when two accused persons, who later turned state witnesses, stole cattle from Zonderwater Correctional Services in Cullinan on Maringa’s instructions.

“The matter came to light after police received a tip-off from a farmer to whom the stolen cattle had been sold. When the two individuals returned to the farm to collect payment, they were arrested. Upon their arrest, the two accused cooperated with the police and revealed that Maringa was involved in planning the offence. They also indicated that he had escorted them to the Gaudveld Farm, where there is an abattoir and butchery,” she said.

Mahanjana said Maringa pleaded not guilty during the trial and denied any involvement.

“However, Regional Court Prosecutor Advocate Patsy Jacobs presented compelling evidence that proved the State’s case beyond a reasonable doubt. In mitigation of sentence, Maringa, through his legal representative, asked for leniency on the basis that no financial loss was ultimately suffered because the cattle were recovered and returned to the Department of Correctional Services.

“Advocate Jacobs opposed this, arguing that Maringa, as a police officer assigned to a stock theft unit, had a heightened duty to prevent such crimes and had instead abused his position. She urged the court to impose the prescribed minimum sentence.

“In handing down the sentence, the Regional Court Magistrate agreed with the State, emphasising that police officers are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity and that the courts have a responsibility to protect the property rights of citizens,” she said.

KwaZulu-Natal has been rocked by yet another deadly confrontation between police and violent criminals, as two wanted murder suspects were shot and killed during a high-stakes operation in Verulam, north of Durban, in the early hours of Thursday.

The suspects, believed to be behind two separate double murders earlier this year, were tracked down to a house in the eMhlasini area following a coordinated intelligence-driven operation.

Specialised units including SAPS eThekwini Outer North Crime Intelligence, Durban North SAPS Trio Crimes Unit, Newlands East SAPS Trio Crimes Unit, Durban Metro Police Trio Crimes Unit, and private security partner K9 Saint Security closed in on the suspects.

As officers approached, the suspects allegedly opened fire, triggering a fierce shootout.

Both men were killed during the exchange.

Police recovered two firearms at the scene, adding to growing evidence of heavily armed criminal networks operating in the province.

The latest incident signals an intensified crackdown under the leadership of Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, with police increasingly taking the fight directly to violent offenders.

This comes just days after another dramatic takedown on the KZN South Coast, where a 41 year old suspected hitman was shot dead by police in Pinetown.

The suspect was reportedly linked to more than 10 murder cases and was believed to be hours away from executing a contract killing targeting officials from the Umdoni Local Municipality.

Police tracked him to his hideout, where he allegedly opened fire upon their arrival. Officers responded, killing him in a brief but decisive shootout.

No police officers were injured, and multiple firearms were recovered.

With back-to-back operations resulting in the deaths of high-risk suspects, authorities appear to be tightening the net on organised crime in KwaZulu-Natal, sending a strong message to those involved in violent criminal activities.

The province remains on edge as police continue their aggressive pursuit of wanted suspects.

The Mayibuye Youth Movement notes with great concern that the number one general of SAPS the National Commissioner, Fannie Masemola who is entrusted with ensuring that the entire police machinery, from top to bottom, is coordinated, disciplined, and responsive to the safety of ordinary South Africans, is now himself implicated in a Medicare tender linked to the notorious Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

This is the same office responsible for giving direction, enforcing discipline, and ensuring that every police station, every unit, and every officer responds to the daily reality of crime in this country. Yet that very centre is now shaken.

You cannot expect a system to fight crime when its highest command is entangled in dealings linked to those very networks.

That is why we say SAPS is compromised.

Because what we are witnessing is not an isolated incident it explains the lived reality of our people.

Our communities are flooded with drugs. Nyaupe is destroying a generation in the townships.

Gang violence has become normal.

Victims of gender-based violence continue to wait for justice that never comes.

At the same time, those entrusted with protecting society are now linked to corruption and criminal networks.

So what must South Africans conclude? That the system meant to protect them has been captured.

This capture is not abstract it is happening under the political leadership of President Cyril Ramaphosa and the ANC. The ANC cannot distance itself from this. It is unfolding under their watch, within institutions they lead and control.

The ANC has become an enabler of this decay.

At the same time, government must begin to take responsibility for how it prioritises resources. While commissions are established and funded to probe political interference within the criminal justice system, communities are still waiting for basic answers.

Young people remain unemployed.

Villages still face water shortages.

Access to education remains unequal.

The same urgency, energy, and resources directed towards commissions like the Madlanga process must also be directed towards fixing these lived crises and more importantly, towards cleaning up the security cluster itself.

We further state, without hesitation, that any form of intimidation against whistleblowers must be condemned particularly against Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who has brought some of these issues into the public domain.

Those who speak out must be protected, not intimidated by some leaders who lead organisations that are not growing, “fiefdoms”.

The Mayibuye Youth Movement is clear to say that all those implicated whether the President, the Minister, the National Commissioner, or anyone else must face the full might of the law.

Controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has appeared before the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court in Gauteng, joining 12 other accused in a high-profile corruption case linked to the R360 million Medicare24 tender.

Matlala is appearing alongside thirteen accused, including senior South African Police Service (SAPS) officers and executives linked to Medicare24. The group faces charges of corruption, fraud, and contravention of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

Among the accused is Medicare24 Group managing director James Murray, as well as Matlala, who is listed as accused number one and is the majority shareholder of Medicare24 Tshwane District.

Matlala arrived late at court as he remains in custody on separate serious charges. He is currently facing more than 20 charges in the Johannesburg High Court, including 11 counts of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering.

These charges relate to multiple incidents between August 2022 and January 2024, including an alleged failed hit on his former girlfriend and socialite Tebogo Thobejane in October 2023.

The SAPS officials facing charges include General Busi Temba, Brigadier Ofentse Tlhoaele, Brigadier Kistey Jonker, Brigadier Thembinkosi Ngema, Colonel Nehemiah Maleka, Colonel Johannes Monyai, Captain Brian Cartwright, Colonel Anthony Paulsen, Brigadier Rachelle Matjeng, Brigadier Petunia Lenono, Colonel Nonjabulo Mngadi, and Brigadier Patrick Nethengwe.

They are accused of playing a role in facilitating the irregular awarding of the 2024 Medicare24 tender.

The arrests were carried out by the National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) following coordinated raids as part of a broader investigation into procurement irregularities within SAPS.

The controversial tender was later cancelled amid concerns over fronting, compliance failures, and possible undue influence in the awarding process.

The matter was previously flagged by Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu, who is currently on special leave.

The newly formed Afrika Mayibuye Movement, led by Floyd Shivambu, has publicly backed KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, calling for urgent, independent probes into alleged corruption, syndicate infiltration, and political interference in the South African Police Service (SAPS).

In a today March 23 statement, the movement praised Mkhwanazi as a figure of “principle, courage, and consistency,” highlighting his July 2025 press conference where he claimed drug cartels influence politicians, SAPS officials, prosecutors, judiciary members, and business leaders, with drugs imported via Durban and processed in Gauteng.

The party stressed that no evidence has disproven his allegations and urged him to ignore public attacks aimed at distracting from the core issues.

The statement comes amid criticism from Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema, who has called Mkhwanazi a “coward,” denied EFF involvement in corruption, and rejected any links to testimonies before the Madlanga Commission and related parliamentary committees.

Mkhwanazi’s claims have prompted investigations, including the Madlanga Commission and a now-concluded parliamentary ad hoc committee on SAPS corruption and political meddling.
