The battle lines have been drawn for the soul of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) between the Inkatha Freedom Party and the Umkhonto Wesizwe Party(MKP).

The MKP want the Premier of KZN Thani Ntuli removed as the leader of the province through the motion of the confidence which will take place on 15 December at the KZN Legislature.

On Monday, during the IFP NEC meeting, the party threw their weight behind Ntuli accusing the MKP of wanting to destabilising the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU).

In a statement released by the IFP on Monday, the party said: “The IFP reaffirms its full confidence in the Premier of KZN Thami Ntuli, ahead of the baseless motion of no confidence brought by the uMkhonto WeSizwe Party (MKP). This motion represents a reckless attempt to destabilise the province at a time when KZN requires focused governance and continuity.

Under Premier Ntuli’s leadership, KwaZulu-Natal has made notable strides, including securing R100 billion in investment—signifying investor confidence in the province’s stability and direction. If the MKP truly believes it has legitimate concerns, it should submit them to the appropriate oversight bodies rather than resorting to political theatrics. Moreover, the MKP must prioritise pressing issues of its own making—especially the safe return of South Africans misled into travelling to Russia to engage in a conflict they neither understood nor consented to,” the statement read.

Responding to the IFP statement, MKP National Spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said the party is making a clear call to all members, supporters and progressive forces across the province to unite behind the Vote of No Confidence against Premier Thami Ntuli and the DA-led government.

“This province cannot continue under a coalition whose political DNA is rooted in protecting privilege, preserving elite control and maintaining the economic structures that keep the African majority on the margins of their own land.

“From the beginning, this coalition was never a government of the people, it was a political experiment engineered to stabilise minority interests at the expense of the suffering black working class. Its purpose has been to manage the crisis of poverty, instead of transforming the conditions that produce it. That is why unemployment grows, services collapse and inequality widens while those who claim to govern, busy themselves with defending inherited power,” he said.

Ndhlela said that the Vote of No Confidence is a confrontation between two visions, one that protects the old order and another that seeks to dismantle it so that the resources of Kwa-Zulu Natal serve the people who built this province with their labour and sacrifice.

“We call upon all progressive Members of the Legislature to recognise that neutrality in a moment of injustice is a luxury of the powerful. The people have spoken through their lived experience, through their poverty, through their exclusion. They want a government that understands their struggle, not one that treats their suffering as background noise to elite negotiations.

“The MK Party is prepared to work with any force committed to breaking the hold of neoliberal governance in KwaZulu Natal. We are ready to build a government rooted in the will of the people, accountable to the people and guided by the clear understanding that true political power belongs to those who produce and sustain society, not those who exploit it,” he said.

Motshekga’s outburst comes after Lobese raised concernes about the underfunding of the South African Defence Force (SANDF) which he described as something that was done purposely.

Lobese made these remarks while addressing the Chief of the Navy’s Prestige Charity Ball at St George’s Hotel in Tshwane over the weekend.

“For our Cabinet to approve the reduction of the SANDF work force or strength is actually nothing far from telling us to implement a defence version of what General Mkhwanazi has disclosed in the Madlanga Commission with regard to the closure of the Political Killing Task Team,” Lobese said.

He further said: “The unpatriotic and what appears to be a sellout posture of defunding the SA Navy and SANDF in general, leaves me with a question of whether the people behind what I would like to call ‘nonsense’ are not busy with a mission to privatise the SA Navy and the SANDF.

“We are required to produce Annual Performance Plans and Defence Reviews one after another, and what saddens me is knowing very well that this requirement is just a mind game as these will not be resourced,” said Lobese.

Responding to the remarks made by Lobese, Motshekga said that the incident was the unfortunate outburst.

“The Department of Defence has noted with concern comments made by the Chief of the South African Navy, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese, a senior member of the Military Command, during the SA Navy Gala Dinner held over the past weekend,” the statement reads.

The statement further read that

Lobese made an unfortunate statement that cast aspersions at the leadership of government.

“The Minister regards these remarks not only as inappropriate, disingenuous and unfortunate on a matter he is fully aware that is receiving attention at all levels, starting from within the department to Parliament. The Minister will be taking appropriate steps to deal with this unfortunate outburst worst still from a senior person at his level.

The views expressed at the event do not reflect the official position of the Department,” the statement said.

On Monday, the African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Fikile Mbalula lambasted Lobese for speaking out on the matters of the defence ministry publicly.

The visit came at a challenging moment for South Africa’s international relations. Just a day earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States would boycott the upcoming G20 summit in South Africa. His decision also applied to Vice President JD Vance, who had been expected to attend in his place.

Trump explained the boycott on social media, accusing South Africa of allowing abuses against white Afrikaner farmers. His administration has repeated these claims for years and recently suggested that most of America’s limited refugee intake would be reserved for white South Africans.

South Africa has rejected the allegations as baseless. President Ramaphosa has said he personally informed Trump that the claims are “completely false.” Government officials expressed disbelief at the accusations, pointing out that white South Africans, on average, continue to enjoy far higher living standards than Black citizens more than 30 years after apartheid ended. This sharp contrast highlights the deep disconnect fuelling the diplomatic tension.

Despite the political backdrop, Ramaphosa’s meeting with the Pope was framed as an opportunity to promote dialogue, understanding, and continued partnership.

The summit is set to take place in Johannesburg from November 22 to 23. Trump had previously questioned South Africa’s place in the G20 and suggested he might send Vice-President JD Vance in his place. But his latest statement makes it clear that no American representative will attend.

Calling the decision a stand against alleged abuses, Trump said it was “a total disgrace” for the G20 to be hosted in South Africa. He claimed that members of the Afrikaner community were being killed and that their land was being taken illegally. He added that the United States would only participate again when he hosts the 2026 G20 meeting in Miami.

Since returning to office earlier this year, Trump has repeatedly accused South Africa of carrying out discrimination and even “genocide” against the white minority. In one confrontation with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Trump attempted to present what he said was evidence of mass killings. However, the material he used turned out to be unrelated video footage from another country.

South African authorities have firmly rejected the allegations, describing them as false and unsupported. Officials maintain that claims of a white genocide have been widely disproven and do not reflect the reality on the ground.

The U.S. withdrawal from the summit adds fresh tension to an already strained relationship and raises questions about diplomatic cooperation among G20 members. As preparations for the global meeting continue, South Africa has yet to respond formally to the U.S. decision.
