Sports minister Gayton McKenzie has taken a step that is likely to irk super fan Joyce “Mama Joy” Chauke even more.

McKenzie has pledged to find independent sponsors to enable fans to accompany Bafana Bafana to the World Cup in Mexico, Canada and the US.

Mama Joy trended over the weekend for her fallout with the minister whom she accused of ‘not liking’ the fans who usually go with the national team to big tournaments.

After learning that the department of sports would no longer sponsor fans, Mama Joy took to X to voice her dissatisfaction.

“To all SA fans let’s just accept no Worldcup for us. @GaytonMcK @MinisterMcK @SportArtsCultur won’t be able to help us.

“You are at your own (sic). Let’s just pray for the President to give us a new Minister of sport that can love fans,” wrote Mama Joy.

And now on Monday, McKenzie has promised to phone a few possible sponsors to help take fans to the World Cup in June.

“I think we should have each club nominate the best and most consistent supporter for a trip to the World Cup,” wrote McKenzie.

“It has to be someone who rarely misses a game. I will start calling sponsors…”

It is clear that Mama Joy will be left out of this arrangement if it happens as she currently does not support any local team.

She had jumped ship and left Orlando Pirates for the now defunct Royal AM when it was launched s few years ago.

But the club, led by flamboyant Durban businesswoman Shauwm Mkhize was dissolved by SARS last year.

Shauwn Mkhize has since bought Mbanane Highlanders in Eswatini, and Mama Joy followed her.

At least 13 people have lost their lives and nearly 100 others were injured after a passenger train derailed in southern Mexico’s Oaxaca region, authorities have confirmed.

The train was travelling across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, linking the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean, when it came off the tracks while navigating a bend near the town of Nizanda. There were 241 passengers and nine crew members on board at the time of the crash.

Officials said 98 people were injured, with 36 taken to hospital for treatment. Five of those hurt are reported to be in serious condition.

Images from the scene showed chaotic rescue efforts as emergency workers helped passengers escape from the damaged carriages, some of which had tilted dangerously close to a cliff after leaving the tracks. Wounded passengers were carried to safety as others walked away from the wreckage in shock.

Mexico’s president said senior government officials were heading to the crash site to oversee rescue operations and assess the situation firsthand. An official investigation has also been launched to determine what caused the derailment.

The train involved is part of the Interoceanic rail project, a key transport link connecting the Pacific port of Salina Cruz with Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast. The service, which includes two locomotives and four passenger cars, is operated by Mexico’s navy.

Oaxaca’s state governor expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and said local authorities are working closely with federal agencies to support victims and their families.

The Interoceanic rail line was launched two years ago as part of a broader effort to stimulate economic growth in southern Mexico. The project aims to modernise transport across the region and turn the area into a major trade corridor through expanded ports, railways and industrial development.

This latest tragedy, however, has cast a shadow over the ambitious initiative and raised fresh concerns about rail safety in the region.

As Fátima Bosch took her first walk after being newly crowned Miss Universe, she will embark on a year dedicated to her work in helping others. Having grown up navigating dyslexia and ADHD, Fátima credits these experiences for sparking her creativity, strength, and purpose. Beyond her work in fashion design, she has spent over a decade volunteering at an oncology hospital and supporting suicide prevention efforts and unaccompanied minors.

The Miss Universe Organization extends its deepest gratitude to Thailand, who has kindly hosted Miss Universe for the fourth time in history; the partners; performers; Selection Committee; and the millions of fans who joined in celebrating this historic day.

Fátima Bosch Fernández was born on May 19, 2000, in Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico. From an early age, she stood out for her lively personality, deep love for nature, and appreciation of her state’s vibrant culture. Surrounded by animals, she developed a strong sense of compassion and empathy that would later define her life’s purpose.

At six years old, she was diagnosed with dyslexia, ADHD, and hyperactivity—challenges that made her early education difficult. Yet, through perseverance and faith, she learned to transform these obstacles into strengths, discovering creativity and resilience within herself.

At sixteen, Fátima moved to Vermont, USA, for a year of study abroad, an experience that broadened her horizons and helped her perfect her English. Upon her return, she achieved one of her childhood dreams by being crowned Flor Tabasco at just seventeen. She later pursued a degree in Fashion and Apparel Design at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, furthering her studies at NABA – Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan, Italy. Passionate about sustainable fashion, she now creates designs that give new life to discarded materials, blending artistry with purpose.

Beyond her creative endeavors, Fátima has spent over nine years volunteering with children battling cancer, organizing an annual Christmas toy drive at the Oncology Hospital of Tabasco. Through her social initiatives Ruta Monarca and Corazón Migrante, she combines environmental awareness with humanitarian outreach, supporting migrants and promoting mental health and hope.

In 2025, Fátima was crowned Miss Universe Mexico, proudly earning the first national crown for Tabasco. Through her platform, she aims to inspire others to embrace their differences and lead with compassion, believing that true beauty lies in service, kindness, and light.

Praveenar Singh was born in Chiang Mai, Thailand, into a warm Thai-Indian family that taught her resilience and gratitude. Growing up, she often felt different from her peers—teased for her name, features, and skin tone—but transformed that pain into purpose. After her father passed, financial struggles led her to move to Yala, where her aunt raised her with love and discipline. From her, Praveenar learned that strength is not perfection but perseverance, and true power comes from leading with compassion.

Her determination earned her a full scholarship to Thammasat University, where she studied while tutoring students in English and mathematics to support herself. Every baht she saved brought her closer to competing in Miss Universe Thailand. In 2018, she joined the competition, driven to show that beauty could serve a purpose. Though she did not win, she promised herself to return until she wore the crown, gaining wisdom, strength, and faith through each setback.

Beyond pageantry, Praveenar pursued international modeling in India and Morocco, deepening her appreciation for culture and connection. In 2020, she launched the “Be an Ally, Not a Bully” campaign, promoting kindness and empathy online, earning national attention and securing First Runner-Up at Miss Universe Thailand 2020. She later founded an award-winning online TV platform highlighting community heroes and used her influence to empower others through storytelling and advocacy.

Her journey continued with resilience—returning to compete in 2023, caring for her mother in Canada, studying acting, and founding a clean-makeup brand promoting accessible, chemical-free beauty. Finally, in 2025, she was crowned Miss Universe Thailand. Through initiatives like “Be an Ally, Not a Bully,” “We Unite,” and “Shero,” she inspires people to embrace individuality and unity, using her platform to create a kinder, more inclusive world.

Born on May 25, 1997, in Candelaria, Quezon, a small town defined by faith and resilience, Ahtisa Manalo grew up in a home stitched together by love, family, and perseverance. Her childhood was shaped by the generosity of extended family, moving between relatives’ homes and even living in a tiny 15-square-meter makeshift house. From her mother, a small-business entrepreneur, and her stepfather, a hardworking tricycle driver, she learned responsibility, discipline, and the quiet strength required to care for others.

As the eldest of three, she became her family’s early breadwinner, turning small tasks like collecting bottles for recycling into lessons in resourcefulness and frugality. Her first encounter with courage came at ten, when she entered her first beauty pageant—not for a crown, but for a chance at education. Pageantry became a bridge between who she was and the woman she aspired to be, teaching her resilience, self-discovery, and the power of perseverance.

Beyond the stage, Ahtisa is a successful entrepreneur, founding five brands with over 100 branches nationwide, and an advocate for youth empowerment. Through her work with Alon Akademie, she inspires young people to dream boldly, think critically, and act responsibly, proving that humble beginnings do not limit potential.

Through triumphs, heartbreaks, and loss, she has cultivated a life rooted in empathy, courage, and unwavering dedication. Her greatest hope is to be remembered not just for achievements, but for the depth of love, care, and impact she brings to every life she touches.

Real name Philani Manyoni, the Pholisa hitmaker recently returned from the USA where he left behind his Irish born fiance in order to pursue his other business interest in South Africa.

Speaking to MDN, Dj Mpiloz said that opening the Ikhaya Shisanyama and Carwash was a dream come true for him.

‘Ikhaya is a Zulu word which means home. I wanted to build something that will always remind me where home is at. With the Shisanyama and Carwash business, I will be able to spend time in the USA and also come back to check on the business on how is it doing. This is something which will make me come back home at anytime,” he said.

Despite being open about his Irish born fiance, Dj Mpiloz said that he prefers his relationship private since she is someone who is not in the public domain.

‘Yes I’m engaged to a beautiful white Irish girl since last year. We are still not married yet hopefully the date will come soon. I will invite you all,” he said giggling.

Speaking about being homesick, Dj Mpiloz said that business as the side hustle will always be good since it will help him to pay the bills.

“I needed something on the side that will feed my family because you know in the music industry sometimes gigs can be dry, but the bills still stand. I needed to have something that can put bread on the table so that I can be able to provide for my family,” he said.

Dj Mpiloz further said that on his latest single titled Pholisa he featured is friends Tebza De Dj and singer Buhle Nhlangulela.

“The way the song was made is magical. I recently came back home because my sister is getting married. Tebza called me and when I arrived in studio there was Buhle. What happened next is magic, that is how Pholisa was made. It was a blessing in disguise because after the wedding I’m going back to the USA where I get more recognition than in SA,” he said.

Dj Mpiloz said that he also get more recognition in the UK, Qatar, Mexico, Netherlands, Kenya , Ethiopia and Argentina just to name the few.

“My dream is to be recognized everywhere, specifically in the international stage. I want to be able to donate houses for the poor, food and clothes for those who are in need,” he said.

A closer look revealed two young orange-fronted parakeets, heavily sedated and stuffed into small brown bags tucked inside his underwear. Martinez, a U.S. citizen living in Tijuana, was trying to smuggle the protected birds into the United States without following required quarantine and inspection procedures.

The birds were found alive but sluggish, and border veterinarians immediately treated them. They were later placed under official quarantine and are expected to recover fully.

Authorities say this wasn’t Martinez’s first attempt to sneak birds across the border. Records indicate he may have been involved in smuggling birds before. He now faces serious federal charges that could bring up to 20 years in prison and significant fines.

Orange-fronted parakeets are considered a vulnerable species, facing threats from intense trapping and illegal wildlife trade. Hundreds of thousands have been trafficked over the years, placing the species under increased pressure.

This case is one of several recent incidents. In April, another man was caught trying to smuggle 12 of the same birds inside his boots, with several not surviving the ordeal. Officials say these cases highlight the cruelty and dangers of wildlife smuggling — both for the animals and the people involved.

Haiti has taken a new step in rebuilding its defense forces as 143 soldiers successfully completed an eight-week military training program in Mexico.

The group, made up of 15 women and 128 men, underwent intensive instruction in self-defense, firearms handling, and human rights under the guidance of the Mexican Army. The training is part of a broader defense partnership between the two countries, designed to strengthen Haiti’s armed forces as the nation struggles with escalating gang violence and political instability.

Haitian officials say the skills acquired will not only boost the country’s security but also support national development and the rule of law.

The effort comes at a critical moment. Since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, armed gangs have tightened their grip on Haiti, controlling most of the capital, Port-au-Prince. With a weakened police force and limited international assistance, the government is increasingly turning to regional allies like Mexico for support in restoring order and stability.

South Sudan announced on Saturday that it has sent a Mexican citizen back to his home country after months in custody.

Officials said Jesús Muñoz-Gutierrez had been among eight migrants transferred to South Sudan from the United States in July. He departed Juba Airport for Mexico following coordination between South Sudan’s foreign ministry and the Mexican Embassy in nearby Ethiopia.

Authorities described the process as following international law, existing agreements, and diplomatic protocols.

Human rights groups have long criticized the U.S. practice of sending migrants to third countries, saying it can breach international standards and leave people without proper legal support. U.S. courts have issued mixed rulings on the issue, with the Supreme Court earlier this year allowing the government to resume certain fast-track removals.

It remains unclear whether Muñoz-Gutierrez or others in his group received legal assistance before their deportation. U.S. officials have said he was previously convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

South Sudan is not the only African country receiving deportees from the United States. Uganda, Eswatini, and Rwanda have also taken in groups of returnees over the past few months, some with criminal records.

US President Donald Trump has declared that starting August 1, a 30% tariff will be placed on goods imported from the European Union and Mexico. He issued a stern warning that if either party responds with retaliatory tariffs, the US would hike the rate even higher.

The EU, a major trading partner of the United States, had earlier expressed hope for a resolution before the new tariffs come into effect. In his communication to European officials, Trump cited years of trade deficits and claimed the relationship was unbalanced due to the EU’s tariffs and trade barriers.

Mexico also received a warning letter from Trump, in which he criticized the country for not doing enough to combat drug trafficking across North America. Although he acknowledged some efforts by Mexico to assist with border control, he insisted they fell short of expectations.

The announcement comes on the heels of Trump’s broader push to overhaul trade relationships. Similar tariff measures are set to be imposed on Japan, South Korea, Canada, and Brazil, as well as several smaller trade partners. Canada, in particular, faces a potential 35% tariff under the same initiative.

European leaders voiced concern over the move. Italy’s prime minister expressed hope for a fair resolution, while the Dutch prime minister emphasized the importance of EU unity. Germany’s auto industry warned of rising costs and potential fallout for manufacturers.

The EU said it remained open to negotiations and was prepared to take proportional action if necessary to protect its interests.

Meanwhile, there was no clarity on whether Mexico’s goods traded under the 2020 United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement would be exempt. Canada has reportedly received confirmation that its agreement terms would apply.

Trump’s administration has now proposed tariff changes affecting 24 countries and the EU. There’s also a broader plan to finalize 90 trade deals in 90 days, with preliminary progress reportedly made with the United Kingdom and Vietnam.

This aggressive trade strategy continues to stir debate globally about its long-term economic consequences and the potential for a full-scale trade conflict.

Mexico has filed a lawsuit against Google for labeling the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” on Google Maps for users in the United States, according to President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Sheinbaum said her administration had contacted Google multiple times, requesting the company to reverse the change. Despite these appeals, the name remained, prompting the government to pursue legal action. The exact location of the lawsuit filing was not disclosed.

The dispute intensified after the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Republicans, voted to officially adopt the “Gulf of America” name for federal use. Former President Donald Trump had previously signed an executive order on his first day in office to support this renaming, claiming that since the United States conducts most of the activities in the area, it has the right to rename it.

However, the Mexican government argues that the order should only apply to the U.S. segment of the continental shelf and does not give the U.S. the authority to rename the entire gulf.

In January, President Sheinbaum wrote to Google asking for the restoration of the Gulf of Mexico label. A month later, she warned of possible legal consequences if the request was ignored.

Google responded that the name update followed its usual process of reflecting changes made by official government sources. The platform stated that the name “Gulf of America” appears only for U.S. users, while users in Mexico continue to see “Gulf of Mexico.” Elsewhere, the label reads “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”

The name change has also sparked tension between the U.S. government and media outlets. One news agency refused to adopt the new term, resulting in its exclusion from certain official events until a judge intervened in April, ordering the White House to restore access.

Additionally, former President Trump recently suggested the U.S. may start calling the Persian Gulf the “Arabian Gulf” or “Gulf of Arabia” during his upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia. This proposal has drawn sharp criticism from Iranian officials, who warned that such a move would provoke widespread backlash.
