Deputy President Paul Mashatile has paid an emotional tribute to former North West Premier Kaobitsa Abel “Bushy” Maape, describing him as a revolutionary, freedom fighter, Robben Island prisoner, and servant of the people.
Mashatile delivered the eulogy at Maape’s funeral at Huhudi Stadium in Vryburg, North West, on Saturday, 23 May 2026.
He said South Africa had gathered to honour a loyal son of the African soil whose life was marked by sacrifice, discipline, and service.
“We unite in sorrow to bid farewell to Comrade Kaobitsa Abel ‘Bushy’ Maape, a leader, Robben Island prisoner, loyal ANC cadre, and son of the soil,” Mashatile said.
Maape, who served as Premier of the North West Province from 2021 to 2024, was remembered for his role in the liberation struggle, his contribution to organised labour, and his service in government.
Mashatile said Maape’s life reflected endurance and sacrifice during the fight against apartheid.
According to the Deputy President, Maape was a teacher and principal during the day, while also operating as an underground activist during the apartheid years.
He said Maape helped recruit activists under dangerous conditions and contributed to the formation of the Kgalagadi Politico-Military Machinery.
Mashatile also highlighted Maape’s role in the establishment of the General and Allied Workers’ Union, where he helped organise exploited farm and general workers.
He said Maape also contributed to the United Democratic Front during the period when the ANC was banned.
For his activism, Maape was imprisoned on Robben Island.
Mashatile said the apartheid regime believed prison would silence leaders like Maape, but Robben Island instead became a school of political consciousness, discipline, courage, and leadership.
He placed Maape among the generation of struggle figures who sacrificed their freedom for a democratic South Africa.
“Among those courageous revolutionaries stood Comrade Bushy Maape. His voice, once silenced by prison walls, became a beacon of hope,” Mashatile said.
The Deputy President said Maape’s struggle was never about wealth or recognition, but about restoring dignity to the poor and marginalised.
He said Maape believed political freedom would remain incomplete without economic justice.
According to Mashatile, Maape wanted liberation to mean jobs for the unemployed, land for the dispossessed, education for the youth, healthcare for the vulnerable, housing for the homeless, and opportunity for ordinary people.
Mashatile said even as Premier, Maape remained focused on rural communities, traditional leadership, youth development, agriculture, and infrastructure investment.
He said Maape understood the urgent service delivery challenges facing communities in the North West, including water shortages, youth unemployment, deteriorating infrastructure, and the need for an efficient government.
Mashatile said Maape believed government must be visible, responsive, and accountable to the people.
He added that Maape recognised the importance of traditional leadership in community development, social cohesion, cultural identity, and rural development.
The Deputy President said the North West Province had significant economic potential through mineral wealth, agriculture, tourism, and skilled labour, but Maape believed those benefits had to uplift communities and not only enrich a few.
Mashatile also used the funeral address to condemn the killing of community activist Thato Molosankwe from Lomanyaneng Village in Mahikeng.
He described the killing as a barbaric and senseless act of violence.
“This senseless act of violence is an attack not only on one individual but also on the values of humanity, justice, democracy, and community activism for which many freedom fighters, including Comrade Bushy Maape, dedicated their lives,” Mashatile said.
He extended condolences to the Molosankwe family, the Lomanyaneng community, and all those affected by the killing.
Mashatile said no society could prosper when violence, intimidation, criminality, and lawlessness were allowed to undermine public confidence.
He said the government remained committed to ensuring that law enforcement agencies pursue justice and hold perpetrators accountable.
He also called on communities, traditional leaders, civil society, faith-based organisations, and all sectors of society to work together to defeat crime and rebuild respect for life and human dignity.
Mashatile said the greatest tribute to leaders such as Maape would be to build communities founded on unity, safety, compassion, and justice.
He told the Maape family that their loss was also the nation’s loss.
“Thank you for sharing this son of the soil with us. His legacy is written not in ink, but in sacrifice, discipline, and service,” Mashatile said.
He said Maape would be remembered as a freedom fighter, disciplined ANC member, former Premier of the North West, and a man faithful to the cause of the people until his final days.
“Hamba kahle, Mkhonto. Tsela Tshweu, Comrade Bushy Maape,” Mashatile said.

NPA RECOVERS R144 MILLION IN STOLEN MUNICIPAL LAND IN MAHIKENG CRACKDOWNThe National Prosecuting Authority has recovered land worth R144 million that was unlawfully taken from the Mahikeng Local Municipality in a major corruption crackdown.

The recovery was secured by the NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit following years of legal battles involving multiple preservation orders and a final forfeiture order granted on 31 October 2024.

The ruling effectively vested the property in the state, paving the way for its return to the municipality.

The land, which had originally been earmarked for critical community development, including low cost housing, public schools and essential amenities, has now been officially handed back.

National Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Andy Mothibi presided over the handover on Wednesday, marking a significant victory in the fight against corruption and the recovery of public assets.

Mothibi issued a strong warning to those involved in corruption and the abuse of public trust.

“We want this occasion to serve as a warning to those who seek to enrich themselves through corruption and the abuse of public trust. Illicitly acquired assets will not be enjoyed in peace. They will be pursued. They will be preserved. They will be forfeited,” he said.

The case is not yet fully closed.

Authorities confirmed that the criminal prosecution linked to the matter is in the process of being reinstated, signalling that those responsible may still face legal consequences.

The development underscores the NPA’s dual strategy of not only recovering stolen assets but also ensuring that individuals behind corruption are held criminally accountable.

The recovery is expected to restore much needed development opportunities for the people of Mahikeng, where the land can now be redirected towards its intended public use.

Police have launched an investigation following a Cash In Transit (CIT) Robbery that occurred at approximately 16:40 on Monday, in Old Geelhout Park, Rustenburg in the North West.

It is alleged that security personnel were travelling in a cash-in-transit vehicle along Kremetart Street when a Toyota Fortuner travelling in the opposite direction collided with the driver’s side door of the cash vehicle.

The incident was also captured by onlokkers who then posted it on social media on Monday.

During the recording, the 15 armed men are seen patiently taking the money from the cash van and loading it to the double cab which later they leave in different cars.

The vehicle was forced to stop and was subsequently blocked by a Toyota Hilux (Legend) double cab bakkie.

Approximately 15 armed suspects allegedly overpowered the security officers and instructed them to unlock the doors.

The guards were removed from the vehicle, dragged a short distance away from the cash vehicle and made to lie face down on the ground.

One armed guard was disarmed while the suspects gained access to the vehicle and stole an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspects allegedly set alight both the cash-in-transit vehicle and the Toyota Fortuner used in the collision.

Several shots were fired during the incident. The suspects fled the scene, and no injuries were reported.

Investigations are ongoing and no arrests have been made at this stage.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Major General Dr Ryno Naidoo, urged members of the public to report serious crimes immediately and cautioned that suspects involved in such crimes are dangerous and should not be confronted.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is requested to contact their nearest police station, Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit information anonymously via the MySAPS App on their smartphone.

The Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) in the North West on Sunday applauded the 25 years imprisonment handed down to Molefi Benjamin Ramoholokoane (61) by the Potchefstroom Regional Court for the murder of his intimate partner Maria Masego Fumba (37) committed on the 11 February 2025.

The civil society led organisation promoting the Charter of Positive Values expressed hope that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide.

Convenor of the MRM Provincial Interim Committee, Pastor Lesiba Kgwele remarked that the conviction which was realized within a short period will contribute towards restoring public confidence in the criminal justice system.

“We trust that the Fumba family will find closure in the knowledge that justice was done and commend the investigation officer, Constable Pholoso Mosenogi of the Ikageng Detectives and the prosecution team on the successful conviction,” highlighted Pastor Kgwele.

Kgwele urged men who are experiencing pressure in their relationships and personal lives to seek professional counselling instead of taking matters into their own hands.

He said that Ramoholokoane was driven by jealousy, insecurity as a well as control to commit a heinous and ghastly act as he suspected that his girlfriend was cheating on him with a 77-year-old neighbour whom he was reportedly cooking a meal.

“He abrogated his responsibility as to protect his live-in partner whom he claimed to have loved when he resorted to senseless violence, ending her life in a gruesome manner,” underscored Kgwele.

Evidence presented in court revealed that Ramoholokoane had stabbed the deceased with knife multiple times with two knives until she succumbed on the scene.

Police were called to the scene and arrested him on the same day. He remained in police custody until the conclusion of the trial.

Police in South Africa’s North West Province are investigating a disturbing murder in Mosiane View village, Mahikeng, where a 25-year-old man allegedly killed his 48-year-old mother using a shovel on Saturday morning.

A video circulating on social media shows the son attacking his mother in a brutal assault. According to police, the young man later died after being struck by a bullet fired by a neighbour who was trying to stop the attack.

The motive behind the incident remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing. North West Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Patrick Asaneng condemned the act as “sadistic, gruesome, and senseless,” suggesting it may be linked to possible drug abuse or ritualistic influences.

He added that the tragedy reflects deeper social issues often ignored by families and society, emphasizing the need for communities to recognize early warning signs in troubled youth. The SAPS Occult Related Crimes Unit has been assigned to investigate the case further to uncover the full circumstances behind the incident.
