Former Tsepo Masilela has raised concerns over whether Manqoba Mngqithi is the right fit for Kaizer Chiefs, despite acknowledging his coaching quality.

Masilela Backs Mngqithi’s Ability but Warns of Challenges

Mngqithi has been strongly linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs, with his experience at Mamelodi Sundowns making him a credible candidate.

However, Masilela believes the Naturena-based club presents a unique challenge that could expose weaknesses in his management approach.

“At big teams, you have experienced players who tend to have opinions,” said Masilela.

“Some have a voice at times and question things, and some coaches don’t like that.”

Concerns Over Player Management

Masilela also reflected on Mngqithi’s short stint as head coach at Mamelodi Sundowns between July and November 2024.

During that period, reports suggested tensions between the coach and senior players, raising questions about his handling of high-profile individuals.

Notably, key players Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau were benched, a decision widely viewed as a clash of egos.

“When I look at that situation at Sundowns with Mokoena and Mudau, I couldn’t understand why those guys were not playing,” Masilela said.

“The coach explained that he was rotating the team to keep everyone fresh.”

According to Masilela, success at Kaizer Chiefs will depend heavily on Mngqithi’s ability to manage strong personalities within the squad.

“Man management in today’s game is very key. You have to be able to manage big egos,” he said.

“If you can’t manage players with an ego or strong personalities, then you lose the trust of the team.”
