According to police report, on Thursday night, police received a complaint that a person had been murdered at the Khlamtwna informal settlement.

“Police attended the scene and met a woman who identified herself as the deceased’s girlfriend. She indicated that she had received information that her boyfriend had been murdered and left in nearby bushes. Upon arrival at the scene, police noticed flames, indicating that something was burning.

“A naked male body was found lying on the ground with both hands tied behind his back, and the body had been set alight. During preliminary investigations, the deceased’s girlfriend indicated that the victim had allegedly been forcefully apprehended by a group of unknown community members after being accused of stealing their cattle,” read the report.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Ryno Naidoo, condemned the incident and warned community members against taking the law into their own hands.

He urged residents to report suspected criminal activities to the police so that such matters can be dealt with through proper legal processes.

Police investigations are continuing, and no arrests have been made at this stage.

A 33-year-old man from Driefontein village in Sekhukhune, Limpopo, miraculously escaped from four armed men who kidnapped him from his home late at night. The ordeal unfolded around 11:30 pm on Tuesday in the Matlelerekeng area.

The victim was in his shack with his wife and child when the intruders burst in. Two of them were carrying guns, and they forced him into a silver-grey Honda sedan. His wife and child managed to get away safely, but he was driven off while being beaten repeatedly with a firearm.

The kidnappers stopped the car at Koedoespoort in Mpumalanga, giving the man a chance to break free. He navigated through remote paths and made it back home around 3 am on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, where he quickly reported the incident to the police.

Authorities have opened a kidnapping case, now handled by the Provincial Organised Crime Unit. The reason behind the abduction is still unclear and under investigation.

Anyone with tips that could help catch the suspects is encouraged to reach out to Sergeant Ronny Hlakole at 076 998 7004, Crime Stop at 08600 10111, the nearest police station, or via the My SAPS App.

A Bloemfontein police officer who allegedly kidnapped a Martie du Plessis Special School learner is due back in the local magistrate’s court early next year Sgt Nzima Adoons his case was postponed to Friday, 16 January, for final investigations. He is facing charges of extortion and the kidnapping of Kamogelo Baukudi, 19.

Adoons was granted bail of R2,000 in July, with strict conditions. He may not interfere with the investigation or intimidate state witnesses. He must also report to his nearest police station every Friday and Sunday.

Kamogelo was allegedly kidnapped after school in June by men who impersonated police officers. After the learner was picked up by a driver working for one of his parents in a Suzuki, the alleged kidnappers followed and stopped them near Vereeniging Drive.

Daniel Malebatso, the driver, alleges he heard a siren behind them and the occupants of a white Toyota Hilux double-cab bakkie, fitted with blue “police lights”, pulled them over.

Kamogelo and Malebatso were separated, and Malebatso was told to drive ahead to the Park Road police station while they would follow with Kamogelo. The Toyota Hilux, however, vanished from sight when a truck passed between the Suzuki and the Hilux.

“The matter of Nzima Adoons has been postponed to January for further investigation,” said Free State NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane. “He is facing charges of extortion, as well as kidnapping, and he is out on bail.”

Adoons was linked to the case by the tracker of the vehicle he drove on the day that Kamogelo was kidnapped. This was revealed by investigating officer Lt. Col. Kelaotswe Lebodi when he testified.

Lebodi testified in October that the vehicle tracker apparently placed him at the exact location where Kamogelo was last seen. Five other suspects were arrested in connection with the kidnapping: three at a house in Kanana, Wepener, and two others on the road between Kwetla and Wepener with the victim in their company.

Fifty of the 315 children kidnapped from St Mary’s Catholic School in Niger State on Friday have managed to escape, bringing a moment of relief to families anxiously waiting for news. They have since been reunited with their parents, according to local Christian leaders.

A major security operation involving the military, police, and community vigilantes is underway to locate the remaining 265 children and 12 teachers still missing. The search now stretches across forests and remote routes believed to have been used by the gunmen.

The attack prompted authorities in several states to order immediate school closures, including in Kebbi, Niger, Katsina, Yobe, and Kwara. This came after another incident in Kebbi earlier in the week, where 25 pupils were taken from a boarding school.

President Bola Tinubu has responded by authorizing the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers and redeploying officers previously assigned to VIP protection back to core security duties, especially in areas vulnerable to attacks.

Families in Papiri village, where St Mary’s is located, say they feel abandoned as they wait for updates. Many expected a stronger security presence following the abduction, but residents say no additional forces have arrived.

The escape of the 50 children took place between Friday and Saturday and is being described as a courageous and risky effort to break free from their captors. The mass kidnapping is one of the largest in Nigeria’s history, surpassing even the Chibok school abduction of 2014.

Local officials say armed men entered the school around 2am on Friday. The Niger State governor ordered schools in the area to shut down, urging the public to remain focused on rescue efforts rather than blame.

Parents shared heartbreaking stories of fear and uncertainty. One mother said her nieces, aged six and 13, were among those taken, pleading for their safe return. Another parent whose children were spared described the attack as devastating for the entire community.

Authorities say St Mary’s School had been warned to close its boarding facilities due to intelligence reports of heightened risk. The school has yet to respond to those claims.

Elsewhere in Nigeria, similar incidents were reported last week. More than 20 girls were kidnapped from a school in Kebbi, and 14 farmers were taken in Borno, where one woman was later rescued. In Kwara State, 38 people abducted from a church service were freed, though two people were killed during the attack.

The rise in kidnappings has intensified national frustration. While some international voices have framed the violence as targeting Christians, Nigerian officials say the attackers pose a threat to everyone—Muslims, Christians, and those of no faith—emphasizing that the motives often involve criminal profit or local resource disputes rather than religion.

Nigeria continues to battle long-running insecurity, including attacks by armed groups in the north-east and communal clashes in central regions. The government maintains that it is working to restore safety across affected areas, but many families remain in anguish as the search for hundreds of children continues.

Nigeria is reeling after one of the largest school abductions in the nation’s history, as more than 300 children and staff were taken by armed men from a Catholic boarding school in Niger State.

The Christian Association of Nigeria confirmed that 303 students and 12 teachers were kidnapped from St Mary’s School in Papiri. The updated numbers came after officials completed a detailed verification of those missing. The scale of the attack surpasses the 2014 Chibok school abduction, which had long stood as one of the darkest moments in the country’s history.

According to local authorities, the attackers stormed the school around 2:00am on Friday, seizing students who were sleeping on the premises. Families have been left devastated, many clinging to hope as rescue efforts continue.

Dominic Adamu, whose daughters attend the school, described the shock gripping the community. “Everybody is weak… it took everybody by surprise,” he said. Another distraught woman shared that her nieces—just six and thirteen years old—were among those taken. “I just want them to come home,” she pleaded.

Security operatives are combing nearby forests in an effort to track the kidnappers and rescue the victims. In response, all schools in Niger State have been ordered to shut down.

Authorities revealed that the school had been previously instructed to close its boarding facilities due to intelligence pointing to increased risks of attacks. They say the decision to remain open exposed both students and staff to danger, though the school has not responded to the claim.

Kidnappings for ransom by armed groups—often referred to as bandits—remain a persistent threat across several parts of Nigeria. While ransom payments have been outlawed, the measure has done little to deter the criminal networks responsible for these attacks.

This latest abduction is the third major attack on educational and religious institutions within one week. In Kebbi State, more than 20 schoolgirls were kidnapped earlier in the week. In Kwara State, a church attack left two people dead and dozens abducted.

The rising insecurity has intensified frustration among Nigerians, many of whom are demanding stronger protection for children, schools, and communities. The urgency of the situation also led President Bola Tinubu to postpone planned foreign trips so he could directly address the growing crisis.

The tragedy unfolds amid international debates about religious persecution in Nigeria. Some political figures abroad have alleged that Christians are being specifically targeted, but Nigerian authorities insist that attacks cut across religious lines. They emphasise that criminal groups and extremist militants target Muslims, Christians, and others alike—motivated by ideology, revenge, or competition over resources rather than religion alone.

Northern Nigeria continues to grapple with insurgency, banditry, and farmer–herder conflicts, each contributing to a complex and long-standing security challenge. The memory of the 2014 Chibok abduction still lingers, with around 100 girls still unaccounted for more than a decade later.

As communities wait anxiously for news, the nation hopes that the children and staff of St Mary’s School will be safely returned.

Before sunrise on Monday, armed men stormed the school hostel, killing a staff member and taking 25 schoolgirls from their dormitories in Maga, Danko-Wasagu area. The attack left the entire community shaken.

Aisha Sani, whose two daughters were taken, says the moment she learned the truth broke her completely:

“Our two girls have been kidnapped. One is in SS3 and the other in SS2. We heard a gunshot in the night but assumed it was the security team. It wasn’t until morning that we discovered the heartbreaking truth.”

For another parent, Usman Muhammad, the fear goes beyond the abduction. He worries that no one will feel safe to send their children back to school unless strong security measures are put in place:

“No child will return unless adequate security is provided. Parents are already saying they won’t risk it again.”

The school’s principal, Hajia Rabi Musa Magaji, tried to comfort the families, saying that authorities are fully involved:

“Everyone who should be here is here. They have assured us that the girls will be rescued, and we believe it will happen soon.”

Incidents like this bring back painful memories of the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction, which left a permanent scar on many Nigerian families. Despite improvements in security, parents continue to live with the fear that their children are not safe at school.

One of the 25 schoolgirls kidnapped from their dormitory in Kebbi State, northwestern Nigeria, has managed to escape and return home safely.

The girls were taken in the early hours of Monday when armed men stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School. During the attack, a school staff member was killed, and the gunmen fled with the students.

According to the school principal, the escaped student trekked through surrounding forests before reaching home late Monday, only hours after the terrifying abduction. Another student, who was not part of the 25 officially listed as abducted, also managed to escape shortly after the attack.

“They are safe and sound,” the principal confirmed, expressing relief amid ongoing fear and uncertainty.

Mass abductions of students have become a recurring tragedy in northern Nigeria, where armed gangs—ranging from bandits to extremist factions—target schools to draw attention and demand ransom. These groups often operate in remote areas, taking advantage of limited security presence.

While no group has claimed responsibility for this attack, residents and analysts believe it is the work of one of the many gangs known for kidnapping students, villagers, and travelers. Many of these armed groups include former herders involved in long-running clashes over land and resources.

The persistent insecurity has been linked to corruption, lack of accountability for attackers, weak security resources, and porous borders that allow for the easy flow of weapons.

For now, families and communities in Kebbi continue to wait and hope for the safe return of the remaining abducted schoolgirls.

The Bauchi State Police Command has rescued two kidnapped victims and arrested two suspects believed to be involved in the abduction.

According to the command, the incident occurred on October 25, 2025, when five armed men invaded the home of 32-year-old Stanley Abuchi in Wuntin Dada, Bauchi. When they couldn’t find him, the kidnappers abducted his girlfriend, 23-year-old Joy Stanley, and his friend, 24-year-old Adam Bala.

Acting swiftly after the report, detectives from the “B” Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, intercepted the suspects in a red Mercedes-Benz along Gidan Mai Jos Road. One of the suspects, 32-year-old Abubakar Musa from Jos, was apprehended, and both victims were rescued unharmed.

Investigations revealed that the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of ₦400,000 from their target and had taken personal belongings worth about ₦60,000 from the victims.

Further police efforts led to the arrest of another suspect, 31-year-old Dahiru Umar from Yandoya in Jos, on October 27, 2025. Officers also recovered a handcuff believed to be part of the evidence.

The police are still searching for three more suspects identified as Ibrahim Hassan (also known as B13), Pigo, and another man named Musa.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani Omolori Aliyu, commended the swift action of the officers and directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.

The man, originally from Mozambique, confessed to the crimes, including violating immigration laws. Amantle’s body was discovered in his shack in Orlando, Soweto, in October last year — a discovery that left the community shaken and grieving.

During recent court proceedings, Amantle’s mother bravely shared the devastating impact of her daughter’s death on their family. Fighting back tears, she pleaded with the court to impose at least three life sentences, saying no punishment could ever truly match the pain of losing her child.

Today’s sentencing will bring an end to a case that has horrified many and reopened deep conversations about violence against children in South Africa. Families, neighbors, and child safety advocates are expected to follow the proceedings closely, hoping justice will bring some measure of healing.

Police in the Eastern Cape have arrested three suspects in connection with the kidnapping of a 62-year-old woman in Gqeberha. She was abducted on August 20 while driving home from work.

According to authorities, a specialised kidnapping task team, working with private security partners, tracked down the suspects and secured the woman’s release. She was found to be in good health and safely reunited with her family.

This latest case is part of a worrying spike in kidnappings in the metro. Earlier this month, a 73-year-old woman was taken from outside her home in Kariega and held for a week before being released. In a separate incident, a 47-year-old man was abducted in Neave Township but freed the following day in Motherwell.

Police say the arrests highlight progress in tackling a trend of ransom kidnappings that have increasingly targeted businesspeople, shopkeepers, tourists, and even construction firms in the province.
