The Ntuzuma Regional Court in Durban in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) sentenced 26-year-old Vuyani Lindokuhle Ngubane to life imprisonment plus 30 years following his conviction on charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The offences were committed in July 2023 at a tavern in the Inanda area in the North of Dbn in KZN.

NPA Regional Spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said that on the day of the incident, Ngubane was socialising at a tavern with friends while brandishing a firearm.

“He discharged the firearm outside the premises, injuring his hand in the process. He then re-entered the tavern seeking something to wipe the blood from his hand. At that moment, the deceased, Xolani Mkhize, entered the tavern.

“Ngubane removed Mkhize’s cap and attempted to wipe his own blood onto it, this led to an argument between the two men. Mkhize exited the tavern, but Ngubane, accompanied by a friend, followed him outside. Ngubane’s accomplice struck Mkhize on the head with a beer bottle, while Ngubane robbed him of his cellphone and fatally shot him. The two fled the scene,” she said.

Kara said Ngubane was arrested two months later in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

She said during the trial, Prosecutor Kaystree Ramsamujh led the testimonies of two eyewitnesses and presented CCTV footage capturing the incident.

“In aggravation of sentence, Ramsamujh submitted a Victim Impact Statement (VIS) compiled by Mkhize’s mother and facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Princess Mlangeni.

“In the statement, she described the devastating impact of her son’s death on the family. Mkhize was employed and the family’s breadwinner. She further expressed the family’s pain at Ngubane’s lack of remorse.

“Ngubane was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, and 15 years’ imprisonment for unlawful possession of a firearm. The court ordered that he serve an effective sentence of life imprisonment and declared him unfit to possess a firearm,” she said.

The 42-year-old parolee and convicted serial murder accused, Ayanda Dayi, was sentenced to four life imprisonment terms by the Wynberg Regional Court in the Western Cape on Tuesday for the murder of four men in separate incidents.

This sentencing follows the hard work and commitment of the investigating officers, Detective Lieutenant Colonel Adrian Pretorius and Detective Warrant Officer Bradley Davids.

Dayi will be remembered to be part of the gang that robbed a Sasko Bread Truck in Delt in May 2024.

According to police reports, in addition to the four life sentences, Dayi was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, three separate 15-year imprisonment terms for illegal possession of firearms, four years’ imprisonment for illegal possession of ammunition, and 10 years’ imprisonment for attempted murder.

The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

One of the murder incidents that shocked the nation was captured in a social media video clip. In the footage, three Sasko bread employees were seen travelling in a truck to deliver bread to a spaza shop in Delft along Symphony Way on 16 May 2024.

The accused and his co-accused were shown shooting at the victims, despite the victims appearing to surrender.

Earlier that same year, Dayi committed a double murder in Dunoon, where he shot and killed two men before hijacking their vehicle.

Dayi had previously been convicted of rape and sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment in August 2002. He was on parole when he committed the four murder offences.

The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General (Adv) Thembisile Patekile, commended the investigating and prosecution teams for ensuring that justice was served.

The Polokwane High Court in Limpopo has sentenced traditional healer, Hlologelo Klaas Mogotlane (36) after he pleaded guilty to the brutal murder of Dr Malekutu Johannes Mehlape on 28 December 2023 at the deceased’s home in Mankweng Zone 1, outside Polokwane.

Mehlape was a Circuit Manager at the Limpopo Department of Education.

Limpopo National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Spokesperson Mashudu Malabi said that Mehlape’s death was orchestrated by his daughter Mologadi Magdeline Mehlape who has since been sentenced to life imprisonment.

“The murder follows claims made by traditional healer, Mogotlane who alleged that Mehlape was responsible for her mother’s death through the use of “muthi”.

“When attempts to retaliate using traditional means failed, Mehlape enlisted the help of various family members to hire a contract killer, agreeing to pay R200,000 for the murder,” she said.

She further said that on Monday, Mogotlane pleaded guilty and the court sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment for murder and 13 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

“He accepted his responsibility for his role in the offences to cause the death of Dr Mehlape. Three others accused, Tshepo Gabriel Ranoto (34), Mahlodi Melida Mathole (34) and Michael Sello Molongoane (42) appeared alongside Mogotlane,” she said.

The trial for these accused has been separated and postponed to 02-13 November 2026 in the Polokwane High Court.

The NPA welcomed the conviction and life sentence, viewing it as a clear affirmation of the justice system’s resolve to hold perpetrators of serious and violent crimes accountable.

It further said the outcome underscores the NPA’s unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and securing justice for victims and their families.

The suspect’s surrender came as three other accused appeared in court on Monday morning. Dikeledi Mphela, Gotseone Machidi and McClaren Mushwana stood before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on charges linked to Satlat’s death.

The trio face charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. In a notable move, all three abandoned their bail applications and indicated they would apply for Legal Aid representation.

The case has been postponed to 23 February 2026 as investigations continue and prosecutors prepare for the next stage of proceedings.

Outrage grows over safety of e-hailing drivers

Satlat’s death has sent ripples through the e-hailing industry and beyond, sparking renewed debate over driver safety and the risks built into the job. For many drivers, each trip can feel like a gamble, especially at night or in areas known for hijackings and robberies.

The circumstances of the killing have fuelled calls for stronger protections, tighter verification systems, and more urgent action to prevent drivers from becoming easy targets. While investigations move through the courts, the wider question remains painfully clear: how many warnings will it take before the system becomes safer for the people behind the wheel?

Family raises funds to repatriate Satlat’s body

As the legal process unfolds, Satlat’s family is dealing with the kind of grief that leaves little room for anything else. They are now raising funds to repatriate his body to Nigeria, a difficult and costly process made even heavier by the suddenness of his death.

Family members say Satlat’s father was hospitalised after identifying his son’s body, a heartbreaking detail that underscores the depth of trauma this tragedy has caused.

Satlat was described by those who knew him as someone with a future he was working toward. His death has not only cut short a young life, but has also left a family trying to piece itself together while navigating a foreign country’s legal process from afar.

What happens next

The fourth suspect is expected to appear in court on Tuesday on charges of carjacking and murder. Meanwhile, the case involving the three accused returns to court on 23 February 2026.

Police say investigations remain ongoing as authorities work to finalise the docket and bring clarity, and accountability to a case that has shaken Pretoria and reignited fears across the e-hailing community.

Three accused have abandoned their bail application in the brutal murder case of 23 year old e hailing driver Isaac Satlat.

Dikeledi Tears Mphela, Goitsione Machidi and McClaren Mushwana appeared before the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court facing charges of premeditated murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

It is alleged that the suspects ordered an e hailing ride using a number not registered in their names. When the vehicle arrived, the driver was allegedly forced to stop and later strangled inside his own car. His cellphone and vehicle were taken. The vehicle was later recovered.

The shocking incident was reportedly captured by a camera installed inside the vehicle and the footage circulated widely on social media.

The matter has been postponed to 23 February 2026 for further investigations.

The National Prosecuting Authority says it remains committed to ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice.

The officers, aged between 31 and 39, were arrested on allegations including theft and defeating the ends of justice.

The officers in question are Falaza Shirinda, Lesiba Tha, Siyabonga Yika, Cecilia Ngubeni, Kevin Seisa and Rofhiwa Neloheni.

According to IPID, the incident dates back to March 2024 when the officers reportedly stopped the businessman for a traffic violation.

After confirming his documents, they allegedly went to his home, searched it, and took R120 000 in cash.

The businessman has previously shared that he believes he was targeted because he is a foreign national.

“He described feeling traumatised by the incident and said it took months for him to recover emotionally. He said he simply wants justice, not only for himself, but for others who may have experienced similar treatment,’l” said Magagula.

Magagula told the Commission that despite IPID making recommendations to EMPD in 2024, no internal disciplinary action has been taken against the officers.

“The EMPD officials indicated they were waiting for video evidence before proceeding internally. The memory stick containing footage had been handed over, but technical assistance was needed to download and access the material,” he said.

Meanwhile, IPID is reportedly investigating thousands of cases nationally, with allegations of extortion by law enforcement becoming an increasing concern.

The six officers were arrested by IPID on 5 March 2025 and appeared in Boksburg Magustrate’s Cpurt where they were charged with robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Each officer was granted bail of R3000.

Magagula further said that despute submitting a referral to EMPD in October 2024 , the department has yet to initiate any disciplinary actiin agaunst the officers.
