The US has seen more than 1,100 measles cases this year already. It’s a scary number that’s got people worried about what’s coming next.

Out of every 1,000 kids who catch measles, one might get a serious brain swelling. Up to three could even die from it.

This year is shaping up to be another bad one for measles. In the first eight weeks alone, over 1,100 cases were reported – that’s six times more than what’s normal for a whole year.

It’s really disappointing because there’s a safe vaccine that works great against measles and its nasty side effects.

Measles is no joke – it can hit any healthy kid hard.

But almost all the cases so far – about 96% – are in people who aren’t fully vaccinated. Over 80% are in kids and teens, with one in four under age five.

Last year, there were nearly 2,300 cases – the most in over 30 years, way more than any year since it was thought to be gone in 2000.

Three people died last year: two kids and one adult, all unvaccinated.

That’s about the expected rate of one to three deaths per 1,000 cases. So yeah, more deaths are likely on the way.

It’s heartbreaking. When folks skip vaccines, you get more sickness, more hospital stays, and more deaths. Kids are dying from something that’s totally preventable because parents are more scared of the vaccine than the disease itself.

More than half the states have had cases this year, with at least three big outbreaks still growing.

A huge outbreak up in one area has racked up at least 985 cases since October.

It’s in a spot where not many people are vaccinated. Almost all cases over 93% are in unvaccinated folks.

No deaths yet, but there have been bad complications like lung infections and brain issues that can cause deafness or other long-term problems. Some pregnant women needed special treatment after getting exposed.

Nearly 17,000 vaccines were given out in January, even using mobile units to reach more people.

These steps are to cut down on spread and keep everyone safe, especially in busy spots like hospitals.

New cases have slowed down lately down to under two dozen last week from a peak of nearly 250 in mid-January.

This slowdown came a bit earlier than expected, thanks to quick work spotting cases, warning people, and getting folks quarantined.

Boosting vaccinations has helped too. January was one of the best months for shots in years. But there’s still more to do to get everyone covered.

The outbreak isn’t over, there are still pockets of people who aren’t protected, which could keep it going.

Staff are working hard on tracking contacts and managing data.

They’re also getting extra help to analyze everything and learn how to stop it better.

And measles is still spreading strong in other areas.

Cases have popped up in several states linked to this outbreak, like some with 23 cases since December – more than five times what they’ve seen in the last decade.

Outbreaks in other regions are ongoing too, with hundreds of cases since summer in some spots.

A newer one along the coast has exploded to at least 83 cases in the past month.

It’s centered around a college in a close community. Most cases seem to be students, but details on ages or vaccination status aren’t out there.

While kids make up most recent cases, adults can get hit just as hard or worse, especially with lung problems.

The older you are when you catch it, the tougher it can be.

Vaccine doubts have grown, putting more young kids at risk.

Measles is a tough virus.

Talk to your doctor about it the one who knows you and your family best. Have that chat and really listen.

It was thought to be eliminated back in 2000, but ongoing spread is putting that at risk. There might be a decision soon on whether that status holds.

It’s heartbreaking to hear that four people have lost their lives, and three others needed liver transplants, after eating death cap mushrooms. These toxic fungi are popping up everywhere in California thanks to a wet winter, making foraging a risky business this year.

Experts are advising everyone to steer clear of picking wild mushrooms altogether because death caps look a lot like safe, edible ones. Since mid-November, over three dozen cases of poisoning have been reported, leading to those deaths and transplants. Many folks ended up with severe liver damage that hit fast, some even needing intensive care. The victims ranged from toddlers as young as 19 months to adults up to 67 years old.

Death caps are among the world’s deadliest mushrooms, packed with powerful toxins that cause most fatal mushroom poisonings globally. You’ll find them in city parks, forests, often under oak trees.

Usually, there are just a handful of these poisonings each year, but this season’s been way worse nearly 40 cases so far. The combo of warm fall weather and early rains has caused a massive surge in these mushrooms.

Even a tiny bite can kill you, and color isn’t a good clue for safety. Cooking, drying, or eating them raw doesn’t neutralize the poison.

One family in Northern California thought the mushrooms resembled ones they safely foraged back home. The parents ate them twice once fresh, then in soup and got terribly sick with vomiting, missing work. The mom spent days in the hospital, and the dad needed a liver transplant. Luckily, their kids skipped the mushrooms.

Symptoms can start with stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting within a day, and things can spiral quickly. Sometimes early signs fade, but liver failure can still kick in a couple days later.

These mushrooms have been spotted in parks across Northern and Central California, especially around Monterey and the Bay Area.

Many of those affected speak Spanish, Mixteco, or Mandarin, so warnings are going out in multiple languages. Over 60% of cases involved Spanish speakers.

Death caps mimic safe varieties from different parts of the world and change looks as they grow from brownish-white to greenish caps. Unless you’re a pro, it’s tough to tell them apart.

Kids have been hit too, so keep an eye on little ones and pets outdoors where mushrooms grow. Stick to buying from stores or trusted sellers.

If you think you’ve eaten a bad mushroom, get medical help right away treatment’s harder once symptoms ramp up.

Nationwide, mushroom exposures of all kinds jumped 40% from September to January compared to last year, though not all lead to sickness.

UNICEF has reached a new agreement aimed at reducing the cost of the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, a move expected to make the life-saving shot more affordable for millions of children.

The new pricing arrangement, which will bring the cost down to about 3 dollars per dose, is expected to take effect within the next year. Backed by Gavi and implemented through UNICEF, the deal is projected to save more than 90 million dollars.

These savings will help fund the production of an additional 30 million vaccine doses and extend protection to an estimated 7 million more children over the next five years.

So far, more than 40 million malaria vaccine doses have been delivered through the Gavi Malaria Vaccination Programme. The vaccines are now part of routine immunisation schedules in 24 African countries, which together account for over 70 percent of the global malaria burden.

Despite progress, malaria continues to be one of the world’s most challenging health threats. In 2023 alone, there were about 263 million cases and 597,000 deaths globally. Most of these deaths—around 95 percent—occurred in Africa, especially among children under five who lack access to reliable prevention and treatment.

In many high-burden countries, malaria remains a leading cause of hospital visits, placing a heavy financial strain on families and health systems. The cost of treating a mild case in sub-Saharan Africa is estimated at 4 to 7 dollars per outpatient visit, while severe cases requiring hospital care can cost more than 70 dollars.

Efforts to cut vaccine prices are expected to ease some of these pressures and expand access to protection for communities most at risk.

A groundbreaking blood test capable of detecting more than 50 different types of cancer has shown promising results in a major North American study. The test, known as Galleri, identified a wide range of cancers — including many for which no screening currently exists — and detected more than half of them at an early, treatable stage.

The year-long trial followed 25,000 adults across the US and Canada. Nearly one in every 100 participants received a positive result, and cancer was later confirmed in 62% of those cases. Researchers say the test could revolutionize cancer detection by spotting the disease before symptoms appear.

Developed by the American firm Grail, the test works by identifying fragments of tumor DNA circulating in the blood. It correctly ruled out cancer in more than 99% of people who tested negative and accurately identified where the cancer originated in nine out of ten cases.

When combined with existing screenings for breast, bowel, and cervical cancer, Galleri increased total cancer detection seven-fold. Notably, three-quarters of cancers found were types that currently have no regular screening options, such as ovarian, pancreatic, liver, and bladder cancer.

Experts say the results are “very compelling,” with the potential to “fundamentally change” how cancer is diagnosed and treated. However, scientists emphasize that more research is needed to confirm whether early detection with this test will lead to fewer cancer deaths.

A large-scale NHS trial involving 140,000 participants in England is still underway, with results expected next year. If successful, the test could be offered to one million more people as part of a wider rollout.

Health workers at Al-Awda Hospital report an alarming rise in severe malnutrition cases, now affecting children as young as two months and as old as twelve years. Dr. Rana Abu Zaatir, who heads the hospital’s nutrition department, warned that limited access to food and medical supplies is pushing Gaza toward a deeper crisis.

Only four malnutrition treatment centers remain operational in the entire region. With northern Gaza cut off from aid deliveries for weeks, hospitals are struggling to provide therapeutic food and basic care for starving patients.

“There are many children and adults dying from malnutrition and its complications,” said Dr. Zaatir. “If border crossings remain closed and food prices keep rising, we will face a real disaster. People simply don’t have enough to eat.”

The World Food Program has noted slight improvements in humanitarian access but insists that entry to northern Gaza must be restored immediately. The agency also emphasized that a lasting ceasefire is essential to deliver life-saving food to those most in need.

Experts estimate that around half a million people in Gaza City are already living in famine conditions, underscoring the urgent need for global intervention.

Young girls in Gauteng face a bleak future as sexual assault and teenage pregnancy reach pandemic levels in the province. Meanwhile, many child rapists remain free due to a lack of reporting to the police and the failure to pursue criminal charges.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng demands that the Education, Social Development, Health, and Community Safety departments empower health and social workers to report child and statutory rape to the police to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

Over 23,691 cases of teenage pregnancies have been reported in Gauteng from January to December 2024. 521 babies were delivered by girls between the ages of 10 and 14 years in a facility, 23,170 babies were delivered by girls between the ages of 15 and 19 years, while 4,840 girls between the ages of 10 and 19 years underwent a Choice on Termination of Pregnancy. This information was revealed by the Gauteng MEC for Health, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, in a written reply to the DA’s question in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL).

The high number of pregnancies in this age group is deeply concerning, as this is statutory rape. However, the data provided by the MEC reveals a low number of cases reported to the SAPS: 474 in the 2022/23 financial year, dropping to 257 in 2023/24, and only 242 reported between April and December 2024.

See full reply here:

The failure by those required by the Children’s Act to report cases and handle child rape and statutory rape inevitably results in this kind of criminal conduct being normalised and concealed. In fact, perpetrators frequently manage to sidestep accountability for their actions by offering monetary bribes to the affected families. Additionally, the ongoing backlog of DNA cases poses a significant obstacle to bringing these issues to light.

Statutory rape is a serious violation, and men who commit such a crime inflict lasting harm on a vulnerable individual. The failure by law enforcement agencies to take action against men who commit this offense is deeply troubling, as it compromises the principles of consent and respect, leaving young girls vulnerable to predatory individuals who have lost all sense of morality.

The DA demands that the Social Development, Education, Health, and Community Safety Departments stop passing the buck and collaborate in empowering health workers, social workers, auxiliary, and caregivers to report child and statutory rape to the South African Police Service (SAPS) as per the Children’s Act of 2005. Furthermore, teenage girls must be educationally empowered to know that no one, not even a teacher or a parent, is allowed to force themselves upon them at any given time.

We have tabled questions to ascertain the measures in place to deal with this crisis, and the current statistics of teenage pregnancies, arrests, and convictions of the perpetrators. We will also write to the MEC for Health seeking answers on reported cases of STIs, HIV amongst the group of ages mentioned above.

Child rape is not only a legal issue; it is a social issue. We urge parents and society at large to be actively involved in protecting our children. The recent Khomani Primary School incident in Diepkloof, where learners were reportedly drugged at school and taken to another location where they were allegedly sexually assaulted, proves that some of these incidents of statutory rape are happening beyond the direct control of teachers or school authorities.

A DA-led Gauteng Provincial Government would ensure that health workers and Social Workers are trained and equipped to implement the provisions of the Child Protection Act in child and statutory rape cases. We would ensure that matters referred to the police are investigated and successfully prosecuted without delay. We would vet all teachers and staff and involve parents and community leaders to create safe environments for young girls.

The DA will continue to put pressure on all relevant Gauteng departments to ensure that the children are protected in terms of the Children’s Act.

The family of Mr. Esethu Hasane, a Senior Manager at the Department of Transport, wishes to express deep concern regarding his health and safety, following a nine-month-long period of workplace harassment which led to his hospitalization earlier this year over actions perpetrated by his immediate supervisor, Mr. Collen Msibi, and the Chief Director of Human Resources at the department, Ms. Philisiwe Gcina.

The family welcomes Mr. Hasane’s decision to formally report the matter to the Public Protector and the Public Service Commission as a measure to prevent the said people from any threats they may further pose.

This follows internal departmental grievance processes initiated by Mr. Hasane, which confirmed allegations that Mr. Msibi authored and circulated a fraudulent letter under the guise of an anonymous source calling for Mr. Hasane’s dismissal from the public service are substantiated.

The letter, which Mr. Msibi sent to himself, the Minister of Transport, the Director-General, and the labour union, was allegedly composed using a Department of Transport Microsoft account and sent to the said people from a Pretoria Sunnyside Internet Café.

The letter falsely accused Mr. Hasane and other colleagues of misconduct and recommended their immediate dismissal.

Following this, Mr. Msibi approached the Human Resources unit with a printed copy of the same letter, pretending its foreign to him, seeking to initiate disciplinary action against Mr. Hasane, a Director, and one of his colleagues, a Deputy Director.

The subsequent grievance process, which included forensic metadata analysis of the letter, confirmed that allegations that Mr. Msibi was the original author were substantiated by Mr. Hasane. The document was later edited by Mr. Zakhele Nkwanyana – Mr. Msibi’s homeboy and close friend before it was circulated.

Mr. Hasane raised the alarm after recognizing Mr. Msibi’s handwriting on the printed copy submitted to HR. He then formally filed a grievance against Mr. Msibi for manufacturing the anonymous letter.

In response, Ms. Gcina allegedly misused the grievance process to launch an investigation into Mr. Hasane without following due process, seemingly in an attempt to shield Mr. Msibi from accountability.

This is not surprising, given allegations that Ms. Gcina admitted – during internal engagements with department officials – that she, Mr. Msibi, and the former Chief of Staff conspired to remove Mr. Hasane and his colleague from their positions to make way for associates from the now-defunct Department of Public Enterprises.

The available evidence now substantiated with a Grievance Report points to a coordinated effort to mislead departmental leadership and manipulate disciplinary processes for a malicious purpose: to displace existing Department of Transport officials and create vacancies for their associates.

“The involvement of senior government officials who view Esethu as expendable in order to secure jobs for their friends is not only a direct threat his career, but also to his personal safety. These actions reflect a gross abuse of power by his immediate supervisor and a complete betrayal of the ethical responsibilities of the Chief Director of HR. The Public Service Act obliges public servants to report unethical conduct to the relevant authorities, and he has done the right thing by taking this matter to Chapter 9 institutions. We are concerned about the risk of retaliation, and it would be remiss of us to wait until harm is done before placing this matter on public record,” the Hasane family stated.

“Esethu holds undergraduate degrees in Public Policy, Public Administration, Media and Writing, and International Relations from the University of Cape Town, as well as a postgraduate qualification…
