The Mooinooi police in the North West are investigating a case of murder and kidnapping following an alleged incident in which a 35-year-old Lesotho national was killed after being set alight.

According to police report, on Thursday night, police received a complaint that a person had been murdered at the Khlamtwna informal settlement.

“Police attended the scene and met a woman who identified herself as the deceased’s girlfriend. She indicated that she had received information that her boyfriend had been murdered and left in nearby bushes. Upon arrival at the scene, police noticed flames, indicating that something was burning.

“A naked male body was found lying on the ground with both hands tied behind his back, and the body had been set alight. During preliminary investigations, the deceased’s girlfriend indicated that the victim had allegedly been forcefully apprehended by a group of unknown community members after being accused of stealing their cattle,” read the report.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Ryno Naidoo, condemned the incident and warned community members against taking the law into their own hands.

He urged residents to report suspected criminal activities to the police so that such matters can be dealt with through proper legal processes.

Police investigations are continuing, and no arrests have been made at this stage.

In a slick early-morning operation on Tuesday, 3 March 2026, police swooped on seven suspects in Klerksdorp and stopped them from blowing up an ATM in the city’s bustling CBD.

The men, aged between 30 and 58, were caught red-handed while preparing for the attack. Acting on solid tip-off, officers moved in fast and made the arrests before the group could carry out their plan.

During the raid, police seized a rifle, a pistol, and a stash of explosives. They also recovered a suspected stolen vehicle. The suspects now face serious charges: possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, conspiracy to commit crime, and handling a stolen motor vehicle. They are expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court very soon.

In his State of the Province Address (SOPA) today in the Provincial Legislature, Mokgotsi Lazarus, Premier of the North West, once again failed to offer sustainable solutions to the province’s pressing problems.

It is no secret that under ANC rule, North West continues to experience serious systemic problems due to corruption and maladministration on all levels of government. The fact that nine of the eleven provincial departments received qualified audit reports speaks for itself.

The state of the larger economic centres in North West – Matlosana, JB Marks, Rustenburg and Madibeng – paints a clear picture of North West residents’ plight. It is a picture of persistent decline, decay, unemployment and disinvestment due to corruption and maladministration.

None of these problems will be resolved without the decisive eradication of the culture of corruption and self-enrichment still thriving in ANC ranks.

Most notably, the Premier made no mention of the grand promises of job creation he made in last year’s SOPA.

Madibeng residents are still waiting on the promised 20 000 job opportunities that were supposed to be created by the Mekgareng Smart City development in 2025. Not a single sod has been turned.

Likewise, Matlosana residents are also still waiting on the 10 000 job opportunities that investments by China Africa Precious Metals and Harmony were supposed to create.

Mokgotsi did indicate that the unemployment rate in North West decreased. He failed to mention, however, that 50% of the province remains unemployed. He also did not point out that the drop can largely be attributed to temporary (seasonal) employment in the agricultural sector and limited duration contracts in the construction industry.

The same can be said about employment by the government’s Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), which is more of a social support programme than sustainable job creation driving economic growth.

It is clear that the ANC lacks the political will, or the ability, to tackle the main problems undermining North West residents’ quality of life head-on.

The Freedom Front Plus demands that corruption-free and professional governance, which prioritises sustainable growth, be restored in North West.

North West businessman Brown Mogotsi has levelled explosive claims against KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, accusing him of failing to disclose a private meeting with alleged underworld figure Vusimusi Matlala, widely known as “Cat” Matlala.

Mogotsi made these allegations during his appearance at the Adhoc Committee which is investigating infiltration of SAPS , fraud and corruption.

This was the second time Mokgotsi made these allegations which he initially made during his testimony before the Madlanga Commission.

According to Mogotsi, the controversy dates back to a media briefing last July, where Mkhwanazi accused him of acting as a go-between for senior politicians and Matlala to derail police investigations.

It further emerged that Mokgotsi had ose ties with the suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and had participated in helping the CR17 campaign that saw President Cyril Ramaphosa emerging as the winner in that ANC elective conference.

As if that was not enough, the Ad Hoc Committee further heard of how a murder case against Mokgotsi was dropped without any reasons and how former Police Ministet Bheki Cele lied about knowing Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala way before 2024.

Brown Mogotsi told the Ad Hoc Committee he doesn’t believe Cele didn’t know Cat Matlala until 2024, saying the 2018 Crime Intelligence report with a “Big” picture of Matlala clearly labeled him as “John Wick” linked to Boko Haram in Mamelodi

Mogotsi told the Ad Hoc Committee today that Cele should have recognized businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala years earlier, based on a 2018 Crime Intelligence report labeling Matlala as “John Wick” linked to the Boko Haram gang in Mamelodi.

Mogotsi said the report, housed in the Crime Intelligence Analysis department, included a large photograph of Matlala, his identification details, and criminal history.

“At that time, it was perceived or construed as I said Cat Matlala was John Wick, or is John Wick. I saw the report in 2018 and it is still there,” he told the commission.

He added that the report should have been visible to Cele during his tenure.

“When Bheki Cele said he only met Cat once or twice, my contention was he should have seen Cat Matlala from that report. The picture was so big, and it was part of a presentation. That report exists in the Crime Intelligence Analysis,” Mogotsi said.

Cele has testified that he first met Matlala in December 2024 and denied receiving payments or having a close friendship. Matlala, in previous testimony, alleged paying Cele R500,000 in cash as a facilitation fee related to seized firearms.

Cele rejected these claims, maintaining his contact was limited.

Mogotsi’s testimony today adds to a series of conflicting accounts regarding Cele’s knowledge of Matlala, the “John Wick” vigilante moniker, and potential financial dealings.

Mogotsi further claimed Matlala personally told him from prison that he had travelled to uMhlanga in Dbn to meet Mkhwanazi and had given him “something,” which Mogotsi interpreted as money.

“I followed Matlala to Durban at the time, believing the “important person” he was meeting could have been former police minister Bheki Cele. Only later, I did learn the meeting was allegedly with Mkhwanazi,” he said.

February is a month of love and Singer and Actor Brian Temba will usher lovers into Valentine’s Day with a new single titled Rato Laka which will be released on Friday.

Temba’s Rato Laka which is written in Sotho will not be his first vernacular song as he has also relwased a Zulu written song called Zanele.

“I mainly sing in English, which can sometimes create distance, but this time I recorded a song in Sesotho the first one I’ve written in the language. Previously, I recorded an isiZulu song, Zanele, which became a major success. That experience confirmed that audiences respond when they hear themselves reflected in the music,” he said.

Explaining further the idea of Rato Laka which translates to My Love, Temba said:

“I’ve written countless love songs, but had never explored love in Sesotho. I wanted to understand how love sounds, feels and breathes in my mother tongue. Singing in Sesotho unlocked something incredibly powerful. It carries emotion differently. Love, in its truest form, is patient, enduring and intentional,” he said.

The tour kicks off in Johannesburg, followed by the North West, Bloemfontein and Limpopo all on February14.

Chaos erupted in Boitekong in the early hours of this Friday morning when more than 500 informal structures were demolished by Rustenburg Local Municipality in the North West assisted by private security and police, leaving families homeless.

Residents say they were woken by bulldozers at around 3am as shacks built on municipal land opposite Boitekong Police Station were flattened.

The demolition follows allegations that Ward 40 councillor, Joseph Qobeka, illegally sold stands on municipal land to desperate residents, sparking anger and shock within the community.

One of the affected residents, Thabang Mokua, told a Sechaba Times reporter that he paid R1 500 for a stand, believing the transaction was legitimate because it was allegedly facilitated by a sitting councillor.

It is further alleged that the councillor may have pocketed more than R700 000 from the illegal sale of the stands.

Community members say no criminal case has yet been opened, as some of the councillor’s alleged associates promised victims that their money would be refunded.

They are also appealing to Qobeka to come forward and explain how refunds will be settled.

Aaccording to the local reporter attempts to obtain comment from Qobeka were unsuccessful at the time of publication.

Award winning Gospel sensation Bucy Radebe has explained why she decided to leave the African National Congress (ANC) 114 Anniversary Celebration that was held in the rural Murulung Stadium in the North West on Saturday.

The “Uzuy’gcin’impilo Yami” hitmaker , decided not to perform at the ANC event after she was made to wait for eight hours before she takes to the stage.

Explaining her decision to leave, Bucy said that the ANC officials further threatened not to book her in future including in government event because she decided to leave without performing on Saturday.

“I arrived at the venue at 08:00 am, I was told I will perform after interfaith but another artist did while I was backstage. Around 3 pm, my MD was told I will perform after cutting of cake and I watched how another artist was ushered while I was backstage.

“I decided to leave and my team was told that I will never be booked even on government functions, which I’m ok with. No booking made me,I started to be booked after God discovered me. I apologise to everyone who wished to see me but I was hurt by the treatment,” she wrote.

The post has since been taken down.

It was followed by another where Bucy said she wished that ANC Secretary General (SG) Fikile Mbalula and the ANC’s Womens League had shown the same love they showed her during Umanyano that was held in Rustenburg.

“The ANC Women’s League and Mr Fikile Mbalula gave me so much love on 8th January after I decided to pass and greet them unannounced as they held their Umanyano service in Rustenburg. Wish same thing could have happened on Saturday,” she wrote.

Residents of Shanono Local Government Area in Kano State are living in fear following repeated attacks by armed bandits suspected to be crossing from neighbouring Katsina State.

During a press briefing on Thursday, the leader of Farin-Ruwa community, Alhaji Yahaya Bagobiri, appealed to both the federal and state governments for urgent intervention before the situation worsens.

“We are appealing to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to come to our rescue. Many of our people have started fleeing their homes to Kano metropolis and nearby towns due to incessant attacks,” he said.

Bagobiri explained that bandits recently launched fresh assaults on Tuesday and Wednesday, leaving several people injured and rustling dozens of cattle.

Shanono, located about 85 kilometres from Kano city, shares borders with Kankiya, Musawa, and Danja in Katsina State — all known hotspots for bandit activity.

Although Kano has largely been spared from the widespread banditry affecting other parts of the North-West, the recent incursions have raised fears that the crisis is now spreading into the state.

Bagobiri identified the most affected communities as Farin-Ruwa, Kuraku, Gorantuse, Saure, and Shadu.

“Just two days ago, the bandits attacked again, wounded some residents, and carted away more than 40 cows, besides other animals and properties,” he said.

Another resident, who asked not to be named, said the attacks have been ongoing for the past few months. “They have invaded our area about seven or eight times now,” he revealed. “The losses are enormous — we can’t even quantify the value of the livestock and property we’ve lost.”

He added that during the latest attacks, the gunmen stole several herds of cattle estimated at between 800 and 1,000. “This time, they didn’t abduct anyone, but they shot some people. In previous attacks, they used to shoot people at our local market in Farin-Ruwa,” he said.

The resident noted that while the motive of the attackers remains unclear, locals believe their wealth in livestock might have attracted the bandits.

“In the past, we only heard of such attacks from afar, but now they have become our daily reality,” he lamented.

There’s growing speculation that the ANC’s upcoming special NEC meeting may turn its attention to the turmoil crippling municipalities in the North West. This follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent visit to the province, where he was confronted with the full extent of local government dysfunction.

According to insiders, the provincial executive committee (PEC) has been repeatedly interfering in the day-to-day running of municipalities. Even more worrying, struggling municipal managers are being shielded from accountability — protected by the very structures meant to uphold good governance.

The result is a culture of political protection that leaves ordinary people paying the price. Communities are left without reliable water, electricity, or waste collection, while underperforming officials are safeguarded for political convenience. Public trust in government continues to erode.

If the ANC’s NEC is truly committed to renewal, it cannot allow provincial structures to keep undermining municipalities. Bold and corrective action is needed — not only to stabilize governance in the North West, but also to send a clear message countrywide: incompetence and corruption will no longer be tolerated.

The ANC now stands at a crossroads. It can confront factional protection and restore credibility, or risk further alienating the citizens whose daily lives depend on accountable, effective local government.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has wrapped up his visit to the North West province, where he met with the provincial executive council to strengthen cooperation between national and provincial government.

The engagement, held under the theme “A Nation that Works for All”, forms part of a series of nationwide meetings aimed at improving service delivery and aligning priorities of the 7th Administration.

Discussions focused on urgent infrastructure needs, including road repairs, reliable water systems, and boosting energy supply to support the province’s industrial growth. The meeting also highlighted improvements in governance, while acknowledging the persistent challenges facing local municipalities.

Ramaphosa urged leaders to put citizens first, warning that neglecting basic services amounts to violating people’s rights.

“We were all elected to serve the people, not ourselves. No one should go more than a day without running water while there’s silence from municipal offices about when it will be restored,” he said.

The President also encouraged stronger public-private partnerships to fast-track development projects.

This gathering follows similar sessions in other provinces, with the final two—Free State and Western Cape—expected to be completed by the end of the financial year.
