At around 10:40am, officers responded to a report of a business robbery at a property in Amalgam. Acting quickly, the TRU team entered the premises and discovered nine suspects hiding inside the building.

During the operation, police recovered an unlicensed firearm loaded with live ammunition, which was later linked to an earlier case in Johannesburg Central. Investigations also led to the discovery of a white Isuzu truck believed to have been used in the crime. The vehicle was found fitted with false registration plates.

The firearm, ammunition, vehicle, and other related items were seized as evidence. All nine suspects were arrested and taken into custody at Langlaagte SAPS as investigations continue.

The operation, led by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Home Affairs, forms part of the City’s ongoing intelligence-led crime prevention and by-law enforcement initiatives.

During the operation, 217 women and 413 men were detained for contravening the Immigration Act, having been found in the country without valid documentation. All detained individuals are currently being processed by Home Affairs officials in full compliance with relevant legislation.

Dr Tshwaku commended the professionalism and commitment demonstrated by all agencies involved, stating:

“This operation is a clear demonstration of what can be achieved when law enforcement agencies work together decisively. We will continue to intensify intelligence-driven interventions to restore safety and order in our communities.”

The MMC confirmed that further operations of this nature are planned across the city. The JMPD’s Tactical Response Unit (TRU) and K9 Unit have been tasked with intensifying investigations into criminal syndicates suspected of facilitating human trafficking and illegal immigration in the area.
