Isaac had been responding to what seemed like a routine ride request in Pretoria West on February 11 when he was brutally attacked. Later, his stolen car and his lifeless body were discovered abandoned in Atteridgeville, leaving his family and community in shock.

The horrific incident was caught on video and quickly spread across social media, igniting widespread anger and calls for justice. The accused—Dikeledi Tears Phela, Gositsiane Machidi, and McClaren Mushwana—chose not to seek bail and will stay in custody as the case unfolds.

They’re facing serious charges of premeditated murder and aggravated robbery tied to this senseless attack.

Outside the courthouse, fellow e-hailing drivers and supporters gathered in a peaceful protest, urging authorities to do more to protect those working on ride-sharing apps. Chants of “Justice for Isaac” echoed through the air as the hearing began.

Isaac had borrowed the car to earn some extra cash while completing his internship in automotive mechanical engineering in Centurion, which was set to wrap up soon. Tragically, he would have celebrated his birthday on March 12.

Hundreds of Muslims and their supporters took to the streets of Kano on Saturday to push back against recent comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who accused Nigeria of allowing a Christian genocide and even hinted at possible American military intervention.

Videos from the rally show crowds carrying placards—some with Trump’s picture—while chanting messages condemning the remarks. Many protesters said the claims were misleading and capable of worsening religious tensions in the country.

“There is no Christian genocide in Nigeria,” several signs read, while most chants were delivered passionately in Hausa.

The peaceful march began at the Kano Central Mosque and continued to Sabon Gari, closely monitored by security agents who ensured order throughout.

Trump’s comments came after he placed Nigeria on America’s “Countries of Particular Concern” list, alleging that the government had failed to address severe attacks on Christians. His message, which included instructions for the Pentagon to prepare possible intervention plans, has sparked anger at home and concern among international observers.

Nigeria’s government swiftly dismissed the allegations, stressing that insecurity affects citizens across different religions and regions. Information Minister Mohammed Idris called Trump’s statement misguided, while the Foreign Affairs Ministry insisted the claims did not reflect Nigeria’s complex security challenges.

Several religious and political figures have since reacted. On Friday, Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God urged President Bola Tinubu to engage diplomatically with Washington and seek time to show progress against terrorism, warning that confrontation could harm ordinary Nigerians.

Global powers have also weighed in. China and Russia both rejected the idea of foreign military action in Nigeria, calling instead for dialogue and respect for the country’s sovereignty. The African Union echoed these concerns, cautioning that external interference could further destabilise the region.

Nigeria continues to battle multiple security issues—from insurgency in the northeast to banditry in the northwest and communal clashes in the Middle Belt. Rights groups have reported thousands of deaths in recent years, affecting both Christians and Muslims.

Markets remain closed as merchants worry about threats of violence. “We were told the market would be burned, so we had no choice but to close,” said Hayatou, a local trader. Another vendor, Mouhamadou Blama, lamented the loss of income, saying, “There are no buyers, no clients — our products are going bad.”

Fruit seller Mahamout expressed similar frustration as his goods began to rot due to the market closure. “These are our products — how do we survive if we can’t sell them?” he asked.

Merchants say the absence of security forces has worsened the situation, leaving thousands of shops unprotected. The impact has also reached schools, where attendance has dropped sharply. “We’re supposed to be 50 in class, but only 20 showed up,” said student Gringa Dieudonné.

The protest marks the third phase of Bakary’s campaign against the government in Yaoundé, signaling a growing standoff between the opposition and President Paul Biya’s administration.

Supporters gathered outside the courthouse demanding his release, with activist Omoyele Sowore leading the demonstration. Security forces responded by firing tear gas and sealing off major roads, causing widespread traffic disruptions. Witnesses reported several arrests, including members of Kanu’s legal team and relatives, although police have not released an official statement.

Detained since 2021, Kanu remains one of Nigeria’s most divisive figures—seen by many in the southeast as a symbol of resistance, while authorities view him as a threat to national unity. His prolonged legal battle continues to deepen political and ethnic tensions across the country.

In Garoua, northern Cameroon, residents are standing guard outside the home of opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary after both he and President Paul Biya claimed victory in the October 12 presidential election. Official results are not expected for another week, but tensions are already running high.

Supporters of Tchiroma, including young men and women, have organized round-the-clock shifts to protect him from possible arrest. Armed with sticks and wooden slats, they believe Biya’s government might move against the opposition figure after he challenged the election results.

“We are tired,” said Garoua resident Moussa Iya Mohaman Adama. “We studied, but there are no jobs. Cameroon needs change — from north to south, east to west. We don’t want war, but it’s time for Biya to hand power to the people.”

Witnesses say riot police and gendarmes surrounded Tchiroma’s home shortly after election day, sparking clashes with residents who refused to leave the area. Since then, Tchiroma has been confined to his home, delivering statements to the public from within.

Despite the heavy security presence, many in Garoua remain defiant. “It was the people who decided to protect him,” said a relative, Hassana Tchiroma. “They are standing up for what they believe is right.”

The city remains tense as Cameroonians await the official results of an election that could reshape the nation’s political future after 43 years under President Biya.

Residents from the Bottlebrush informal settlement in Chatsworth took to the streets early this morning to demand access to water. The protest occurred at the corner of Chatsglen on-ramp to Higginson Highway eastbound and the entrance to the Shallcross link road, where roads were blocked and motorists were forced to use alternative routes to get to work.

Shallcross community activist, Judah Ben Hur, explains how residents’ frustration grows when they are not heard.

“Water is a need; it is the bare essential human right that people have. But there needs to be fairness in how this happens. The reason people are getting to the streets is because they don’t have an opportunity to present their frustrations to the municipality. Our ward councillors are not engaging with the people, and there’s no opportunity for their voices to be heard. That frustration ends up on the street,” he said.

Metro Police Captain Logan Pillay, who oversaw the protest, explained that illegal connections have worsened the crisis, and the area has been struggling for months.

“The informal settlement tapped into water lines illegally, supplying over 500 homes. These connections leak, wasting water, and the reservoirs run dry. The municipality cut off the illegal supply to stabilise water for the formal areas,” said Pillay.

This protest brings to light the urgent need for better communication between residents and the municipality to prevent frustrations from entering the streets.

Mvelase was shot and his vehicle set alight outside Maponya Mall on Wednesday night, a crime that has sparked widespread anger and grief. The attack forced the closure of the popular mall after residents took to the streets in protest, blocking nearby roads to express their outrage.

Authorities believe the killing may be linked to ongoing tensions between taxi operators and e-hailing drivers, a conflict that has flared repeatedly in recent years.

Mvelase’s death has reignited calls for stronger safety measures in the e-hailing industry, with many warning that drivers remain highly vulnerable to violent attacks.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has come out strongly to deny any involvement in the recent nationwide protests, saying claims that he funded the unrest are lies means to mislead the public.

In a televised interview, Gachagua questioned why, if the state had credible intelligence about his alleged involvement, no action was taken. “If they knew goons were paid by me or anyone else, why weren’t they arrested?” he asked, dismissing the accusations as baseless.

He also brushed off suggestions that the protests were part of a coup attempt. “If those protesters were under my control, they’d either be in jail or dead,” he said bluntly, adding that the chaos would have been handled far differently if it were truly orchestrated by him.

His comments were in response to statements made by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who claimed the protests were an attempted overthrow of government institutions like Parliament and State House.

Gachagua further challenged the government’s response, wondering how unarmed protesters allegedly overran a police station. “If there was solid intelligence, why didn’t they act before things got out of hand?” he asked. He criticized Murkomen’s statements, urging him to stop treating Kenyans as fools.

He also demanded answers as to why known looters weren’t arrested during the protest, adding that if someone had truly sent them, they should be in custody to aid investigations.

President William Ruto also weighed in, condemning the unrest as acts of anarchy disguised as protests. He directed law enforcement agencies to launch immediate investigations and vowed that those behind the violence would face justice.

The president also warned politicians not to exploit the frustrations of young people for personal gain. “Those who want to lead must do so through the ballot, not by destroying what others have built,” he said firmly.

As tensions remain high, political blame games continue while the country awaits clarity on who truly sparked the unrest—and why.

The streets of downtown Los Angeles were filled with tension for the third night in a row, as protests against immigration raids continued to escalate. What began as peaceful demonstrations quickly turned chaotic. Police declared the area an “unlawful assembly” late into the night, ordering crowds to disperse.

The unrest has led to several troubling scenes: cars set ablaze, reports of looting, and journalists caught in the crossfire. A British photojournalist was seriously injured and required surgery after being hit by a sponge bullet. An Australian reporter was also shot with a non-lethal round while covering the protest live on the scene.

President Donald Trump weighed in from Washington, describing the situation in LA as dire. “Things look really bad in LA,” he said. “Bring in the troops!” His call for military involvement comes despite objections from California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, who has opposed the deployment of the National Guard.

Reporting from the city, noted that while Sunday night was slightly calmer than the violent scenes of the previous day, the tension in the air remained thick. Meanwhile, Reporters captured a frightening moment on camera—footage of a car speeding through a group of protesters, sending people running for their lives.

As the city braces for what may come next, many Angelenos are left hoping for peace and accountability amid the chaos.

Under the warm Durban sun, angry voices rose from the city’s iconic beachfront — not in celebration, but in frustration. Holding up signs that read, “Give us the services we pay for!”, a group of determined residents marched along the promenade on Saturday, demanding what they say has been denied for far too long: dignity through service delivery.

The protest, led by the eThekwini Ratepayers Protest Movement (ERPM) and supported by the North Beach Ratepayers Association (NBRA), shone a spotlight on the growing discontent with poor municipal services, unexplained tariff hikes, and a lack of transparency from city officials.

“This city is falling apart,” said Asad Gaffar, ERPM’s chairperson. “We’re being asked to pay more for less — and we’re done being quiet about it.”

Many residents feel they’re being billed for services that either don’t exist or are poorly delivered. Some described waiting months, even years, for basic issues like potholes, broken playgrounds, and unattended street rubble to be fixed — only to watch unnecessary projects get fast-tracked elsewhere.

NBRA chairperson Rookaya Vawda passionately urged fellow residents to join the fight. “We can’t wait anymore. If we don’t speak up now, nothing will change,” she said. “It’s not just beachfront residents — people in the suburbs are struggling too. We’re tired of chasing departments that don’t respond.”

She described how the NBRA had even created a community WhatsApp group to track complaints — requiring residents to submit reference numbers so they could personally follow up and escalate unresolved issues.

“There’s a total breakdown in communication,” Vawda explained. “We’re not asking for luxury — just the basics we already pay for.”

Frustration also grew over questionable decisions on public works. Vawda pointed out how a quiet road was recently resurfaced despite being in good condition, while main roads remain riddled with cracks. Nearby parks, she said, are poorly maintained with broken playgrounds and limited access. “Who’s making these decisions? Who’s getting these contracts? We want to know.”

Adding to the sense of injustice is the growing list of levies and fees. Flat owners are charged R40 monthly for the Community Schemes Ombud Service — an agency meant to mediate disputes in residential buildings. But many say it’s failing them.

On the beachfront, the protest caught the attention of passersby like Ntsiki Majola, a father out with his children. After learning about the protest, he stopped to express his support. “We’re fed up,” he said. “I pay my bills, I follow the rules, and yet we get nothing in return. Now we hear about plans for a rehab center in Illovo, and no one even consulted us. What about our safety?”

Gaffar called for an immediate halt to all proposed tariff hikes until there’s proof of improved services. “We need full disclosure — where has our money gone? And what’s the plan for future spending?”

In response to public pressure, the municipality has revised its proposed 2025/26 tariff increases, slightly reducing some rates. But for many residents, the changes are too small — and the trust is already broken.

Revised Tariff Highlights:

Property Rates: 6.5% cut to 5.9%

Water: Residential increase dropped from 15% to 13%

Sanitation: Down from 13% to 11%

Refuse: 9.9% to 9%

Electricity: A steep 12.72% increase remains, as guided by NERSA

For now, the message from Durban’s beachfront is loud and clear: residents are no longer staying silent. They’re paying attention — and they’re demanding answers.
