]]> South African police have arrested a 43-year-old Zimbabwean national after making a shocking discovery during a stop-and-search operation in Mpumalanga.
According to SAPS, officers intercepted a white Chevrolet bakkie near Waterval Boven after receiving intelligence about suspicious cross-border activity. During the search, police allegedly uncovered 582 passports hidden inside a concealed compartment, including passports belonging to Zimbabwean, Mozambican, and Malawian nationals.
What stunned investigators even more was the amount of cash found inside some of the passports and inside the vehicle. Police confirmed that more than R147,000 in cash was seized during the operation.
Authorities believe the passports were allegedly being transported to be illegally stamped at the border, allowing undocumented individuals to bypass immigration regulations and remain in South Africa unlawfully.
The suspect is now facing serious charges, including:
  • Fraud
  • Money laundering
  • Contravention of the Immigration Act
Police have also confiscated the vehicle as investigations continue, and officials say more arrests could still follow as they dig deeper into the alleged passport-smuggling network.
The arrest has once again sparked intense debate across South Africa over border security, corruption at ports of entry, illegal immigration syndicates, and document fraud operations operating across Southern Africa.
