Mthethwa, who previously served as Minister of Police, tragically died after falling from the 22nd floor of a hotel in Paris last week. Masemola explained that although five investigators were initially meant to travel, the number has been reduced to one due to the nature of the cooperation between South African and French police.

He stated that the officer’s task is not to conduct a formal investigation but to engage directly with French officials and receive a first-hand report. “It’s important that we handle this matter with care and transparency,” said Masemola. “Ambassador Mthethwa was representing South Africa and the president abroad, so we must ensure the process is handled respectfully.”

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation is already involved in the case, while the SAPS representative will work closely with French authorities before returning home. Masemola assured the public that every step is being taken to provide clarity and respect to Mthethwa’s family during this difficult time.

Comrade Mthethwa was not merely a public official; he was a committed cadre of the liberation struggle and a dedicated servant of the people in our democratic era. His life was one of both struggle and service.

From the years of resistance, clandestine work, and sacrifice, Comrade Mthethwa contributed to the collective efforts that won our democracy. In the post-1994 era, he accepted the responsibilities of shaping the new South Africa.

He served in multiple ministerial portfolios, including:

Minister of Safety and Security between 2008 and 2009,

Minister of Police between May 2009 to May 2014,

Minister of Arts and Culture between May 2014 and May 2019, and

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture between May 2019 and March 2023.

In every role, he sought to bring transformation, cohesion, and dignity to our people. His commitment to the nation was visible in all material times.

As a member of the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC) between 2007 and 2022, he played a role in guiding the direction of our movement. His presence will be sorely missed in our ranks, but his legacy endures: in the policies he advanced, the institutions he helped build, and the values he upheld.

We salute his life of sacrifice and leadership. We pledge to support his family in their grief, and to honour him by redoubling our efforts to build the South Africa he believed in—a National Democratic Society.
