In a major revelation, The New York Times reports that the CIA had been closely tracking Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for several months.

The agency provided Israel with highly reliable intelligence confirming that Khamenei would be present at a key meeting of top Iranian officials in Tehran on Saturday.

Israeli intelligence independently corroborated the details of this gathering at a leadership compound, which was set to include senior defense figures. Seizing the opportunity, both the U.S. and Israel decided to advance their planned operation, accelerating the timeline for a targeted strike amid heightened regional tensions.

Political parties have responded to the ongoing terror faced by the residents of Sporong in Randfontein in Gauteng after 600 residents have been forcibly displaced since December 2025.

The residents has been forced to seek shelter in the Randgate Boxing Club and at the local community hall in Kagiso in the West Rand.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and African Transformation Movement (ATM) said they are deeply troubled to witness the displacement of approximately 300 families, primarily women and children who have been forced to flee their homes due to threats of violence and kidnapping from these so-called Zama zamas.

“The ATM is appalled by the apparent lack of intervention from our armed forces and law enforcement agencies in addressing this crisis. The failure to protect South African citizens on their own soil raises serious concerns about national security and the effectiveness of our intelligence services. It is unacceptable that our communities are left vulnerable to external threats, leading to fear and instability,” said ATM Spokesperson Zama Ntshona.

Ntshona said: “We call on the government to take immediate and decisive action to restore safety and security for all South Africans. This includes deploying law enforcement to the affected areas, providing necessary support to displaced families and ensuring that perpetrators of such violence are held accountable.”

The ATM and the EFF urges all South Africans to stand united in defending our communities against criminal elements that seek to undermine our safety and sovereignty. We cannot allow fear to dictate our lives or our future.

“The EFF Gauteng has taken note, with serious concern, of the deeping humanitarian and security crisis confronting residents of Sporong, in the Kagiso Area in West Rand. This crisis arises from violent intimidation, terror, and forceful displacement carried out by illegal miners, commonly known as Zama-zamas.

“We call for immediate humanitarian assistance to address their urgent needs. The overcrowded conditions in the Randgate community hall pose serious health risks and require urgent attention from local and national authorities,” said EFF Gauteng Chairperson Nkululeko Dunga.

President Donald Trump has stirred up fresh controversy by suggesting he could impose new tariffs on any countries that refuse to support his push to bring Greenland under U.S. control. He made the comment during a White House roundtable on rural healthcare, saying something along the lines of: “I may put a tariff on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security.”

Greenland, the world’s largest island, is a self-governing territory under Denmark, but Trump has been vocal about why the U.S. should own it outright. He argues it’s crucial for American defense. Thanks to its strategic spot in the Arctic, between North America and potential threats from Russia or China. The location is perfect for early-warning missile systems and keeping an eye on ships in the region.

Here are some striking views of Greenland’s snowy capital, Nuuk, where colorful houses stand out against the winter landscape:

The U.S. already has a long-standing military presence there, with over 100 personnel at Pituffik Space Base (formerly known as Thule Air Base), a key missile-monitoring station operating since World War II.

Trump has talked about getting Greenland “the easy way” (like buying it) or “the hard way,” and he hasn’t ruled out stronger measures. Denmark has pushed back hard, warning that any military move would destroy NATO since the alliance is built on allies defending each other, not one attacking another.

European countries like France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, and others have responded by sending small military teams to Greenland for reconnaissance and to show support. Most people in Greenland itself strongly oppose the idea of being bought or taken over.

Meanwhile, a bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers including Democrats and some moderate Republicans is visiting Denmark and Greenland right now. They’re meeting local leaders to listen to their concerns and try to “lower the temperature” back in Washington. Some lawmakers are even working on bills to block any U.S. annexation attempt.

The situation remains tense, with high-level talks between U.S., Danish, and Greenlandic officials failing to bridge the gap so far. Trump’s special envoy has suggested the U.S. should negotiate directly with Greenland’s leaders rather than Denmark, insisting a deal will happen because the U.S. offers “liberty, economic strength, and protection.”

It’s a high-stakes standoff that’s putting strain on longtime alliances, all over this remote, resource-rich island.

The drone was tracked after crossing into Israeli airspace and was subsequently intercepted by IDF forces. Security forces recovered a cache of weapons from the drone, including 20 M16 rifles, as well as a weapons barrel and a stock of additional firearm components. The IDF said the seized weapons were transferred to security authorities for further investigation and processing.

In a statement, the military said the interception highlights continued attempts to smuggle weapons into Israel using unmanned aerial systems. The IDF did not disclose the origin of the drone or the intended destination of the weapons, citing ongoing security assessments.

Israeli security agencies have repeatedly warned that weapon smuggling poses a significant threat to public safety and national security. The incident comes amid heightened security vigilance along Israel’s borders. Investigations into the incident are continuing.

]]>
Anxiety and cautious optimism are spreading across Nigeria following fresh airstrikes by the United States and its allies on suspected terrorist camps in the North-West, with warnings that more attacks could follow.

The bombings, which began on December 25, 2025, have sparked mixed reactions nationwide. While some Nigerians see the strikes as long overdue action against violent extremists, others worry about the broader implications for national sovereignty, religious harmony, and long-term security.

The military action is aimed at dismantling terrorist networks accused of carrying out deadly attacks and mass killings over the past decade. Thousands of lives have been lost, communities displaced, and entire regions destabilised by insurgency, banditry, and violent extremism.

The US president described the strikes as forceful and precise, warning that further action would be taken if attacks on Christian communities continued. According to US officials, the operation targeted terrorist elements and was coordinated with Nigerian authorities.

The situation has placed Nigeria at the centre of growing international attention, with global leaders weighing in on the violence and calling for an end to attacks on civilians. Israel also joined calls condemning the killings, adding to the international pressure surrounding Nigeria’s security crisis.

Nigeria’s government confirmed that the airstrikes were part of a broader security partnership with international allies. Officials stressed that the collaboration involves intelligence sharing, strategic coordination, and operations carried out in line with international law and respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Authorities emphasised that the primary goal of all counter-terrorism efforts remains the protection of civilian lives, national unity, and the rights of all citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity. The government reiterated that terrorism, whether directed at Christians, Muslims, or other communities, contradicts Nigeria’s values and threatens global peace.

Experts and analysts, however, remain divided. Some argue that foreign military intervention sends a strong message to terrorists and their sponsors, showing that the international community will no longer look away. Others warn that airstrikes alone cannot solve deeply rooted problems such as poor governance, poverty, exclusion, and weak institutions.

Several security and political analysts cautioned that bombing campaigns risk being interpreted as religiously motivated, potentially inflaming tensions in an already fragile country. They argue that sustainable peace can only be achieved through inclusive governance, economic development, and social justice, rather than military force alone.

Retired diplomats and security experts described the strikes as both an opportunity and a risk. While successful operations could weaken terror groups and improve security, failure or missteps could plunge the country into deeper instability.

International law experts also noted that terrorism is now treated as a global threat that often overrides traditional boundaries of sovereignty, arguing that Nigeria’s security is tied to regional and global stability.

Meanwhile, US defence officials warned that additional strikes are possible, describing the Christmas Day operation as only the beginning. Nigerian authorities confirmed that intelligence cooperation played a key role in the operation and described the action as a joint effort to combat terrorism and protect civilians.

Not everyone agrees with the approach. A prominent Islamic cleric strongly criticised the involvement of foreign forces, warning that continued cooperation with the US could turn Nigeria into a battleground for global power struggles. He urged the government to seek security partnerships with more neutral countries and cautioned that foreign intervention could deepen religious divisions and undermine sovereignty.

The Defence Headquarters later confirmed the airstrikes, stating that they were carried out with federal approval and based on credible intelligence. Military officials said the operation was carefully planned to weaken terrorist capabilities while minimising harm to civilians.

Several retired military officers welcomed the strikes, describing them as a positive step in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism. They stressed, however, that operations must remain precise and focused on criminals and their sponsors, not innocent citizens.

US lawmakers also praised the strikes, calling them a decisive move to halt the killing of Christians and restore security in affected communities. They described the operation as a first step toward ending years of bloodshed and instability.

As Nigeria watches events unfold, the airstrikes have opened a new chapter in the country’s long-running battle with terrorism — one filled with both hope for improved security and fear of unintended consequences.

]]>
The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Michael Masiapato has confirmed the significant disruption of smuggling of illicit goods and food items which took place yesterday, 15 December 2025 at the Beitbridge Port of Entry.

Since the start of the 2025/26 festive season operations, the BMA has recorded a successful interception, with more than R350 000 worth of non-perishable food items as well as 210 x car batteries weighing 2063 and valued at over R412 600. The BMA also intercepted a H100 Hyundai truck with the value of R159 000.These interceptions were made successful through the deployment of advanced, multi-faceted surveillance technology in operationally vulnerable areas.

Commissioner Masiapato said the milestone reflects the impact of an intelligence-led and technology-driven approach to border law enforcement.

“As part of the BMA’s intensified law enforcement posture for the 2025/26 festive period, the Authority has partnered with DCD Protected Mobility, a local South African defence company, in collaboration with its partners Aselsan South Africa and Unipro Protective Wear. Through this partnership, the South African Defence Industry is supporting the BMA by demonstrating the effectiveness of integrated surveillance, mobility and command-and-control systems” Dr Masiapato said.

The integrated solution has been deployed at Beitbridge, one of the country’s highest-volume land ports of entry, which is historically vulnerable to cross-border criminal activities. This initiative forms part of a structured pilot project aimed at enhancing visibility, accountability and situational awareness during the busiest travel seasons of the year.

DCD Protected Mobility has supported the BMA with three specialised vehicles for border patrol operations, comprising two Springbuck Standard Duty personnel carriers for patrol duties and one Sherp all-terrain vehicle designed for operations in extremely challenging terrain. These platforms are configured to support command and control, ambulance services and weapon-platform capabilities, significantly strengthening operational reach and responsiveness.

Since the commencement of this support, the BMA has intercepted a variety of illicit goods including illicit alcohol , counterfeit food and clothing and many illegal immigrants who were detected along the borderline. Furthermore, the deployment of this equipment has deterred illegal movements along the borderline further demonstrating the effectiveness of integrated technology and mobility solutions in disrupting organised smuggling activities.

Commissioner Masiapato emphasised that festive season operations are not only focused on facilitating legitimate travel and trade, but also on decisively dismantling criminal networks that undermine the country’s security and economy.

“The message is clear: South Africa’s borders are no longer soft targets. Through innovation, strong partnerships and decisive enforcement, the BMA will continue to protect the sovereignty of the Republic, the integrity of its borders and the safety of its people,” added Commissioner Masiapato.

]]>
A security and counter-terrorism expert, Brant Philip, has claimed that the United States has begun conducting reconnaissance missions inside Nigeria as part of a military cooperation arrangement aimed at tackling growing terrorist threats in the region.

According to him, a US manned ISR aircraft flew over ISWAP-controlled areas in the southwestern part of Lake Chad, Borno State, on Saturday. He said the aircraft took off from Accra, Ghana, before entering Nigerian airspace and later returned the same route.

Philip stated earlier that the US Department of War had started reconnaissance flights over western Nigeria from its base in Ghana, despite no public announcement by the Nigerian government. He suggested that undisclosed agreements may have been signed behind closed doors.

He added that the alleged deal may allow the US to conduct unmanned airstrikes against terrorist targets in Nigeria, though only UAVs — not fighter jets or bombers — would be permitted. He said US forces would likely support Nigeria by filling intelligence and surveillance gaps using both manned and unmanned aircraft, possibly operating from the Kainji Air Base in Niger State.

On Sunday, Philip claimed that the same US ISR aircraft returned for the third consecutive day to monitor ISWAP’s “Mantiqah Krinwa” area in Borno State.

His claims have sparked mixed reactions. Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad criticised the disclosures, accusing the expert of revealing sensitive military information that could benefit ISWAP.

The allegations come amid tense relations between Nigeria and the US following past disagreements over terrorism-related assessments and warnings. A recent high-level meeting between Nigerian officials and US defence leaders focused on addressing violence against Christians and strengthening cooperation against jihadist groups in West Africa.

Despite the growing online discussion, neither the Nigerian government nor the United States has issued any official statement confirming or denying the presence of US reconnaissance or military operations on Nigerian soil.

Meanwhile, Nigeria continues to confront widespread insecurity, including kidnappings, killings, and banditry, leaving many citizens fearful and frustrated.

A quiet evening near Delhi’s historic Red Fort was shattered when a car suddenly exploded at a traffic light, killing at least eight people and injuring several others. The blast happened at around 6:52 pm local time, close to a busy metro station and one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.

Authorities say the car, a Hyundai i20, had been moving slowly before coming to a stop at the red light. Moments later, it erupted in flames, damaging nearby vehicles and sending people running in all directions. Emergency teams rushed to the scene, where charred metal and broken glass littered the road.

Investigators are working to determine what caused the explosion and say they are examining every possible angle. Security teams, forensic experts, and national investigators have all been deployed to the site.

Leaders across the country have expressed heartbreak over the tragedy. The prime minister extended condolences to the families who lost loved ones, while opposition figures described the incident as deeply distressing. Senior officials visited both the scene and nearby hospitals where the injured were taken.

Witnesses say the moments after the blast were filled with fear and confusion. One man who was only a few hundred metres away described feeling the ground shake and noticing a sudden silence before crowds erupted into panic. Though he did not go close to the wreckage, he could see parts of the vehicle burning while bystanders tried to assist the wounded.

States surrounding Delhi have heightened security, especially at religious sites and crowded districts. Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh have also been placed on high alert due to the severity of the explosion and Delhi’s high-profile landmarks. Uttar Pradesh, home to major tourist attractions like the Taj Mahal, has increased patrols in vulnerable areas.

The explosion near the Red Fort—an iconic 17th-century Mughal monument visited by thousands daily—has raised fresh concerns about public safety and the need for tighter security around major sites in the capital.
