The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has noted with concern the circulation of content on a social media platform X, purporting to represent the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), in which statements contain serious threats directed at a Prosecutor involved in a matter before the kuGompo Regional Court in the Eastern Cape on Friday.

NPA Spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said they strongly condemnes any form of intimidation or threats against its prosecutors.

“These officials serve the public by representing the State and are constitutionally mandated to execute their duties without fear, favour, or prejudice.

Threats against prosecutors whether perceived as credible or not must be treated with the utmost seriousness and reported to the relevant law enforcement authrities for investigation,” he said.

Kganyago said such conduct undermines the rule of law and poses a real risk to the safety and lives of those entrusted with upholding justice.

“This concern is heightened in the Eastern Cape, where three prosecutors have tragically been killed over the past two years, underscoring the very real dangers faced by members of the prosecuting authority.

“The NPA remains resolute in its commitment to safeguard its prosecutors and ensure that they are able to perform their functions independently, safely, and effectively. Prosecutors are officers of court and a threat to a prosecutor will attract consequences and anyone must desist from whatever form of threat against them,” he said.

In terms of the order, various assets registered in the names of the accused have been restrained, including multiple high-value immovable properties across Gauteng, some valued at over R3 million as well as movable assets such as a Mercedes-Benz A45S AMG, Aston Martin DB9, Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI, Toyota Fortuner, Jaguar E-Pace, Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, and other vehicles. The total estimated value of the restrained assets is approximately R43.9 million.

Yesterday, 14 April 2024, the sheriffs of the court, representatives of the AFU, members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) and the appointed auctioneers visited the various addresses in Gauteng to execute the provisional restraint order. In accordance with the provisional restraint order, the auctioneers took possession of various motor vehicles to be kept in storage pending the finalisation of the criminal case and possible confiscation application.

According to the evidence, an international Israeli syndicate, operated the call centers from which they enticed unsuspecting members of the public, in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United States of America and various other countries abroad, to invest in non-existing products with promises of returns on their investments.

The call center agents employed by the syndicate would contact members of the public who reacted to false advertisements that were posted on the internet in what is commonly referred to as “click bait”. Evidence shows that the call center agents targeted vulnerable individuals, groomed them and knowingly misrepresented investment opportunities and returns.

National Prosecuting Authority Spokesperson

Kaizer Kganyago said the criminal case remains before the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court and has been postponed to 4 June 2026 for further investigation.

The AFU aims to ensure that benefits unlawfully derived from criminal acts are extracted and recovered in accordance with the objectives of the POCA. The effective partnership and collaborative efforts between the DPCI, the NPA’s Specialised Commercial Crime Unit (SCCU), and AFU have resulted in the restraint of assets linked to this multibillion-rand cybercrime syndicate. This outcome underscores the impact of coordinated action by government agencies working together in the pursuit of justice.

Fugitive Malawian pastor and businessman Shepherd Bushiri is once again in a legal battle to stop the auction of his luxury private jet, valued at around R50 million, which South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is seeking to seize and sell as part of ongoing asset recovery efforts.

The Bombardier Challenger 604 has been grounded at Lanseria Airport since 2020, when Bushiri and his wife Mary fled South Africa while out on bail.

The NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit previously secured a court order allowing the aircraft to be sold, with proceeds intended to help recover funds linked to fraud and money-laundering allegations.

Bushiri, who faces multiple charges including fraud and contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, is opposing the auction, arguing that authorities have not proven the jet was purchased using proceeds of crime.

His legal team maintains the aircraft was legitimately acquired and is now challenging both ownership claims and the legality of the forfeiture process.

He has also accused South African authorities of being politically motivated, insisting he is being unfairly targeted.

Despite his claims, prosecutors continue to pursue the seizure of luxury assets linked to his estate as part of a broader effort to recover alleged criminal proceeds.

The matter remains before the courts, and no official auction date has been announced.

The National Prosecuting Authority has secured a major victory after the Eastern Cape High Court in KuGompo City, formerly known as East London, ordered the final forfeiture of assets worth approximately R800 000 linked to a shocking pension fraud case.

The seized assets include a flat in Quigney, a Chevrolet Utility vehicle, as well as furniture and household appliances, all believed to have been purchased using stolen funds.

The order, granted on 17 February 2026, was issued in favour of the National Director of Public Prosecutions under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, following a preservation order obtained in October 2025.

According to NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali, the court found that the assets were proceeds of unlawful activities, including fraud and theft.

The case centres around a 65 year old man who was allegedly deceived by a woman known as “Mamavuma”, who posed as a traditional healer.

The victim initially approached her for assistance and later disclosed that he was struggling to access his pension benefits.

Mamavuma allegedly promised to help “unblock” the funds using traditional methods and performed rituals without requesting payment at first.

However, after the complainant received a pension payout of more than R6 million in February 2025, the situation took a devastating turn.

He was told the money needed to be “cleansed” before use and, following her instructions, withdrew and handed over a staggering R4.4 million in cash.

Mamavuma later claimed additional processes were needed, including a trip to Musina for protective medicine, before disappearing completely.

Investigations revealed that she transferred over R1 million to an associate, who then used the funds to acquire the forfeited assets and invest in local bed and breakfast businesses.

Both suspects are believed to have fled the country.

The Asset Forfeiture Unit successfully traced the stolen money and linked it directly to the assets, leading to their seizure.

Authorities confirmed that the assets will be auctioned, with proceeds intended to compensate the victim where possible.

The Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Barry Madolo, praised the outcome, saying it sends a strong message that criminals will not be allowed to benefit from illegal activities, even if they attempt to evade justice.

This case highlights the growing concern over fraud schemes targeting vulnerable individuals and the NPA’s continued efforts to recover stolen funds.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has closed the Ad Hoc Committee hearings with a dramatic and confrontational appearance that has left Parliament under pressure.

After months of intense testimony, Mkhwanazi did not hold back.

Instead of simply concluding his evidence, he turned his focus directly on committee members, questioning their leadership, approach and handling of the investigation.

He made it clear that the information he presented was not personal, but the result of a collective investigation, reinforcing the weight of the allegations before Parliament.

But the most striking moment came when he moved to correct the record.

Mkhwanazi requested permission to withdraw one allegation after revealing that a critical error had occurred during the extraction of data from Vusi Matlala’s devices.

According to his testimony, a case of mistaken identity led investigators to link financial transactions to the wrong individual.

The person, who had a number similar to former Police Minister Bheki Cele stored under the name Ndosi, allegedly received money from Matlala.

Believing it was legitimate, the man reportedly spent the money before communication with Matlala suddenly stopped.

Mkhwanazi confirmed that the individual would not face charges.

Despite this correction, he stood firm on all other allegations made earlier in the inquiry, refusing to retract any further claims.

The hearing intensified when a handwritten letter from a prisoner linked to Matlala was introduced.

The letter allegedly implicated high profile figures, including legal representatives connected to suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, senior officials within the National Prosecuting Authority and other unnamed SAPS leadership figures.

Mkhwanazi went further, making bold claims about internal power struggles within law enforcement.

He suggested that if Mchunu had remained in office, key cases linked to Matlala could have collapsed and senior leadership positions within SAPS could have been reshaped.

He openly labelled senior officials within the police as untrustworthy and accused others of dishonesty, deepening the sense of division at the highest levels of law enforcement.

The tension spilled into open confrontation during exchanges with Members of Parliament, including a heated moment with MP Fadiel Adams.

But the proceedings continued.

In a powerful closing message, Mkhwanazi urged the committee to go further and seize the devices and full administrative records of Minister Mchunu as part of the investigation.

He also outlined what he described as the three critical drivers of crime in South Africa, pointing to cash in transit heists, tender systems and border control failures.

As the hearings officially come to an end, Committee Chairperson Soviet Lekganyane confirmed that the findings will soon be released to the public.

Now the country waits.

Because what started as a parliamentary inquiry has now exposed deep fractures within South Africa’s law enforcement leadership.

And the final report could have serious consequences for some of the most powerful figures in the system.

The recovery was secured by the NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit following years of legal battles involving multiple preservation orders and a final forfeiture order granted on 31 October 2024.

The ruling effectively vested the property in the state, paving the way for its return to the municipality.

The land, which had originally been earmarked for critical community development, including low cost housing, public schools and essential amenities, has now been officially handed back.

National Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Andy Mothibi presided over the handover on Wednesday, marking a significant victory in the fight against corruption and the recovery of public assets.

Mothibi issued a strong warning to those involved in corruption and the abuse of public trust.

“We want this occasion to serve as a warning to those who seek to enrich themselves through corruption and the abuse of public trust. Illicitly acquired assets will not be enjoyed in peace. They will be pursued. They will be preserved. They will be forfeited,” he said.

The case is not yet fully closed.

Authorities confirmed that the criminal prosecution linked to the matter is in the process of being reinstated, signalling that those responsible may still face legal consequences.

The development underscores the NPA’s dual strategy of not only recovering stolen assets but also ensuring that individuals behind corruption are held criminally accountable.

The recovery is expected to restore much needed development opportunities for the people of Mahikeng, where the land can now be redirected towards its intended public use.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has officially confirmed that corruption charges against former ANC spokesperson and Cabinet minister Zizi Kodwa will be reinstated, alongside those against businessman Jehan Mackay.

The decision follows a formal review by the office of the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), overturning the earlier withdrawal of charges and placing the high-profile case back on track.

At the centre of the case are allegations that Kodwa received kickbacks amounting to approximately R1.6 million from Mackay, a former executive at technology firm EOH, between 2015 and 2016.

Prosecutors allege that the payments — including luxury accommodation — were intended to influence the awarding of lucrative government contracts.

The matter was initially enrolled in June 2024, but took a controversial turn in November 2024 when the South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andrew Chauke, withdrew the charges.

That decision sparked concern among investigators, prompting the Hawks to successfully request a review by then NDPP Advocate Shamila Batohi.

In one of her final decisions before leaving office, Batohi overturned the withdrawal and directed that the matter be reinstated.

According to the NPA, Kodwa and Mackay’s legal representatives were formally notified of this decision in a letter dated 29 January 2026.

NPA spokesperson Abram Mohlatlole said the authority was compelled to respond to claims suggesting that information about the reinstatement had been leaked before the accused were informed.

“The NPA would like to set the record straight,” the statement read.

The authority confirmed that letters were sent to the legal representatives of both Kodwa and Mackay, informing them that the decision to withdraw charges had been set aside and that prosecution would proceed.

The NPA further rejected any claims of a leak, stating that such allegations are “devoid of any truth”.

National Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Andy Mothibi also assured the public that no leaks would be tolerated.

The Special Commercial Crime Unit is currently finalising logistical arrangements to re-enrol the matter in court.

The development reignites a long-standing legal battle that continues to cast a shadow over Kodwa’s political career.

KEY POINTS

1 NPA reinstates corruption charges against Zizi Kodwa and Jehan Mackay

2 Allegations involve R1.6 million in kickbacks linked to EOH contracts

3 Charges were previously withdrawn in November 2024

4 Hawks pushed for review, Batohi overturned decision

5 Lawyers informed on 29 January 2026

6 NDPP denies any leak

7 Case to be re-enrolled

The Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Gauteng sentenced the former Steinhoff at Work, Group Audit Executive Hein Odejdaal (67) to four years direct imprisonment or fine of R2 million.

Odendaal was further sentenced to two years imprisonment wholly suspended for a period of five years, on condition that he is not convicted of contravention of section 34 (1) of the Prevention and Combatting of Corrupt Activities Act (PRECCA) committed during the period of suspension and that he subject himself to one year correctional supervision in terms of section 276(1) (h) of the Criminal Procedure Act, 51 of 1977.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Lumka Mahanjana said Odendaal was convicted and sentenced after entering into a plea and sentence agreement with the State in terms of section 105A of the Criminal Procedure Act.

“In his capacity as the Group Audit Executive, Odendaal was negligent in that he ought to have suspected that other employees within Steinhoff group committed fraud therefore did not report to the police. Where on 21 November 2016 Iwan Peter Schelbert ( while acting on instructions from the then Chief Financial Officer, Andries Benjamin La Grange, he generated a fraudulent invoice to TG Sources SARL, a company based in Martigny, Switzerland.

“Following the generation of the invoice, Stephanus Johannes Grobler and others created supporting documentation and caused payments to be affected to falsely represent that the invoice reflected a legitimate transaction between Steinhoff at Work and TG Sources SARL. This fraudulent scheme resulted in the inflation of Steinhoff’s financial statements by more than R376 million,” she said.

The NPA said this conviction and sentence, which marks the fourth conviction secured in the Steinhoff matter.

“This outcome demonstrates the commitment of the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigations (DPCI)and the NPA to holding perpetrators accountable in one of the largest and most complex corporate fraud cases in South Africa’s history. The investigation and prosecution of this matter required extensive collaboration and technical expertise due to its scale and complexity. It is to be noted that the NPA takes these nature of cases serious. Each case is treated according to its merits. The plea bargains do not militate against the seriousness of these offences,” she said.

The National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Advocate Andy Mothibi said: “These outcomes should demonstrate to the public that NPA will continue to prosecute all cases whether in public or private sector without fear , favour or prejudice.”

The case against the remaining accused, Stephanus Johannes Grobler (64), has been postponed to 14 May 2026 for further proceedings.

It has been brought to the attention of the NPA that certain individuals are circulating messages while falsely claiming to be the NDPP. In some instances, these individuals are also using a profile picture of Mothibi.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Kaizer Kganyaho said Mothibi was taken with the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, to mislead members of the public and create the impression that communication is legitimate.

“The NPA strongly condemns these acts of impersonation and warns members of the public to exercise caution when receiving messages or calls from individuals claiming to be Adv. Mothibi. The NDPP does not communicate with members of the public through private or unfamiliar numbers regarding official matters.

“Such conduct is unlawful and may constitute offences, including fraud and impersonation. The NPA calls on those responsible for these actions to immediately desist from impersonating the NDPP and misusing his image.

Members of the public who receive suspicious messages or calls from individuals claiming to be Adv. Mothibi are urged not to engage and to report the matter to their nearest law enforcement authorities,” he said.

Kganyago said the NPA remains committed to protecting the integrity of its leadership and safeguarding the public from fraudulent conduct carried out in the name of its officials.

The man known as the Sasko Truck robbery kingpin must be sentenced to five life imprisonment.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) argued that the High Court of South Africa, Western Cape (WC) Division, sentenced murderer, Ayanda Dayi, to five life sentences and seventy-five years direct imprisonment when it hands down a sentence next week following his conviction for a spree of gruesome crimes he committed.

The circuit court sitting at the Wynberg Regional Court convicted Dayi on four counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, a count of theft, three counts of illegal possession of firearms and three counts of illegal possession of ammunition.

WC NPA Spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila said Dayi’s conviction follows a successful prosecution that was meticulously put together by Senior State Advocate Esna Erasmus in collaboration with investigating officer Lieutenant Colonel Pretorius, who even used facial recognition technology to link the accused to these crimes.

This case sent shock waves throughout the country after footage of three men in a Sasko bread truck was shot at point-blank range while delivering bread at a spaza shop in Symphony Way, Delft on the morning of 16 May 2024.

Dayi’s spate of gruesome crimes started on Usasaza Street, Du Noon, on the evening of 24 January 2024, when he and an unknown man fatally shot Eric Yaphi and Elvis Thembelani Cwethiso and robbed them of the vehicle he was driving.

“Police started their investigation and collected four cartridge casings at the scene. On 31 January 2024, police found the vehicle parked at Gushindoda informal settlement, Delft.

The vehicle was locked, and they requested a towing service. When they returned, they found the accused with his stepson in the vehicle. The doors, bonnet and boot were open, and a firearm was on the front passenger seat. The accused escaped after throwing sand in the face of a pursuing police officer,” he said.

Ntabazalila said forensic investigation found that one of the bullets fired during the murders of Yaphi and Cwethiso was fired from the firearm seized from the vehicle.

“The other three came from a different firearm. Dyani’s fingerprints were also found on the vehicle,” he said.

Erasmus also led evidence that on the morning of 16 May 2024, Aphiwe Nogaya and his two colleagues, Xolani Gaji and Cebisile Mfundiso, delivered bread at a spaza shop at the corner of Delft Main Road and Symphony Way.

“He and one of the deceased received money from the shop owner and returned to the truck. They handed the money to the driver, who started counting it as he had to drop it in the safe behind the front seats.

“The accused appeared in front of the truck, pointing a firearm at them. He then moved to the driver’s side and opened the driver’s door. At the same time, another man, now known as Soso, appeared at the passenger side with a firearm. They grabbed the money and a cellular phone. They also searched for firearms, whereafter they brazenly opened fire at the three occupants in the truck. A minimum of 8 shots from the two firearms were fired. Although injured, Nogaya survived the attack, was hospitalised and had to undergo surgery,” said Ntabazalila.

He said surveillance footage, which formed part of the evidence, was played in court and handed in as evidence together with a still photograph.

“On 05 June 2024, Nogaya pointed out the accused in a photo parade and in court as the accused who stood in front of the truck and then went to the driver’s side,” he said.

Ntabazalila said that Erasmus also called Warrant Officer Keyser, a Forensic Analyst who specialises in facial identification, stationed at the South African Police Services Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), confirmed through morphological analysis that the accused was the person who stood in front of the bread truck as depicted on the stills and surveillance footage.
