]]>Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos officially confirmed his final 26-man squad during a special event at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where President Cyril Ramaphosa hosted the national team ahead of their departure to Mexico City.
While the announcement brought celebration for some players, it also marked heartbreak for others after Broos trimmed his preliminary 32-man squad down to the final group that will represent South Africa on football’s biggest stage.
Among the biggest talking points was the inclusion of veteran midfielder Themba Zwane, whose experience, calmness and leadership continue to make him one of the most respected figures in South African football.
Social media quickly erupted after the announcement, with supporters praising Zwane’s resilience and consistency. Many fans described his selection as emotional, especially considering this could be the midfielder’s final appearance at a FIFA World Cup.
Broos admitted the selection process was one of the toughest moments since taking over as Bafana coach, revealing that several players who contributed during qualification narrowly missed out on the final squad.
The players dropped from the preliminary group include Brandon Petersen, Thabiso Monyane, Lebohang Maboe, Broeklyn Poggenpoel and Patrick Maswanganyi. The omissions have already sparked fierce debate among supporters online.
Despite criticism from some fans over certain selections, Broos insists the final squad has the balance, discipline and mentality needed to compete against the world’s best nations.
South Africa returns to the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 16 years, making the moment even more historic for both players and supporters.
For Zwane, however, the tournament means something even deeper. After years of serving South African football with consistency and class, the veteran midfielder now has one final opportunity to shine on the biggest stage of all.

]]>The Belgian mentor is expected to announce his final 26-man squad on May 27, but already admits the selection process has become one of the toughest tasks of his coaching career.
Broos explained that drawing up the initial list of 50 players was simple, but reducing the squad has now become extremely difficult as competition for places intensifies.
“It’s an exciting time for me because a few weeks ago, we made a list of 50 players. That was easy because picking 50 players is easy,” said Broos.
“But choosing the players who must report for camp on Monday was more difficult. The hardest part will be next week when we announce the final 26-man squad.”
The experienced coach warned that not every player will walk away satisfied once the final list is revealed.
“I am sure there will be players who will not be happy. There will be players who will be very disappointed. But those are the decisions I have to make,” he added.
Broos, however, says he remains confident that he and assistant coach Helman Mkhalele will make the correct choices for the national team.
“I have a good assistant in Helman. On Monday and Tuesday, we will continue with meetings to make sure we select the right players,” said Broos.
South Africans now wait anxiously as the countdown to the final World Cup squad announcement continues.
