A quiet Vhembe village has been shaken by the tragic deaths of two young brothers, as a 27-year-old mother remains behind bars while police continue to investigate what is being treated as a suspected poisoning case.

Thelma Siphugu Ntanganedzeni appeared before the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where she was remanded in police custody. The matter has been postponed to Friday, 12 June 2026, for a formal bail application and the continuation of police investigations.

The case, already gripped by grief and unanswered questions, has left a family fractured and a community searching for clarity in the wake of two sudden and unexplained deaths.

A community stunned by two sudden deaths

The investigation began on Tuesday, 2 June 2026, when police were called to open a murder docket after two brothers, aged six and eight, were found dead in separate but closely linked incidents in Madabani village.

At around 11:10, officers were summoned to Tshilwavhusiku Health Centre after reports that a child had been brought in under suspicious circumstances. On arrival, they found the lifeless body of a six-year-old boy lying on a hospital bed.

Preliminary accounts indicate that the child had been transported to the facility by his father, who does not reside with him. The boy had reportedly fallen ill earlier that morning, complaining of stomach pain, diarrhoea and vomiting before his condition rapidly deteriorated.

What initially appeared to be a medical emergency quickly escalated into a criminal investigation.

Second child found dead at home hours later

Later the same day, at approximately 12:30, police received another distressing report from a family member: an eight-year-old boy from the same household was missing while at school.

A search was launched immediately. The child was later discovered at the family home in Madabani village.

Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene, where the boy was found lying on a bed wearing a blue tracksuit top and matching trousers. He was declared dead on arrival.

The close timing and circumstances surrounding the two deaths raised immediate suspicion among investigators.

Police open murder case as suspicions of poisoning emerge

Preliminary investigations have since revealed that the two deceased children were siblings. Both are now suspected to have died from poisoning, although this has not yet been confirmed.

Police swiftly escalated the matter into a murder investigation, with forensic teams and detectives working to establish what led to the sudden and unexplained deaths.

On Wednesday, 3 June 2026, police arrested the children’s 27-year-old mother in connection with the case.

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding the circumstances of the arrest, and the motive remains unknown at this stage.

Court appearance and ongoing investigation

The accused appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where the matter was postponed to allow for a bail application and continued police work.

A full forensic pathology post-mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death. Investigators say this will be crucial in confirming whether poisoning was involved.

Police have emphasised that the investigation is ongoing and that no final conclusions have been reached.

Questions that remain unanswered

As the case proceeds, the central questions remain unresolved: how did two young siblings die within hours of each other, and what led to their sudden collapse?

For now, the suspect remains in custody, the village of Madabani is left in mourning, and investigators continue to piece together a timeline that has already left a lasting scar on a community.
