]]> Six armed suspects were fatally shot in a shootout with the South African Police Service (SAPS) on the R61 road between Mthatha and Ngcobo on Monday, June 23, 2025, authorities confirmed. 

 

The incident, which occurred during an intelligence-driven operation targeting alleged extortionists, led to the recovery of four firearms at the scene.

 

According to SAPS Eastern Cape, the shootout erupted when police engaged the suspects, believed to be linked to extortion activities plaguing the region.

 

The R61 road is temporarily closed as investigators processed the active crime scene.
