The provincial education department expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event. The Education MEC extended heartfelt condolences to the learner’s family, classmates, and teachers, urging them to remain strong in this difficult time. Psychosocial support services have been sent to both the family and the school.

This heartbreaking incident follows a similar school-related emergency earlier this year when a Grade 1 learner at a school in the Western Cape jumped from a first-floor window after reportedly being locked inside a classroom. Fortunately, that child survived with no serious injuries.

These incidents have sparked renewed concerns around safety and supervision in South African schools.
