According to family spokesperson Daniel Ramasedi said Moipone had recently undergone a Caesarean section and was recovering at home while caring for her newborn child.

He said instead of being surrounded by peace, rest and the joy of new life, her family is now preparing to bury both mother and baby.

“In her final moments, Moipone reportedly tried to save baby Naledi by handing her to neighbours through the burglar bars of a window as flames and smoke spread through the home. Naledi later succumbed to her injuries.

“Moipone’s 12-year-old daughter survived and managed to escape the house. A young child now remains without her mother, without her baby sister, and with memories no child should ever have to carry,” he said.

He said it is understood that Moipone’s partner was not at the home when the fire broke out at approximately 1am.

“The family calls on investigators to fully establish the timeline of all movements and events relating to the fire. We respectfully urges the South African Police Service to treat this matter with the highest urgency, secure all evidence, and leave no question unanswered.

“A mother fought for her child until her final breath. A newborn baby had barely entered the world. Both are gone. The family asks the public to keep the surviving child and all grieving relatives in their prayers, and urges anyone with information to contact the investigating officer at Springs Police Station,” he said.

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the incident.

“An inquest has been opened on 18 April 2026. Investigation is underway,” said Sibeko.
