The crash happened just after midday on the N2 between Umdloti Beach and La Mercy during heavy rain. Emergency crews arriving at the scene found one half of the vehicle resting near the pole and the other scattered between the north- and southbound lanes.
Authorities say the driver, a foreign national traveling alone, appears to have lost control on the slick road before striking the pole. Despite the car being split into two pieces, the man was treated on scene and did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
Wet conditions and poor visibility are believed to have contributed to the crash.

The N2 between Kokstad and Port Shepstone has been shut down completely due to heavy snowfall, making travel in the area dangerous and nearly impossible.
But it’s not just the snow—KZN officials are reporting fierce winds uprooting trees, heavy rainfall, and large waves crashing along the coast, creating a risky mix for anyone on the road.
Further inland, the R56 at Droewig has also been closed. This stretch runs between Kokstad and New Amalfi on the border of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.
In the Eastern Cape, Barkly East has been hit particularly hard, blanketed in thick snow, while parts of the Northern Cape and Free State are also shivering under icy conditions.
Authorities are urging everyone to stay safe, stay warm, and delay travel if possible as crews work to clear roads and monitor the evolving situation.
