According to police, two officers were processing the suspect in the cells when he allegedly overpowered them, assaulted them, and took the keys to the main door. When backup arrived, the suspect allegedly grabbed a firearm from one of the responding officers, opened fire, and locked officers inside the cells.

KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the suspect attempted to hold six police officers hostage during the standoff. Specialist police units were then deployed to the scene to contain the situation.

“The hostage situation continued for several minutes before tactical police teams managed to penetrate the cells and, during the operation, the 22-year-old suspect was shot and fatally wounded,” Netshiunda said. Two police officers, a male and a female, sustained minor injuries during the scuffle. Police officers who were held hostage will be temporarily withdrawn from active duty to undergo psychological debriefing.

Hawks members from Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation in KwaZulu Natal (KZN) arrested Kwanele Khatheni (27) for murder of Sergeant Sanele Dlamini (37) who was fatally shot at Inanda last year.

Khatheni was apprehended in his hideout place on Wednesday and appeared in Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

KZN Hawks Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo said on 8 April 2025, Sergeant Dlamini who was attached to the Presidential Protection Unit was off duty driving his private motor vehicle along Mafukuzela Road at Inanda Newtown.

“It is alleged that he stopped opposite the service station and went to the tuck shop, whilst waiting to purchase he was accosted by the accused. Sgt Dlamini managed to drew his service pistol and fired several shots towards the accused. One of the accused also shot at Sergeant Dlamini and robbed him of his service pistol. He was taken to hospital in his private motor vehicle and was declared dead on arrival,” he said.

Mhlongo said that a case of murder was reported at Inanda police station and Hawks members attended the crime scene.

“Information was received that one of the accused was taken to the local clinic and police proceeded to the clinic where he was placed under arrest. He was introduced as Ntuthuko Nzama aged 27. Nzama appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrate Court few days after the incident and was remanded in custody since then.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that Nzama was taken to hospital by Khatheni who introduced himself as Siphon, hence he was arrested on Wednesday. He briefly appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court today and was remanded in custody,” said Mhlongo.

Mhlongo said the case was postponed to 20 March 2026 for formal bail application and Nzama will re-appear in the same court on 18 March 2026 for trial.

Real name Sakhengaye Mncwango from Eshowe in the North of KZN, Sakhengaye was allegedly shot and killed in Melmoth after he was declared wanted for the murder of his girlfriend in an incident that is said to have taken place in Mthunzini area on Thursday.

According to the police report, it is alleged that Sakhengaye committed this gruesome murder after he was released from jail.

Sakhemgaye served 15-years in jail after he had killed his other girlfriend.

KZN SAPS Spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident.

“A 35-year-old suspect who was wanted for several cases including murder was fatally shot in a shootout with police at Nkwaleni in Eshowe on Thursday.

“Police received intelligence that the suspect they were looking for was travelling towards Vryheid and police intercepted the vehicle just after Umhlathuze Bridge. A shootout ensued between the suspect and police and during the shootout, the suspect was shot and fatally wounded. No police officer was injured during the shootout,”he said.
