The African National Congress has confirmed that suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu will continue carrying out his organisational duties within the party, despite facing a corruption investigation and offering to step aside.

Mchunu, who sits on both the ANC’s National Executive Committee and National Working Committee, has already appeared before Parliament’s ad hoc committee. However, he has yet to testify at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which was set up by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

According to ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu, Mchunu informed the party that he was willing to step back from organisational responsibilities following the announcement of the Commission. She said the ANC acknowledges his cooperation with both the Madlanga Commission and the ANC’s own Integrity Commission, describing this as consistent with the party’s values of accountability and discipline.

Bhengu added that the NEC had reviewed the circumstances surrounding the matter and decided that Mchunu would continue performing party duties while remaining on special leave from his ministerial role. She stressed that the party would monitor developments and revisit the issue if necessary.

The ANC reiterated its long-standing policy that once a member is formally criminally charged, they voluntarily step aside until their case is concluded — a principle the party says reflects its commitment to ethical leadership and transparency.

Meanwhile, Mchunu recently appointed Sithembiso Mshengu, a former ANC Youth League activist and political communicator, as his personal spokesperson. Mshengu will handle all media engagement related to Mchunu’s upcoming testimony before the Commission and Parliament.

The appointment comes as allegations continue to swirl around Mchunu, including claims that he maintained connections with suspected gang figures accused of using political ties to influence policing and judicial processes. These claims have deepened public scrutiny as he prepares for further appearances before investigative bodies.

The African National Congress (ANC) is deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Comrade Nathi Mthethwa, a stalwart of our movement, former Minister and Ambassador. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and comrades during this difficult time.

Comrade Mthethwa was not merely a public official; he was a committed cadre of the liberation struggle and a dedicated servant of the people in our democratic era. His life was one of both struggle and service.

From the years of resistance, clandestine work, and sacrifice, Comrade Mthethwa contributed to the collective efforts that won our democracy. In the post-1994 era, he accepted the responsibilities of shaping the new South Africa.

He served in multiple ministerial portfolios, including:

Minister of Safety and Security between 2008 and 2009,

Minister of Police between May 2009 to May 2014,

Minister of Arts and Culture between May 2014 and May 2019, and

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture between May 2019 and March 2023.

In every role, he sought to bring transformation, cohesion, and dignity to our people. His commitment to the nation was visible in all material times.

As a member of the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC) between 2007 and 2022, he played a role in guiding the direction of our movement. His presence will be sorely missed in our ranks, but his legacy endures: in the policies he advanced, the institutions he helped build, and the values he upheld.

We salute his life of sacrifice and leadership. We pledge to support his family in their grief, and to honour him by redoubling our efforts to build the South Africa he believed in—a National Democratic Society.

The African National Congress (ANC) celebrates the decisive by-election victories in Ward 4 (Emalahleni Sub-Region, Chris Hani Region, Eastern Cape) and in Ward 34 (Fetakgomo Tubatse Sub-Region, Sekhukhune Region, Limpopo). These results unequivocally reaffirm that the ANC is the dependable choice of the people, firmly rooted in their struggles, hopes, and determination for a better life.

We thank the community of Emalahleni and Fetakgomo Tubatse, as well as the voters, ANC volunteers, activists, and everyone whose unwavering support has made these victories possible. Your loyalty, commitment, and participation are a testament to the fact that the ANC is not just trusted but passionately loved by the people as their movement for liberation and transformation.

Congratulations to Councillor Thembinkosi Klaas and Councillor Mahlatse Mathipa on their election victories. You must lead with humility, dignity, respect, and honesty, always prioritizing the needs of the people above all else.

These victories come as a powerful prelude to the Special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Local Government and the Roll Call of Councillors Meeting. At this critical gathering, we will redefine the ANC agenda for service delivery, sharpen our interventions, and accelerate the pace of development in line with our renewal mandate.

The people of South Africa have made their choice crystal clear that they place their faith and trust in the ANC. These results starkly contradict the narratives of decline pushed by naysayers and hostile forces, including their opinion polls. The outcomes are indisputable and firm that the ANC stands stable, united, and effective in delivering results.

Our renewal project is succeeding, and the ANC remains the stable force that the people can count on. With every ward retained and every mandate renewed, the ANC recommits to intensifying service delivery, strengthening local government, and ensuring that the people’s needs are always placed first.
