A candlelight vigil took place on Thursday to remember Elifas Malusi Rathebe, affectionately known as “Mdululu,” who was shot dead outside his home in Zone 3 earlier this month. Patrollers from across Diepkloof gathered to show solidarity and mourn a man many saw as a dedicated protector of the community.

But the mood turned somber and tense when two police officers expected to attend the event failed to show up—despite being on the program to speak. For many in attendance, their absence felt like a betrayal.

“It’s disturbing,” said one of the organisers. “We are doing work on the ground, unpaid and at risk, and yet we’re ignored.”

Patrollers say the bond between them and local law enforcement has become dangerously thin. They feel unsupported and unacknowledged, even though their presence in the streets often fills the gaps left by the police.

The tension isn’t limited to law enforcement. Relations between the patrollers and the local CPF leadership have reportedly soured too. Documents needed to raise funeral donations for Rathebe were allegedly withheld by the CPF executive, forcing patrollers to seek help from businesses without official letters.

Still, the community showed up. Independent patroller groups like Siyabangena—who operate outside the CPF—stood in solidarity and helped rally support. “We’ll carry on without the backing. We’re used to it,” said one of the patrollers.

The murder of Rathebe has not only sparked grief but has heightened fears among patrollers who work without protective gear, formal training, or proper tools. Most carry only pepper spray or a walkie-talkie—some just a sjambok—while facing criminals with firearms.

“There’s no parent who wouldn’t be terrified sending their child into that,” said a young full-time patroller. “But we still go out every night.”

In the wake of the memorial, patrollers are planning a march to the local police station. Their message is clear: they want recognition, respect, and answers.

They’ve also reached out to the provincial department of community safety, hoping for assistance with funeral costs. While documents have been submitted, it’s unclear whether support will arrive in time.

For now, these ground-level defenders say they will continue patrolling their neighborhoods, committed to their cause—whether official structures support them or not.

The suspect, Lesiba Ledwaba, is facing serious charges in connection with the murder of his mother, Raesibe Ledwaba. During his court appearance, the courtroom was filled with shocked family members and community residents, many struggling to come to terms with the gruesome nature of the crime.

Relatives say the accused had previously shown abusive behavior toward the victim, though she never pressed charges against her son. Her niece, Ramokone Mothapo, expressed deep grief and called for the harshest possible punishment, saying the family was devastated and overwhelmed by unanswered questions.

“We are broken,” she said. “No one deserves such a horrific end. We’re calling for life imprisonment. Our family is in deep pain and we don’t even know how to move forward with funeral plans.”

Four Lesotho nationals, Ntisa Mothetho (34), Nthoba David Halahala (35), Molupe Meshack Sekati (36) and Mkhate Clovis Mpholo (36), accused of killing a police officer in Ficksburg who previously Abondoned Bail has now decided to apply for bail

All four are set to appear before the Ficksburg Magistrates’ Court on 8 July 2025. In their last court appearance one of the attorneys withdrew from representing one of the accused and at present new attorney to appear for the other accused.

All four were arrested on 01 February 2025 in connection with the killing of a Free State police officer, Constable Rethabile Justice Sephooa who was attached at Ficksburg Crime Intelligence Unit.

According to an earlier reports by the Free State Hawks Spokesperson Fikizwa Matlto the four Lesotho nationals who are in South Africa illegally were arrested by Free State multidisciplinary team led by Hawks’ Serious Organized Crime Investigation together with the North West Tactical Response Team (TRT) and the National Intervention Unit (NIU), after an intense investigation was launched to trace the suspects.

They were located and arrested in Stilfontein, North West, then transferred to Bethlehem.

On 21 January 2025, two unknown African males arrived at the police officer’s place of residence, where one of them shot at the officer two times then both fled the scene.

The National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Lt General (Dr/ Adv) SG Lebeya appreciated the collective effort and the professional approach applied by the team on ensuring the perpetrators are brought forward to face the arm of the law.

Free State and Northern Cape NPA Regional Spokesperson Mojalefa Senokotsoane said while the matter is still in the district court the case will be sent to the DPP for a decision on where the matter will be trialed (High Court or Regional Court). The state indicated that they will oppose bail at all costs.

Roy Jankielsohn Democratic Alliance spokesperson on Agriculture in the Free State Legislature said besides the theft of cattle farm equipment, vehicles and criminal syndicates who use the porous border to distribute illicit goods, the senseless maiming and killing of livestock puts this criminal activity on a different level.

The most recent being an attack on a farm on the Lesotho border near Wepener, where 18 cattle, including 13 cows and 5 calves, were slaughtered, and another 11 cattle were seriously injured after being stabbed with spears.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has a Rural Safety Policy that includes improved intelligence, the use of technology and improved visible policing along the border to curb such crimes.

What also needs to be done is agreements between the South African and Lesotho governments to allow for combined hot pursuit operations when cross-border crimes take place. The DA notes and welcomes the 20-year sentence handed down to perpetrators of a brutal attack on Mimie Jacobs in 2020. Besides crime prevention, harsh penalties for such crimes are an important deterrent for would-be criminals, and while we welcome this sentence, conviction rates for rural crimes remain unacceptably low due to a dysfunctional criminal justice system.

Farm attacks and theft affect food security and the livelihoods of subsistence, emerging and commercial farmers, whom the DA regards as national assets. The DA in the Free State hopes that the Free State Community policing bill will contribute towards better policing in the Free State and greater oversight over and accountability of the SAPS by the relevant MEC and the provincial legislature.
