In a dramatic moment inside the court, the judge made it clear that he does not have the authority to simply “fire” the interpreter unless there is evidence of contempt of court or misconduct.

The judge stated:

“It has never happened in South Africa… where litigants are unhappy about the conduct of a fellow employee.”

He further stressed that the interpreter also has constitutional rights and labour protections, saying:

“He’s got human rights… he’s a member of a union.”

The court has now been adjourned until tomorrow while the judge consults the Chief Justice for direction on the unprecedented dispute.
