The High Court of South Africa, Mpumalanga Division convicted and sentenced Innocent Sthembiso Maseko (35) to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Mbali Lucy Ngubeni, at Silobela in Carolina in Mpumalanga.

Maseko and Ngubeni were in a domestic relationship and resided together.

According National Prosecuting Authority(NPA) Monica Nyuswa said the incident occurred on 20 August 2024, when the couple was in their bedroom, and an argument broke out, which escalated into a physical altercation.

“During the altercation, the accused poured petrol on the deceased and set her alight. The deceased pleaded with the accused to stop burning her. Despite sustaining severe burn injuries, she managed to run from the room into the passage of the house and called out to a friend who was sleeping in another room for assistance. The friend managed to extinguish the fire by pouring water on her.

“The deceased was subsequently taken to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries a week later. The incident was reported to the police, and the accused was arrested. During the trial, Maseko pleaded not guilty and claimed that he was not present when the deceased caught fire. However, State Advocate Sello Malesa presented compelling evidence, including testimony from multiple witnesses and a statement made by the deceased,” she said.

Nyuswa said the deceased’s friend also testified about what she observed during the incident.

“The court found the State’s witnesses credible and rejected the accused’s version of events. In aggravation of sentence, Advocate Malesa argued that domestic-related offences have become a serious problem in the country, which has resulted in Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) being declared a national crisis.

“He further highlighted the accused’s lack of remorse and urged the court not to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence.

A Victim Impact Statement, compiled by the deceased’s mother and facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Nomfundo Mokoena, detailed the severe and ongoing psychological and emotional trauma endured by the family,” she said.

Nyuswa said that in delivering the sentence, the presiding judge remarked that it is the duty of the courts to send a strong message to would-be offenders that such offences cannot be tolerated.

“The court found no substantial and compelling circumstances warranting a deviation from the prescribed minimum sentence and accordingly imposed life imprisonment. Maseko was further declared unfit to possess a firearm, and his application for leave to appeal was dismissed,” she said.

43-year old Sergeant Joseph Kutu who was attached to Witbank Tactical Response Team lost his life in Vosman, Emalahleni, in Mpumalanga shot and killed in an event which is alleged to have been ochestrated by his wife Patricia Kutu in July 2021.

Accused number three, Xolani Ndabezitha was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by Mpumalanga Division of the High Court sitting in Middelburg on 11 February 2026 after he pleaded guilty on all charges.

On 18 February 2026 (Wednesday) accused number two, Bonginkosi Langa, pleaded guilty on all charges and was sentenced by the same court to 20 years imprisonment.

Five years were suspended for five years on condition that he is not found guilty of similar offence. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The reports suggest that Kutu was coming back from deployment when he met his untimely death.

It was established through the investigation that upon his arrival at home in Vosman, Emalahleni, his wife was not at home.

The deceased’s wife, Patricia Kutu, later arrived and parked the vehicle in the garage. She allegedly entered the house with two suspects who opened fire. Kutu succumbed to his wounds shortly thereafter in hospital.

The docket was handed over to the Hawks Middelburg-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit.

The investigation led to the arrest of two accused linked to the gruesome murder, and two service firearms, a handgun and a rifle, were recovered.

An intense investigation further led to the arrest of Sgt Kutu’s wife, as the trio conspired to commit murder.

Since the accused were arrested, they were denied bail. Kutu’s wife appealed and was later released on R10 000.00 bail.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for 17 January 2028.

According to SAPS Mpumalanga, an investigation into the orchestrated hit that cut short the life of 43-year-old , is nearing an end as one accused was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in a judgment handed down by the Mpumalanga High Court sitting in Middelburg.

The reports suggest that Kutu was coming back from deployment when he met his untimely death.

Since the accused were arrested, they were denied bail. Kutu’s wife appealed and was later released on R10 000.00 bail.

The matter was set to proceed on 09 February 2026, but was postponed to 11 February 2026, due to legal representation challenges.

On 11 February 2026, Xolani Ndabezitha (29) pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment.

The Mpumalanga High Court has ruled in favour of Tamara Silinda, daughter of the late former Deputy President David Mabuza, stopping the distribution of his R44.7-million pension fund administered by Alexforbes.

Silinda lodged an urgent court application after discovering she was excluded as a beneficiary despite being one of Mabuza’s dependents.

At the time of his death, Nonhlanhla Mnisi, who was cited as Mabuza’s wife, had been named the sole beneficiary. But Silinda and her mother, Emunah, challenged this, producing a Home Affairs document showing that Mabuza was not legally married when he died.

In court, Silinda’s lawyer, Advocate Doctor Sibuyi, argued that evidence suggested Mabuza had instructed Alexforbes in May to amend his beneficiary list to include his children — but he passed away two months later before this was finalised.

The case raises major questions about the future distribution of Mabuza’s estate and could set the stage for a prolonged inheritance battle.

The Mpumalanga High Court is today expected to deliver judgment in the high-stakes battle over the late former Deputy President David Mabuza’s R44-million pension payout.

The dispute pits multiple claimants against each other:

Nonhlanhla Mbisi, who argues she is Mabuza’s sole legal wife and rightful beneficiary.

Emunah Silinda, who maintains she has been Mabuza’s customary wife since 1999.

Several of Mabuza’s children are also seeking recognition as beneficiaries.

The ruling will determine who is entitled to inherit Mabuza’s multi-million-rand estate, a decision set to have both legal and political implications given his long-standing influence in South African politics.
