A Bloemfontein police officer who allegedly kidnapped a Martie du Plessis Special School learner is due back in the local magistrate’s court early next year Sgt Nzima Adoons his case was postponed to Friday, 16 January, for final investigations. He is facing charges of extortion and the kidnapping of Kamogelo Baukudi, 19.

Adoons was granted bail of R2,000 in July, with strict conditions. He may not interfere with the investigation or intimidate state witnesses. He must also report to his nearest police station every Friday and Sunday.

Kamogelo was allegedly kidnapped after school in June by men who impersonated police officers. After the learner was picked up by a driver working for one of his parents in a Suzuki, the alleged kidnappers followed and stopped them near Vereeniging Drive.

Daniel Malebatso, the driver, alleges he heard a siren behind them and the occupants of a white Toyota Hilux double-cab bakkie, fitted with blue “police lights”, pulled them over.

Kamogelo and Malebatso were separated, and Malebatso was told to drive ahead to the Park Road police station while they would follow with Kamogelo. The Toyota Hilux, however, vanished from sight when a truck passed between the Suzuki and the Hilux.

“The matter of Nzima Adoons has been postponed to January for further investigation,” said Free State NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane. “He is facing charges of extortion, as well as kidnapping, and he is out on bail.”

Adoons was linked to the case by the tracker of the vehicle he drove on the day that Kamogelo was kidnapped. This was revealed by investigating officer Lt. Col. Kelaotswe Lebodi when he testified.

Lebodi testified in October that the vehicle tracker apparently placed him at the exact location where Kamogelo was last seen. Five other suspects were arrested in connection with the kidnapping: three at a house in Kanana, Wepener, and two others on the road between Kwetla and Wepener with the victim in their company.

The legal proceedings in the kidnapping case of 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi have hit a minor hurdle. A 42-year-old police officer, Nzima Adoons, was expected to appear in court alongside five others accused in connection with the teenager’s abduction. However, the case has been temporarily delayed.

Authorities revealed that investigations are still ongoing and have yet to firmly connect the five men to the kidnapping and extortion charges. As a result, the court has not yet proceeded with enrolling the case against them. Adoons remains in custody and is scheduled for another court appearance on July 3, when his bail application will be revisited.

Prior to the proceedings, the Free State police confirmed that due to the severity of the charges, the case classification was elevated from Schedule 1 to Schedule 5. This suggests a more serious offense and potentially tougher bail conditions.

Kamogelo was kidnapped last month while being driven home from his special needs school, Martie du Plesis, in Bloemfontein. The abductors reportedly posed as police officers during the incident. Just days before his rescue, the suspects demanded a R7 million ransom.

Thanks to an extensive police operation, Kamogelo was eventually found alive in Wepener, Free State. Three of the suspects were arrested at a house in the Kanana area, while the remaining two were apprehended on the road nearby—with the victim still in their custody.

In total, six individuals have now been arrested in connection with the case. Authorities believe more arrests may follow as the investigation continues.

Kamogelo has since been safely reunited with his family.

Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae congratulates members of the South African Police Service for the safe rescue of Kamogelo Baukudi in the early hours of Friday, 27 June 2025.

The 19-year-old Grade 11 pupil at Martie du Plessis High School was abducted on 5 June 2025 while being driven home from school. Following his abduction, police launched a massive manhunt which led to the arrest of a police officer who was charged with kidnapping and extortion.

In the early hours of Friday, 27 June 2025, police were led to Wepener where Kamogelo was found unharmed. Five suspects, aged between 20 and 29, were arrested, bringing the total number of suspects to six.

Premier Letsoha-Mathae has thanked members of the police who have been working around the clock to bring Baukudi safely home. She said the rescue of Baukudi was a demonstration of their meticulous work and dedication to bringing a peaceful ending to a rather worrying incident.

The Premier also said she was mortified to learn that some of the suspects were almost the same age as Baukudi. She said this was a worrying indication of the prevalence of crime in the province, but added that the police were equal to the task of stopping criminals in their tracks.

Premier Letsoha-Mathae said she was always optimistic that the young man would be alive, owing it to paternal instincts.

The Premier further appealed to the public to allow the police space to complete their investigation to determine what happened, and to ensure the successful prosecution of the suspects.

“We are all incredibly relieved that Kamogelo Baukudi has been found unharmed. We thank the South African Police Service, under the capable leadership of Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, for a job well done. The boy has been reunited with his family and we hope that he will quickly put this incident behind him and continue with his studies,” Premier Letsoha-Mathae said.

The South African Police Service in the Free State confirms a major breakthrough in the kidnapping case of Kamogelo Baukudi (19), a Grade 11 learner from Martie du Plessis School, who was found alive in Wepener following a coordinated rescue operation.

Kamogelo was abducted on Thursday, 5 June 2025, while driven home from school in Verneeniging Drive, Bloemfontein. His disappearance triggered widespread concern and led to the establishment of a dedicated multidisciplinary task team under the leadership of the Mangaung Metro District Commissioner, Major General Arthur Peter Adams.

After weeks of intensive investigation, Kamogelo was safely located and rescued in Wepener in the early hours of this morning, 27 June 2025. During this intelligence driven operation, five African males aged between 20 and 29 were arrested. Three suspects were apprehended at a house in Kanana Location, Wepener, while two others were caught on the road between Kwetla Location and Wepener town — with the victim in their possession.

This brings the total number of arrests in the case to six.

The first suspect, a 42-year-old police sergeant, who was previously arrested, appeared in court charged with kidnapping and extortion.

Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, Provincial Commissioner of the Free State, commended the hard work of this team:

The safe recovery of young Kamogelo is a moment of great relief for the family, the community, and all of us. I commend our members for their unwavering efforts, who worked tirelessly following up every lead under serious public scrutiny. We will ensure that justice is served.”

The suspects face charges related to kidnapping, extortion. They will join the police sergeant in court on Monday 30 June 2025. The investigation continues.

Baukudi was separated from his driver and instructed to travel with what he innocently believed were police officers. He has not been seen since Thursday and a massive manhunt is currently underway for both the 19 year-old Baukudi and the suspects.

Speaking at a prayer service at the school on Friday evening, Premier Letsoha-Mathae said she was hopeful that Baukudi will be found alive.

“We are here because we are concerned parents and are with you in prayer during this time. The police are working hard to find Kamogelo and I want to ask you all not to lose hope. I am hopeful that he will be found alive,” said Premier Letsoha-Mathae.

MEC Jabu Mbalula, who had accompanied the Premier, said he was concerned about incidents of crime in the province, but assured those in attendance that the police were working around the clock to address criminality.

“Learning institutions must be safe places where children must be allowed to study without having to worry about criminal activity. I have faith in our police and I know that they have the capacity to solve this case. No evil can triumph over peace,” MEC Mbalula concluded.

A Search Task Team is currently out in the streets looking for 19 year old Kamogelo Baukudi, who was kidnapped by two males impersonating the police earlier yesterday, Thursday 5 June 2025 at about 11:55.

The complainant, Daniel Malebatso, arrived at Marti Du Plessis School in Fitchardpark as usual to fetch Kamogelo Baukudi who is a Grade 11 learner at the school. The two left school premises with Kamogelo driving the Suzuki Ertiga.

Whilst driving along Vereeniging Drive Erlichpark Extension, Daniel alleges that they heard a siren sound from behind, and they were pulled over by a White Toyota Hilux GD-6 Double Cab. Inside the Toyota Hilux, there were two unknown male persons; one wearing police uniform and the other Blue tracksuits.

According to the complainant, the suspects bakkie was fitted with blue lights on the grill and what looked like a police radio inside. The suspect wearing police uniform confronted Daniel Malebatso and informed him that the Suzuki Ertiga they were driving in together with Kamogelo was suspected of delivering drugs. The suspects then separated Daniel and Kamogelo and instructed Daniel to drive at the front whilst they followed from behind to Park Road Police Station.

Both vehicles turned back and drove in westerly direction in Vereeniging Drive. Daniel alleges that a truck went in-between the Suzuki he was driving and the Toyota Hilux and he never saw it again. Daniel recalls that one of the suspects was speaking Sesotho fluently and even mentioned the name “Thipe”. The cellular telephones of both Daniel and Kamogelo were found under the bridge on Ferrera Road.

A case docket of Kidnapping and Impersonating the police was opened at Parkweg Police Station. Any member of the public who might have information that can help the police to find Kamogelo Baukudi; and might have seen the vehicles while in Vereeniging Drive is requested to contact Captain Sabata Jafta Moseme at 082 5262 713. Alternatively the information can be submitted on MySAPS App or call the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
