In Dnipro, a missile carrying cluster munitions struck a high-rise residential building, causing widespread damage and civilian casualties.

Ukraine’s military reported that Russia launched hundreds of drones and missiles in the attack, while Moscow claimed its strikes were aimed at military-industrial sites.

The conflict also spilled across borders. Russian authorities said four people were killed in the Samara region during a Ukrainian drone strike that targeted an oil refinery. Ukraine also confirmed hitting another refinery in the neighboring Saratov region.

Cross-border drone raids have become a defining feature of the war, with Kyiv focusing on Russian oil and industrial facilities to weaken Moscow’s war effort. At the same time, Russia has stepped up its aerial attacks, hitting deeper into Ukrainian cities.

The strike came just days before President Zelensky is expected to meet U.S. President Donald Trump during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where the war is set to dominate discussions.

Tensions are also mounting within NATO, after Estonia, Poland, and Romania reported recent violations of their airspace by Russian jets and drones. The incidents have fueled fears of a broader escalation beyond Ukraine’s borders.

As Ukraine counted the losses, it also struck back. Officials said a drone attack damaged a pumping station on Russia’s Druzhba oil pipeline.

For many in Kyiv, the sight of their government’s headquarters burning was more than another headline. It was a chilling reminder that nowhere — not even the city’s fortified centre — is truly safe.

Trump recently suggested that Ukraine might need to cede some territory in order to bring the conflict—sparked by Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022—to an end. Zelensky, however, stressed that such a move is unacceptable and would reward aggression.

Despite Trump’s tougher rhetoric towards Russia in recent months, there has been little concrete action to match his words. His earlier deadline for Moscow to agree to a ceasefire passed without consequence.

On the ground, both soldiers and civilians express deep fatigue from the constant fighting and relentless missile and drone attacks. While the longing for peace is strong, there is no appetite for a settlement that ignores Ukraine’s voice or sacrifices its sovereignty.

With the Alaska meeting approaching, it remains unclear whether Zelensky will be invited to participate in any way. For now, Ukraine’s position is unshakable: peace is possible—but not at the cost of its land.
