US President Donald Trump says he plans to take legal action against the BBC over an edited clip of his 6 January 2021 speech that appeared in a Panorama documentary. The BBC has apologised for the edit, saying it was unintentional, but it has refused to offer him any financial compensation.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said he intends to file a lawsuit seeking between $1bn and $5bn, likely sometime next week. He accused the broadcaster of altering his words, saying, “They cheated. They changed the words coming out of my mouth.”

The BBC acknowledged that the edit created the wrong impression — specifically, that Trump had issued a direct call for violence — but said the clip would not be broadcast again. The organisation apologised to Trump but stood firm that no compensation would be paid.

Trump told reporters he had not yet raised the issue with the UK prime minister, though he said he planned to speak with him over the weekend. As of Friday evening, no lawsuit had been officially filed.

A BBC spokesperson said there had been no further communication from Trump’s legal team and that the organisation’s position remained unchanged.

In a separate interview recorded earlier, Trump said he felt an “obligation” to sue, arguing that failing to act would allow similar incidents to happen to others. He described the edit as “egregious” and compared it to a previous dispute he had with another US media outlet.

The Panorama programme at the centre of the controversy featured a shortened sequence of his 2021 speech. Critics said it falsely connected lines that were spoken more than 50 minutes apart. The backlash led to the resignation of the BBC’s director general and its head of news.

In its official clarification, the BBC admitted the edit unintentionally made it appear as if Trump had made a continuous call to action, when in fact it was a combination of separate excerpts. The broadcaster insisted it never intended to mislead and strongly disputed any basis for a defamation claim.

BBC lawyers outlined several reasons they believe Trump has no case, including that the programme was not broadcast in the US, was only available to UK viewers, did not harm Trump’s political prospects, and was not edited with malice. They also noted that political speech is heavily protected under US law.

The issue widened further after a second similar edit from a different BBC programme, aired years earlier, came to light.

Mexico has filed a lawsuit against Google for labeling the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” on Google Maps for users in the United States, according to President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Sheinbaum said her administration had contacted Google multiple times, requesting the company to reverse the change. Despite these appeals, the name remained, prompting the government to pursue legal action. The exact location of the lawsuit filing was not disclosed.

The dispute intensified after the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Republicans, voted to officially adopt the “Gulf of America” name for federal use. Former President Donald Trump had previously signed an executive order on his first day in office to support this renaming, claiming that since the United States conducts most of the activities in the area, it has the right to rename it.

However, the Mexican government argues that the order should only apply to the U.S. segment of the continental shelf and does not give the U.S. the authority to rename the entire gulf.

In January, President Sheinbaum wrote to Google asking for the restoration of the Gulf of Mexico label. A month later, she warned of possible legal consequences if the request was ignored.

Google responded that the name update followed its usual process of reflecting changes made by official government sources. The platform stated that the name “Gulf of America” appears only for U.S. users, while users in Mexico continue to see “Gulf of Mexico.” Elsewhere, the label reads “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”

The name change has also sparked tension between the U.S. government and media outlets. One news agency refused to adopt the new term, resulting in its exclusion from certain official events until a judge intervened in April, ordering the White House to restore access.

Additionally, former President Trump recently suggested the U.S. may start calling the Persian Gulf the “Arabian Gulf” or “Gulf of Arabia” during his upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia. This proposal has drawn sharp criticism from Iranian officials, who warned that such a move would provoke widespread backlash.

Africa’s telecoms giant, MTN Group, is now entangled in a high-stakes legal battle after a US court allowed an Anti-Terrorism Act lawsuit to proceed, further complicating already strained diplomatic relations between South Africa and the United States.

The lawsuit, filed in the Eastern District of New York, accuses MTN and other tech companies of knowingly doing business with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a group designated by the US as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation since 2019. Plaintiffs, over 50 American citizens, allege that MTN’s financial and technical dealings supported IRGC activities that led to the deaths and injuries of US personnel in Iraq between 2011 and 2016.

The ruling to advance the case to the discovery stage comes just one day after President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed MTN chairperson Mcebisi Jonas as South Africa’s Special Envoy to the US. Critics quickly highlighted Jonas’ past remarks against former US President Donald Trump and his links to business in Iran.

Despite the controversy, Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya defended Jonas’ appointment, emphasizing his private citizen status at the time of the remarks and his qualifications in both business and diplomacy.

LegalBrief Africa noted that MTN has already appealed the US court decision. Meanwhile, Washington is considering legislation that could result in diplomatic and economic penalties against South Africa, depending on the case’s outcome and South Africa’s political stance.

Adding to MTN’s legal woes, Turkcell’s $4.2 billion bribery lawsuit against the company over a telecoms contract in Iran remains unresolved in South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal.

Although MTN does not operate in the US, it has partnerships with US companies, including Meta, to improve communication services across Africa. Analysts warn that the lawsuit could trigger broader scrutiny of US business ties with South Africa and place pressure on companies like Microsoft and Meta to reassess their partnerships.

As tensions rise, South Africa’s government faces the challenge of defending one of its largest corporations while managing its vital trade relationship with the United States.
