A Track Record of National Impact

Chief Justice Mandisa Maya, one of South Africa’s most distinguished legal minds, was recognised for her leadership in strengthening judicial independence, expanding access to justice, and championing gender representation in the legal profession. As the first woman to hold the positions of President of the Supreme Court of Appeal and Deputy Chief Justice, and now South Africa’s first female Chief Justice, she has played a pivotal role in transforming the judiciary and advancing constitutional values.

Rali Mampeule, Founder and CEO of the South African Housing and Infrastructure Fund (SAHIF), was honoured with the Special African Philanthropist Icon Award. He was the only South African nominated in the philanthropy category and was recognised for his sustained contribution to housing, education, and community upliftment. Through SAHIF, over 68,000 housing stands have been delivered across the country, enabling thousands of families to build their own homes. His investment in MetroFibre Networx has extended high-speed internet to more than 500,000 households, and through the Mampeule Foundation he has funded over 90 bursaries, provided COVID-19 emergency housing to vulnerable communities, and partnered with the University of Johannesburg and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation to introduce South Africa’s first 3D-printed affordable home.

Standing Among Africa’s Exceptional Leaders

This year’s honourees also include President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia; Namibia’s Minister of Health Dr Kalumbi Shangula; Ethiopia’s Minister of Health Dr Mekdes Daba; and Sierra Leone’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development Kenyeh Barlay, alongside leaders in industrial development, public health and national security.

The African Leadership Magazine Persons of the Year Awards are among the most esteemed continental honours, recognising Africans whose work is actively shaping the future of the continent. The awards highlight leaders who demonstrate integrity, long-term vision and a commitment to advancing development across Africa.

The recognition of Chief Justice Maya and Mampeule places South Africa firmly within this continental movement for principled and impactful leadership. Their contributions show that South Africa continues to produce leaders whose work strengthens communities, expands opportunity and supports the kind of progress the continent needs.
