]]>In a today March 23 statement, the movement praised Mkhwanazi as a figure of “principle, courage, and consistency,” highlighting his July 2025 press conference where he claimed drug cartels influence politicians, SAPS officials, prosecutors, judiciary members, and business leaders, with drugs imported via Durban and processed in Gauteng.
The party stressed that no evidence has disproven his allegations and urged him to ignore public attacks aimed at distracting from the core issues.
The statement comes amid criticism from Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema, who has called Mkhwanazi a “coward,” denied EFF involvement in corruption, and rejected any links to testimonies before the Madlanga Commission and related parliamentary committees.
Mkhwanazi’s claims have prompted investigations, including the Madlanga Commission and a now-concluded parliamentary ad hoc committee on SAPS corruption and political meddling.

]]>Appearing before the Ad Hoc Committee, Mkhwanazi dismissed Nkabinde’s version of events as false and inconsistent with available evidence.
The dispute centres around testimony given by Nkabinde, who told the committee about a trip to Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal, where he claimed he and Mkhwanazi “passed by” and visited Senzo Mchunu.
Nkabinde described the trip as informal, suggesting it was a casual stop while travelling.
“At one stage I was in KZN and as I passed Empangeni, I remembered there was someone I knew here, and Mchunu welcomed me,” Nkabinde told the committee.
He further suggested that the relationship between himself and Mkhwanazi was close, adding that some aspects of the trip were personal and could not be disclosed.
However, Mkhwanazi strongly disputed this account.
He told the committee that the individuals involved were travelling in his wife’s vehicle and that he is prepared to provide full vehicle details for independent verification.
Mkhwanazi said tracking data from the vehicle would clearly contradict Nkabinde’s version.
According to him, the group did not randomly pass by Mchunu’s residence.
Instead, he stated that they departed directly from his home, went straight to Mchunu’s house, and later returned, a version that challenges the claim of an incidental visit.
The commissioner’s testimony has intensified scrutiny on the credibility of witnesses appearing before the committee, with questions now emerging about conflicting versions under oath.
The matter remains part of ongoing proceedings, with further evidence expected as the Ad Hoc Committee continues its hearings.

]]>The post Gloves Are Off Between Businessman Calvin Mathibeli and SAPS KZN Commissioner Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi appeared first on MDNtv.
]]>The South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal says it is preparing to take legal action against businessman Calvin Mathibeli, a move that sharply escalates a dispute that has been building in public between the head of Calvin and Family Group and KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, SAPS in the province rejected Mathibeli’s accusations in the strongest terms, calling them “malicious, baseless, unfounded and somewhat threatening.” Police officials said they would pursue legal recourse over what they describe as statements that unfairly damage reputations and erode public trust.
The response follows a scathing letter Mathibeli wrote on Monday in which he claimed SAPS in KwaZulu-Natal has been targeting him in what he described as a “witch-hunt,” and suggested he is being singled out by the provincial commissioner.

At the heart of the clash is a social media exchange in which Mathibeli discussed a police operation linked to his company premises. He has also suggested that he has been under pressure for years, a claim that has intensified scrutiny and fueled speculation around what, exactly, is driving the conflict.
SAPS, however, drew a firm line on Tuesday. Police said the operation referenced online was directed by national structures and not KwaZulu-Natal police, insisting the provincial office had no role in it. In that context, officials argued, Mathibeli’s public framing of the incident as a local police campaign is misleading and inflammatory.
The dispute took a darker turn with allegations that Mathibeli accused Lt Gen Mkhwanazi of issuing an instruction that he should be shot and killed. SAPS described that claim as not only false, but dangerous, saying it crosses a line from criticism into serious, image-damaging accusations.
According to SAPS, Mathibeli also claimed KwaZulu-Natal police were “captured” by his competitors and portrayed policing as a “get rich quick scheme.” Police said those remarks were reckless and unsupported, and warned that such statements risk undermining community confidence at a time when rebuilding trust remains a major focus.
In unusually pointed language, SAPS said Mathibeli appears fixated on KwaZulu-Natal police and on the provincial commissioner in particular. Officials said his public comments effectively drew attention to his business activities, adding that police have since learned he is a beneficiary of a tender linked to the Gauteng Department of Health.
SAPS said it would now “give him the attention he is seeking” by pursuing legal steps and by moving forward with investigations. The message was clear. Police say they will not allow what they see as a smear campaign to go unanswered, and they intend to respond with both legal and investigative measures.
The clash is unfolding at a moment when policing, corruption claims, and public accountability are already under intense spotlight across South Africa. That wider environment makes the dispute feel heavier than a typical war of words. It is not just about two names trading accusations. It is also about how public institutions defend their credibility, and how powerful figures choose to challenge them.
For now, the focus remains on Mathibeli’s allegations and SAPS KwaZulu-Natal’s decision to pursue legal action. With tensions now openly on display, the next steps could turn this public dispute into a drawn-out legal and reputational fight, one that may only intensify in the days ahead.

]]>Durban businessman Calvin Mathibeli, founder of the Calvin and Family Group, says he is being deliberately targeted ahead of his expected appearance at the Madlanga Commission, after police raided his offices in Umhlanga on Friday.
Mathibeli, whose business interests include Calvin and Family Security Services, believes the operation was designed to rattle him, stain his name in public, and weaken his position before he gives evidence. Police have not publicly set out the full details of the search, including what exactly they were looking for, whether anything was seized, or whether charges are being considered.

On Monday morning, Mathibeli penned a strongly worded letter in which he claimed police in KwaZulu-Natal were acting with a mandate to intimidate him before his commission appearance. He said he was “fully aware of the plans being orchestrated against” him, and alleged there were repeated attempts to pressure him and damage his reputation.
In the letter, Mathibeli also suggested there were efforts to frame him through a narrative that could justify harsh action against him. He insisted he would not be bullied “in the name of policing,” and said he was prepared to clear his name, no matter how long the fight takes.
This was not the first time Mathibeli’s offices have faced a police search. He said Friday’s operation was the second such raid, following a previous search at his Fourways offices in Johannesburg last year.
Those developments have intensified attention around him, especially as his name and business interests continue to surface in connection with matters being discussed publicly around the commission. However, the precise legal basis for the most recent raid has not yet been fully explained in public.
Mathibeli leads a group that operates in the private security sector through Calvin and Family Security Services. He says the company employs more than 5,400 people across South Africa and holds contracts with major entities, including Rand Water among others.
His profile has also grown because of the wider controversy and tension surrounding the Madlanga Commission, where allegations and counter-allegations have increasingly spilled into the public arena, turning testimony and claims into real-world legal and reputational battles.
Mathibeli’s expected appearance at the Madlanga Commission is now likely to attract even sharper scrutiny, not only because of what he may say, but because of the climate surrounding his testimony. For now, he maintains the raids form part of an intimidation campaign, while police have not issued a detailed response directly addressing his accusations.
As the commission process continues, the key questions will be whether investigators clarify the purpose and scope of these searches, and whether Mathibeli’s claims of being targeted can be substantiated. Until then, the story sits in a tense space, part legal process, part public spectacle, and deeply personal for a man who says he refuses to back down.

Addressing the final day of a three-day Strategic Planning Session in KwaZulu-Natal, Mkhwanazi reflected on setbacks since 2021, including unrest, elections and devastating floods, but noted that crime levels are now showing signs of improvement and the province is moving closer to a clean audit.
He stressed that managers must ensure public funds are used correctly and said real progress will ultimately be measured by how communities perceive police services.
Mkhwanazi welcomed positive feedback on monthly community meetings led by station commanders and encouraged robust engagement as leaders work on the Annual Operational Plan.
Senior police management, labour unions, Community Policing Forums and youth crime structures attended the session.

]]>Durban based businessmam Calvin Mathibeli, founder of Calvin And Family group is accusing SAPS of misjustic.
In a statement sent to the media on Friday, Mathibeli claimed that there was an unlawful conduct from SAPS.
“Multple units of the SAPS inlawfully descended on my residence and offices in what appears to have been a coordinated operation premised on a fraudulent warrant of arrest.
“On 19 December 2025 at approximately 08:32, SAPS members, some with their faces concealed arrived at one of our Chairman’s properties in La Lucia. The officers claimed they were acting on
instructions from the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner and stated that they were there to arrest me,” he said.
Mathibeli said the family member informed the officers that he no longer resides at that address, he
moved in April 2024.
‘”The officers eventually departed, leaving several vehicles parked outside the premises. Upon being advised that we no longer resides at the La Lucia address, SAPS members
proceeded to my business premises at Durban North. There, they stopped, intimidated and verbally abused my wife. She was subjected to insults and derogatory language, including being called “ukhumula amasimba”, despite explaining that her husband was in Gauteng,” he said.

KwaZulu-Natal police say the men were wanted in connection with a string of violent crimes — including the cold-blooded murder of a 66-year-old man, his wife, and two police officers.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, intelligence led officers to the suspects’ vehicle along Mophela’s main road. But when police tried to pull them over, the suspects didn’t surrender — they started shooting.
“Officers returned fire, and during the exchange, all five suspects were fatally wounded,” said Netshiunda.
Although a full search of their vehicle is still underway, officers have already recovered three firearms at the scene.
These men were not unknown to law enforcement.
Just last week, one of their alleged victims — a 66-year-old man — was gunned down at his home in Ekwandeni. That killing came just months after he survived a previous assassination attempt in January. Tragically, his wife was not so fortunate — she was shot and killed at the same residence in February.
Police also believe the same group may have been involved in the murder of two officers.
“This may just be the tip of the iceberg,” said Netshiunda. “Our investigation is ongoing, and we believe these suspects could be linked to other violent crimes in the province.”
As police continue to uncover more about the men’s alleged crimes, the community is left breathing a little easier — relieved that a violent chapter may finally have come to a close.
