The IEC stated that the meeting is part of its stakeholder engagements aimed at strengthening democratic processes and safeguarding electoral integrity.

This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa officially announced November 4 as the date for the local government elections, setting in motion the process for South Africans to elect their municipal leaders.

“This engagement forms part of the commission’s ongoing stakeholder outreach in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), following a successful week-long programme of consultations conducted from 20-24 April 2024, in preparation for the 4 November 2026 municipal elections,” the IEC said in a statement released on Sunday.

The MKP revived its grievances in late 2024 and early 2025, alleging widespread rigging and a “blackout” of the results dashboard during the May 2024 elections.

Most recently, in April 2026, Zuma suggested the party might call for the postponement of the upcoming local government elections until these disputes are resolved.

As of June 2025, the MKP had lodged formal complaints regarding voter rolls for local by-elections, specifically in Ward 13 (Seshego).

The party alleges that non-residents were registered in the system.

Meanwhile, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the IEC have investigated claims that the MKP forged thousands of signatures to meet registration requirements for the 2024 ballot.

Additionally, ActionSA has petitioned the IEC to investigate the MKP’s financial declarations, claiming a significant discrepancy between the party’s reported donations (approximately R380,000) and the estimated R100 million cost of its 2024 national campaign. While the Electoral Court and Constitutional Court previously confirmed that the MKP’s initial registration was legally compliant, dismissing challenges from the ANC, other legal battles have persisted.

The high-profile case regarding Zuma’s eligibility to serve as an MP was settled by the Constitutional Court in May 2024, which ruled that he was ineligible due to his contempt-of-court conviction.

Furthermore, multiple legal attempts by party founder Jabulani Khumalo to be reinstated as the party’s leader, claiming his removal by Zuma was fraudulent, have been dismissed by the courts.
