Soweto is gearing up for a celebration of local hip-hop culture as the Motswako Republic Tour makes its next stop at Disoufeng in Meadowlands. The event, set for Saturday, 6 September, marks the start of Heritage Month with a night devoted entirely to Motswako rap.

Under the banner “Motswako Rap Is Not Dead,” the show reunites some of the genre’s biggest names, including Skwatta Kamp, Morafe, Tuks Senganga, Ginger Trill, Huge Da Oracle, Thato Saul, Molemi, and Maglera Doe Boy. DJs Zan D and C-Live will keep the energy high, while Kaya FM’s Bonolo “Beesting” Molosiwa takes on hosting duties.

Organisers say the line-up is a nod to the sound that helped shape South Africa’s hip-hop identity. Fans can expect timeless classics, throwbacks, and live performances from artists who defined the movement.

Born in the 2000s, Motswako—meaning “mixture” in Setswana—blends Setswana and English lyrics to create a distinctly Southern African hip-hop voice. Artists like the late HHP, Tuks, Molemi, Morafe, and Khuli Chana pushed the style from Mafikeng and Botswana into the national spotlight, inspiring a generation.

The Disoufeng team sees the timing as perfect. “It’s the ideal way to open Heritage Month while honouring a homegrown sound,” says events manager Tebogo Phiri.
