The South African Police Service has launched an investigation following the fatal shooting of an Ethiopian foreign national inside a shop in the Johannesburg CBD.

The incident occurred at the corner of Jeppe and Von Wielligh streets, a busy area in the inner city.

According to initial reports, the victim was shot and killed at close range. Emergency services responded to the scene, where the individual was declared dead.

This marks the second reported shooting involving an Ethiopian national in the CBD within a short period. A similar incident was reported earlier at the corner of Jeppe and Delvers streets, raising concerns about a possible pattern.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear at this stage. However, early indications suggest the possibility of a targeted killing.

Police investigations are ongoing, and authorities have not yet confirmed any arrests.

A brutal attack has left one teenager dead and two others injured in Umlazi in the South of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) after a group of men allegedly demanded a protection fee from pupils who were selling sweets.

According to unconfirmed reports, three pupils from Menzi High School were selling sweets along Maponya Road in N Section on Friday, when they were approached by a group of men.

The suspects allegedly demanded a protection fee. When the pupils refused to pay, the situation turned violent.

Knives were drawn. A 19-year-old pupil was stabbed and died at the scene. Two other pupils, aged 17 and 19, sustained stab wounds and were injured. They have been rushed to hospital for treatment.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda has confirmed that a case of murder and two counts of attempted murder have been opened. A manhunt is currently underway as police search for the suspects.

The victims were reportedly selling sweets to earn some income, a common practice among many school pupils in the area. The attack has highlighted growing concerns over extortion and gang-related violence targeting young people.

The Umlazi community has been left in shock and outrage, with many calling for swift justice and greater protection for schoolchildren.

Police urge anyone with information about the suspects to contact Umlazi SAPS immediately.

Families of hostages and their supporters are urging the Israeli government to secure a deal that would bring all captives home. Israel, however, is standing firm, insisting that all 50 hostages held in Gaza must be released, raising doubts about a new 60-day ceasefire proposal recently presented by mediators.

The proposal, which Hamas has agreed to, would see the release of some hostages while negotiations continue toward a permanent ceasefire. Reports suggest that only around 20 of the 50 hostages are believed to still be alive after nearly two years of conflict.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not publicly commented on the latest proposal, but he has said that Hamas is under “immense pressure” due to ongoing Israeli military actions. Israel’s cabinet is expected to approve plans for a full occupation of Gaza City later this week, despite thousands of residents already fleeing the area.

Hamas has expressed willingness to accept the ceasefire plan, which involves releasing a portion of hostages immediately while continuing talks for a long-term agreement. Under the proposal, Israel would also release hundreds of Palestinian detainees and adjust its military presence in Gaza.

An official from Israel’s Prime Minister’s office emphasized that Israel’s stance remains unchanged: all hostages must be freed as part of any deal to end the war. While not outright rejecting the plan, Israel appears likely to continue negotiations on the terms.

Meanwhile, public pressure is mounting within Israel. Families of hostages and many citizens are calling for a deal to end the conflict and bring their loved ones home. Some government officials, however, insist that a partial deal is unacceptable and warn against giving Hamas any breathing space.

The war, which began in October 2023 following a Hamas-led attack, has left thousands dead and displaced millions. Most of Gaza’s population has been forced to move repeatedly, homes have been destroyed, and critical infrastructure, including healthcare and water systems, is in collapse.

The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) has dismissed reports suggesting it ordered motorists not to use their private vehicles or transport their families. The council described the claims as false and misleading.

The denial follows viral posts and videos alleging that taxi drivers were stopping and harassing private motorists, with some reports claiming parents and teachers were being prevented from driving children to school.

Santaco spokesperson Mmatshikhidi Rebecca Phala clarified that the council had never issued such instructions. She emphasized that only law enforcement authorities have the legal right to regulate transport in the country and urged the public to report any incidents of harassment directly to the police.

Santaco in KwaZulu-Natal also reiterated that the organization is not a law enforcement agency and has no authority to impose rules on private vehicles. Instead, its role is to oversee taxi operations, including minibuses, metered taxis, and scholar transport, within the framework of the constitution and existing laws.

The controversy comes amid heightened tensions in the transport sector following the tragic death of an e-hailing driver, who was attacked and killed at Maponya Mall last week.
