]]> Communities in South Africa’s Eastern Cape are reeling after the death toll from the recent floods rose to 86. The disaster, triggered by a powerful winter storm on Monday, has left a trail of destruction, especially around the city of Mthatha.

 

President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the flood-stricken region on Friday and called for a national day of mourning to honour those who lost their lives.

 

The storm caused a river to overflow, sweeping away homes and makeshift shelters in the largely rural province. Emergency teams are still conducting search and rescue missions, as several people remain unaccounted for.

 

Efforts continue across the province to find survivors and offer aid to displaced families.
