TZANEEN VILLAGES HIT BY COPPER CABLE THEFT

More than 12 villages have been hit by vandalism of electric pole and copper cables in Tzaneen , Limpopo Province.

According to Eskom, two lanes ( Lenyenye Mashiloane 11KV and Risenga Juliesburg 22KV) will undergo an unplanned power outage in order to repair the severe damages.

Copper cable theft has become a trending lucrative business in the area, and only the vulnerable villages are targeted.

Last month, villages around Nwamitwa were forced to brave the heatwave without electricity for 11 days.

Eskom statement has indicated that an estimated time of restoration is not yet available as electricians are busy assessing the damage.

The power utility snail pace has angered the residents and local business owners.

“It’s been three days without electricity and water. Our Christmas meat is rotten, and we are forced to use rain water for our day to day routines, ” said a resident

Those who have deeper pockets opted to purchase their own copper cables and join other lines in order to access electricity

” Life without electricity is difficult. We tried to engage our neighbors about budgeting for copper cables. But, they turned the offer done. We had to take this path alone to sustain our family, ” said a female resident

A car panel beater that was established in 2021 is facing a financial loss for the first time this festive season.

” Our hands are tight up. We can not operate any of our machines due to a lack of electricity. ” said a mechanic engineer

The panel beater also services government vehicles within Mopani District.

Meanwhile, Eskom has urged all customers in the affected areas to treat all electrical connections as live during this period.

Madagascar Erupts in Mass Protests as Calls Grow for President Rajoelina to Step Down

For the fifth straight day, streets across Madagascar have filled with protesters demanding the resignation of President Andry Rajoelina. What began as anger over crippling water shortages and rolling power blackouts has swelled into one of the largest waves of unrest the country has seen in years.

Demonstrators, many of them young people, chanted “Rajoelina Out” while waving flags and banners in the capital Antananarivo and other cities. Security forces tried to maintain control as rallies spread from neighborhood streets to major towns across the island.

The protests have already turned deadly, with at least 22 lives lost and over 100 people injured in clashes, though the government disputes those figures. The anger has only deepened since Rajoelina dissolved his government earlier this week, a move that protesters say does nothing to address their demands.

Many in the movement want sweeping political change, including the resignation of the president, the dissolution of key state institutions, and fresh leadership free from corruption. Opposition parties have backed the demonstrations, refusing to join any new government as long as Rajoelina remains in power.

Rajoelina, who first seized power in a 2009 coup before later winning elections, secured a third term in 2023 amid allegations of fraud. Now, his leadership faces its toughest test yet, as a generation of frustrated youth and angry citizens push for change.

In the midst of the turmoil, voices from the church and civil society are urging peace and dialogue to prevent the unrest from escalating further. But for now, the chants demanding Rajoelina’s resignation continue to echo through the streets of Madagascar.

Death Toll Rises as South Korea Battles Floods and Landslides

At least 14 lives have been lost in South Korea following days of relentless rainfall that triggered devastating floods and landslides across the country. Rescue efforts are still underway, and the number of casualties could grow, with 12 people still unaccounted for.

Nearly 10,000 people have been forced to leave their homes since the downpour began midweek. Many communities have been left in darkness, as more than 41,000 households experienced temporary power outages.

Though the rain has eased in the hardest-hit southern and central regions, further storms are forecast for the capital, Seoul, and surrounding northern areas. The widespread damage includes submerged roads, destroyed buildings, and significant losses in farmland and livestock.

In Sancheong County, six people were confirmed dead, and seven others are missing. Other fatalities have been reported in mountainous areas north of Seoul, as well as in parts of the west and north of the country.

Authorities have issued landslide warnings in multiple regions, and a coordinated emergency response involving several agencies was activated over the weekend to support recovery efforts.

The situation remains critical, with communities bracing for additional rainfall as they begin to assess the full extent of the damage.
