Washington says move is temporary and aimed at restoring stability and democratic governance

US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will temporarily oversee Venezuela’s administration following the reported capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by US military forces.

Speaking from Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump said the intervention was designed to ensure a controlled and peaceful transition of power after years of political and economic instability in the South American nation.

“We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition,” Trump told reporters. “We want peace, liberty, and justice for the great people of Venezuela.”

Temporary Oversight, Not Permanent Rule

Trump emphasised that the United States does not intend to install a rushed or imposed leadership, saying Washington wants to avoid creating further instability.

“This is not about replacing one problem with another,” he said. “It’s about creating conditions where Venezuelans can return home, rebuild their country, and choose their future freely.”

Millions of Venezuelans have fled the country in recent years amid economic collapse, political repression, and humanitarian shortages.

High-Level US Officials Present

The announcement was delivered in the presence of senior US officials, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

While no detailed timeline was provided, US officials said further information would be released regarding governance structures, security arrangements, and international engagement during the transition period.

International Reactions Anticipated

The announcement is expected to draw strong reactions from Latin American governments, global powers, and international organisations, particularly around questions of sovereignty and international law.

Analysts say the coming days will be critical in determining whether the move stabilises Venezuela or deepens regional tensions.

MDNtv will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.

Talks in Geneva between the United States and Ukraine have wrapped up with both sides saying they made progress, but many big questions remain unanswered — especially when it comes to Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the momentum but stressed that the biggest stumbling block is Russia’s demand that Ukraine legally recognize the territories Moscow currently occupies in the east. He warned that agreeing to this would undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and reward Russia for seizing land by force.

On social media, President Donald Trump hinted that “something good may be happening” but urged people not to believe anything until a real breakthrough is visible.

Russia was not part of the Geneva discussions, and the Kremlin said it had not received any updates. However, Moscow noted that it was aware changes had been made to the peace proposal previously shared with President Putin.

The earlier 28-point plan, drafted by the US and Russia, raised concerns in Kyiv and across Europe because it appeared to lean heavily toward Moscow’s long-standing demands.

Tensions rose last week after comments from Trump suggested Ukraine had only until Thursday to accept the proposal or risk losing key US support. The pressure pushed European capitals into rapid consultations and emergency diplomacy.

By Sunday evening, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said an impressive amount of progress had been made and that he believed the sides could reach a deal. But European leaders were more cautious. Poland’s Donald Tusk said he was unsure peace was any closer, and Germany’s Friedrich Merz warned that negotiations would likely be slow and difficult.

European countries quickly drafted a counter-proposal that rejects any recognition of Russian-held territories, increases Ukraine’s permitted army size, and leaves open the door to NATO membership. The Kremlin dismissed this version as unhelpful.

Russia continues to insist that Ukraine withdraw completely from the Donbas region — a demand Kyiv says would only invite future attacks. Zelensky has repeatedly argued that giving up any territory would endanger Ukraine long-term.

For now, the path forward is unclear. Zelensky is expected to speak directly with Trump soon, after which a revised peace plan may be sent to Moscow. Russia says there are currently no plans for its negotiators to meet US officials this week.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said more work is needed to secure a “just and lasting peace,” and announced that a virtual meeting of supportive countries would take place on Tuesday to coordinate next steps.

US President Donald Trump says he plans to take legal action against the BBC over an edited clip of his 6 January 2021 speech that appeared in a Panorama documentary. The BBC has apologised for the edit, saying it was unintentional, but it has refused to offer him any financial compensation.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said he intends to file a lawsuit seeking between $1bn and $5bn, likely sometime next week. He accused the broadcaster of altering his words, saying, “They cheated. They changed the words coming out of my mouth.”

The BBC acknowledged that the edit created the wrong impression — specifically, that Trump had issued a direct call for violence — but said the clip would not be broadcast again. The organisation apologised to Trump but stood firm that no compensation would be paid.

Trump told reporters he had not yet raised the issue with the UK prime minister, though he said he planned to speak with him over the weekend. As of Friday evening, no lawsuit had been officially filed.

A BBC spokesperson said there had been no further communication from Trump’s legal team and that the organisation’s position remained unchanged.

In a separate interview recorded earlier, Trump said he felt an “obligation” to sue, arguing that failing to act would allow similar incidents to happen to others. He described the edit as “egregious” and compared it to a previous dispute he had with another US media outlet.

The Panorama programme at the centre of the controversy featured a shortened sequence of his 2021 speech. Critics said it falsely connected lines that were spoken more than 50 minutes apart. The backlash led to the resignation of the BBC’s director general and its head of news.

In its official clarification, the BBC admitted the edit unintentionally made it appear as if Trump had made a continuous call to action, when in fact it was a combination of separate excerpts. The broadcaster insisted it never intended to mislead and strongly disputed any basis for a defamation claim.

BBC lawyers outlined several reasons they believe Trump has no case, including that the programme was not broadcast in the US, was only available to UK viewers, did not harm Trump’s political prospects, and was not edited with malice. They also noted that political speech is heavily protected under US law.

The issue widened further after a second similar edit from a different BBC programme, aired years earlier, came to light.
